Why are there so many bald patches on that cape. Is it because of how it was handled in Africa.

It could be from the African handling. Usually it's from the tannery. It takes such a long time to hydrate the salted skins, sometime the epidermis will sloth off in places. This skin is actually in decent shape.

these hairless African species lose a lot of their skin pigmentations in the salting and tanning process. Buffs don’t really have that hair density .. and have a lot of hairless areas but since they are dark on dark you won’t see them until the pigments are gone and then you will notice the areas .. keep watching you will see how it will be fixed.
