Very nice episode, can't wait to fly over SA when I get my hands on the sim... Echoing some other requests I'm seeing re: an IFR tutorial - I think a lot of gamers like myself (I first flew MSFS version 3.0 but haven't tried it in a very long time, so very out of the loop on sims) are surprised to see how much of flight is not hands-on control but rather setting things on the NAV computer and letting the plane "fly itself". An overview of how that works in general would be super useful to a lot of people, I think. Cheers!

Hi Squirrel, I do have my hands on it and I am very much enjoying it. I got setup with my logitec attack3 (had to clean off the dust) and I have been flying around a bit. Which leads me to a question. Would it be possible to fill a bit of the gap that the tutorial left? Like how to fly IFR. What fuel mixture and prop control does and how to use it properly. Things like that.

@MechanicalFalcon4 жыл бұрын
Hey! Mixture controls the fuel pumped into the engine, no performance benefit besides saving fuel by leaning the mixture in flight. The prop lever controls the pitch of the prop. Essentially, prop full fine (forward) is used in slow flight (takeoff/landing in case of go-around), an prop full coarse (back) is used at higher speeds. It controls prop efficiency and provides high power overe a greater range of airspeed. To simplify, as you speed up, your prop won't create as much thrust, by twisting the prop blade, it maintains it's efficiency and maintains the same thrust until it is full coarse! (Hope that helps!)
@aapjeaaron4 жыл бұрын
@@MechanicalFalcon thanks, isn't it good to reduce mixture as you go higher up? Low air pressure means more volume of air needed to combust the same amount of fuel? I did notice that highish up your RPM increases when decreasing mixture from 100$
@MechanicalFalcon4 жыл бұрын
@@aapjeaaron Correct, it would kill the engine if you left it full rich. But yeah, it will not provide a performance boost if thats what you are after. If you slowly pull it back (in the sim) you may notice when the engine starts dying, it's a good way to know how far you can pull it back before it becomes an issue! in the PA44, as a rule of thumb we pull it to about 50%

Quality video as always Squirrel. Noticed the detail of the choice of reg, well done! Have you noticed that in FLC mode, the nose up/down functionality is inverted, basically nose down brings the target speed down, which brings the nose up... A bit annoying but not a big deal. Yes I am missing the full CHT/EGT monitoring for leaning in the G1000. And yes... ATC is full of bugs IRL, the fuel selector has a locking system that you need to pull to get to off...

The rule to never use the word "Takeoff" except when giving and reading back takeoff clearance was put in place after the Tenerife disaster, where there was fog over the airport and a lot of confusion about where two 747s were within the airport premises. It remains to this day the air disaster with the highest death toll.

Power idle is your friend when bleeding speed. I aim to be 95 at the initial fix, 90 at the intermediate fix, 85 at the final approach fix, 80 on short final, 75 at the threshold, power idle, 68 200' before the 1000' markers. This normally puts my on center-line, on the markers at an ideal speed for a gentle transition. Not sure if this will work in flight simulator, but I'll try it.

Wow, used to fly from FACT and scenery and airfield are SO realistic. Would be unusual to fly the ILS in a GA aircraft except for training. Most flights (commercial too) would use a visual approach which would be to head for the southern end of the Tygerberg hills and then left turn to line up for 19. GA routes visual for the distribution centre north of the field and then left turn and land...

I have no idea if this works, as it is a tiny grass airport. But I suggest flying from Vinnu (ENSU) at Sunndalen in Norway. I would like to see how they have done the landscape in what is a quite impressive valley. Maybe fly down to Bergen or to Trondheim, or perhaps another small airport in the west or the north of Norway. I know Vinnu is known for difficult wind conditions as the valley is quite narrow and the mountains sometimes catch north/south winds and give weird winds.
