Cape Lookout Island, North Carolina Family Camping 2021

The Island has a public bathroom with showers (even though we mostly showered by our tent) and offers water for cleaning but no drinking water. We brought our own water filtration system and other visitors brought drinking water. No electricity on the island. The beach area was bug free on a windy day but on day 3, we hardly had any wind and we got lots of bug bites. If your family wants a beach vacation and can handle rough camping, this is a great island. Nothing but the beach!

Planning a trip in September my only concern is the wind. I have a Gazelle T4 tent and im not sure if it will hold up to strong winds. Also driving from Ohio Cleveland area. Also,Are there any permit and do i need to make reservations for the ferry and how much it cost? Thank you

Wind will most likely be a problem for most large tents. If you notice @7:01 in the video, each of those red stakes provided guy out points for our large tent. We had about 5 -6 of those anchors facing the wind and a few more on the other sides of the tent as well. In total we probably had about 15 guy lines. Each stake was buried about a foot into the sand. As for permits, you'll need a ORV driving permit (to enter the park and drive on the beach) -which you can purchase at recreation.gov for around $20; reservations for the ferry can be booked in advance for around $90 per vehicle plus a per person fee around $16 per person -this is for round trip. As mentioned under description, there is no drinking water on the island. You have to bring your own. A canopy to cover against strong sunlight. Lots of sunscreen. A bug spray. Close the screen on the tent or you will keep waking up because of biting flies. No AC in the cabins but we did a tent camping on the beach and went into the water to cool off multiple times a day. I hope there's a breeze for you guys then the day at the beach is quite pleasant. Around the sunset, the dinner time is a great experience. Make sure your car is in a tip-top shape because towing out of the island is $800+. Regarding little ones, just hydrate them well and watch out for heat exhaustion and cool them off with water.
