When I went through a long illness, I couldn’t get anyone to shear my goats around here, didn’t last 6 yrs but it was over two. It was very distressing to me & I was so grateful when an old sheep shearer helped me out! My girls were plenty loaded down, matted & dirty. And obstreperous! I was amazed at how steady this llama stood for a shearing! Very satisfying to see. May this creature know nothing but good care from now on.

Me too. I could see she was cautious at first. Poor creature. I used to work on a horse farm and we got in quite a few in terrible condition. I bought one who couldn’t be a school horse that had serious ringbone but worse, a blown knee and split hoof. He’d been a well known eventing horse who took a jump wrong. His owner kept him until he was 14 but the damage wasn’t properly remediated. It took almost a year of care for the foot to stabilize the crack and while we couldn’t entirely mend it, he would be ok for the rest of his life with proper shoeing. The knee was beyond repair but we could medicate and make him more comfortable. His right front foot occasionally drag so he couldn’t be ridden over pavement or grass or by anyone heavy so my daughter used to lie on his back in summer and read. Or ride him at a walk or fast walk for exercise in the sand ring. He was utterly bomb proof. I used to use him for summer camps to teach basic safety and grooming. He loved people. With me he had a silly sense of humor, stealing hats, tools, and tickling me while I groomed him. In time he also loved our farrier and would untie his apron while he worked. He lived to be 22. He was the most lovely boy.

At some point the Llama must have become tired of all that mess. Looks like Llama abuse to me. It's REALLY heavy. Animals vibe...they know when you're helping them. Plus I bet it feels really good...it's itchy under there.

Llamas are all over the place on behavior during shearing. It’s maybe one in twenty or thirty that will just stand calmly. If it’s an intact male you can just forget about cooperation

Sometimes cuts and nicks happen because there are irregularities under all the coat that the shearer can’t see or feel until the cut has happened. Shears are incredibly sharp - even the non electric types! The animal might also choose to move at just the wrong time, because it isn’t comfortable in the position it was placed for the shearer to work. I can’t think of a single shearer who would NOT be upset about accidentally curing and hurting an animal under their care. This is a really precise skill that takes a LOT of practice to do well, and make it look effortless. Kudos to folks willing to apprentice, study, learn, and practice this vital art for animal welfare.

When shearing that tail, the little flicker of "eek! I can move it again!" was felt through my whole being. What a magnificent creature, alas!! Looked quite dandy (and maybe quietly dancing) and sweet once it was all done! I've taken in foster fuzzies (and squawkers, quackers, shelled, and just about any other animal) and it's always a pleasure to see their true selves pop out from the weight of their pasts! 🥰

Shanta Williams(So) the reason the other ones had big ashes on them in that as if they explained at the end it's because the the match that were in the sheep we're so tight that it pulled the skin and made the razor cut into them it wasn't that he was doing it wrong it's because the maps were so tight against the skin that it pulled what he was shaving it that the shaver cut into it that's how the guy explained it at the end

What a transformation. I'm impressed with how still that llama was with not having been sheered for 6 years. Great job, Katie, for mastering the llama's huge fleece removal. I especially loved how you removed the big, super heavy blanket in multiple sheers and dropped it away from the animal. And going back to do a final finishing sheer made that a beautiful video and llama in the end.

He went from a plump Llama to a skinny one. He needs more groceries for that gorgeous giraffe colored body. The dirt accumulated in his fleece had to be murder on your blades. I love that you always have a smile and such a happy attitude. New to channel but now a dedicated viewer. Used to have sheep ( spinners flock) and a Angora goat.

@@snuassauns; they might not have had a choice. Livestock can just wander off, sheep are renowned for it. If the farmer/owner doesn’t find them in the next muster, the animal goes without a haircut. Usually, if they don’t reappear, it’s because they were killed by something and the missed haircut is the least of their problems. Occasionally the animal comes wandering back in; or get caught by another farmer; months/years later and a long overdue shave is given as soon as possible. Of course, there’s also the possibility that the previous owners didn’t know they need to shear their family pet and things just got out of hand. We don’t really know.

Wow. Knowing you work in Texas Nd living in Houston myself I couldn't imagine having to wear a heavy winter coat year round. It takes a very special person for these animals to be so calm while you shear them and to know you're there to help.
