Glad everyone was ok in the crash. Fixing people is not as easy as repairing planes. Replacing the entire main spar on the wing that has a local spar bend in one bay is a big overkill. The spar can be beefed up locally in the area of the bend and be better than knew. Spars (and stringers) can be spiced and diced all day long and pass Military or FAA certifications if you can show the paper work on how it's as good or better. Simple calculations and in most cases, very simple substitutions that anyone can understand. Only concern is creating hard point stress risers and maybe a little weight gain. Hard points can be spread 30 to 1 outside of the area to increase fatigue strength of the material close to the local beefed up area. If u r interested, I can show u how to do it. No charge. I'm a retired aerospace structural engineer that would like to help people in need with aircraft structural repairs or modifications. I repaired Gulfstream and C-130 spars, stringers and ribs hundreds of times.

You are going to push the longerons back into place? Correct repair would be to remove the fabric, remove the damaged longerons and replace with new tubing. Bending the damaged airframe back into place is asking for failure down the road... especially where you have stress from the landing gear pushing up onto the airframe.

Hope you’re planning to do a serious check for cracks in all the welds and joints in the framework. But may be an incidental little crack now through vibrations could be a catastrophic failure that could cause the wings to collapse later. Not trying to sound mean just concerned don’t want to see you crash in the plane a second time. Fly safe.

Jonas has, and Mike would tell him the same thing especially seeing as how Mike recently crashed his airplane Dracos, but instead of rebuilding it he’s going to build a new one after he gets done building his own version of a cub cadet, scrappy. He’s not going to rebuild Dracos because he’s afraid of a bunch of small cracks that he won’t be able to find and it won’t be safe. Of course he crashed it a whole lot harder than Jonas did.

This is meant to be constructive advice...Have you taken the time to step back and really analyze your actions and possibly inactions concerning safety and procedures? I understand this latest airplane accident was sort of a freak accident that can be explained away, but what led up to the accident. Perhaps inattention to detail, insufficient training/planning, over confidence, distractions, fatigue, etc. Watching you fly the Kitfox was fun. You performed some dangerous maneuvers that are routine amongst the bush pilot crowd, but I figured you had the proper training and took the appropriate safety planning and procedures. But more recently, watching the way you drove that boat! The boat antics made me question your judgement and how much you factor in safety (not to mention Sylvia’s). Flying paramoters with lawn mower engines... it can be accomplished safely, but not sure if that’s the road you will head down. If you were to have a major accident in the future, people will look at your past actions and accidents and say it was bound to happen. You are a very talented guy. The skiing, diving, flying, skills in the shop, designing things from scratch, etc. I get it...young guys think they are bulletproof. I understand and encourage some of this stuff, I flew fighter jets in my younger days and have done several things that could have gotten me killed. All i am saying is maybe you should step back, re-analyze a few things, then perhaps approach your fun from a slightly different and safer angle. If I was your age, I would be out doing similar activities. But as you get older you realize that maybe certain stunts are not worth it. I remember when I held my first born child for the first time, and I realized I was no longer just living for me, I had to be around to raise and provide for that child for the next 20 years. My days of free climbing and hanging it out were over! You’ve heard the joke about the old bull and the young bull? Well, I’m just an old fat bull now trying to pass on just a little nugget of advice. BTW - Sylvia seems like an awesome woman, congrats! Women like her don’t come along every day. I know you will love and treat her right. Keep crankin’ out the content, I’ll keep watching. This comment was sent with the best of intentions. I just think you are so much “prettier” without a broken neck😎

I haven't been following for a while and this popped up so I decided to watch it. I also appreciate the content of it and as an older guy myself have questioned some of your maneuvers shall we say but again we have all done some things and hopefully gain from experience. I did not know that you had crashed and I am so glad that neither one of you are evidently hurt or if you were sore you seem to have recovered. Looks like it could have been a whole bunch of worse for sure. I have also done some major repairs on experimental airplanes and as you are doing it is very important to follow the tried and true or at least wise get the repair approved by someone who knows before you fly the aircraft again. Full disclosure, I did resubscribe as I would like to follow this process and I concur with the other guys nugget of wisdom he is trying to give you all with the best of intentions. You and Sylvia make an excellent couple and I hope you continue to be that for many many many years to come. Keep up your enthusiasm for Aviation, add a little dose of humility here and there even though it tastes like crap most of the time and you will live to be an old and wise aviator and husband and maybe Dad if that's what you're planning in the future.

One trick I have learned / used that may have made getting that part off the gear leg a little easier is heating outside metal with propane torch and then taking a can of dust off upside down (sprays wicked cold freezing) and quickly spraying the inside part with that. Getting it as cold as possible shrinking the inside part and outside tube as hot as possible expanding it, taking advantage of Expansion and Contraction. I learned that trick from a member at my local MakerSpace when someone got the collet / endmill stuck in the CNC spindle from not snapping the collet in properly and I thought it was almost impossible to remove without damaging the spindle (I tried what you did, but I had to be more delicate and couldn't get it out) but with that dust off trick it was able to be removed pretty easily after that. (Happened again with another member and I knew how to do the trick that time and it worked, able to get it out in no time + it looked like I knew what I was doing lol) Gotta act real fast though and sometimes re cool / re heat, Even though you already figured it out, maybe in future that trick will be useful.

Good that you checked for run out on prop shaft how about crank shaft twist? Very common for rotax engines on prop strikes with pressed together cranks. Not trying to be a downer just looking out.

Dear Jonas, after watching your videos I like to see that there are people who have aviation passion in their blood, I am one of the lucky ones to have a Capella SD-TD, even though this model is not manufactured I see that after Several years you have built yours, after watching this video I see that you have fuel tanks on the wings, in my model the tank goes inside the cabin behind the instrument panel and I wanted to remove it from there to place it in the wings, if you would be so kind to help me in some way such as giving me the measurements of the tank and the way the tank is anchored in the wing, I think there is no rib in the place of the tank and the upper cover of the tank is removable fixed with camlok? I have watch your KitFox videos with pleasure. You brought home the joy of flying. I looked forward to the next episode. I stopped watching for a few months because it was evident you were just following the trends of the youtube vloggers - jet boats, paraglider, powered paraglider… It all became a bit sad for me and not interesting. I skydived for years and was a member of a freefall parachute display team; flown fighter jets as a civilian and jumped out of everything from microlights to transport jets; the biggest helicopters in the world to static line from a few hundred feet… all done with progressive advancement, training and awareness and lots of fun. I have know many peers that are now dead; and your flying and attitude concerns me. You went from safe and fun, to dangerous and seemingly ego driven. You are an accident waiting to happen, only you do not see that yet. You are a very talented individual, incredibly capable. You have money, make money and have time, what a privilege. So walk your own path and make great videos in your own style, which is why I enjoyed the KitFox series: Yet, you seem now to follow the crowd and push too hard, playing catch up to a crowd you have no need to play catch up with - And what is it about skimming over water!? I returned to your youtube channel yesterday, and sadly I was not surprised to see your plane broken. As you say, it was not your fault. But, I was expecting it, as probably were most who regularly watch your channel. Be talented (because your are), be serious (aviation requires it), have fun and show off your amazing creative skills; grow some balls and get some additional advance training and stop pushing so hard, you will hurt yourself; or worse, you will hurt your passenger, your fiancé. This will probably frustrate you, because you are so capable and you are always learning and developing, which is the best thing. Aviation is unforgiving. I know many wing suit jumpers, base jumpers, ordinary skydivers that are dead and many planes that have crashed and lives shattered. They were all cool and groovy - Rock Stars - but they are dead none the less. Don't be that guy. And importantly, don't be that guy that kills his passenger or kills the person on the ground.

If you build a small inclosure around the fuselage & one wing section and wrap it in plastic you can pump in heat with a duct from outside and your productivity is worth the work. You’ll be surprised how few 2x4’s it takes. Done it several times to work in cold unheated hangers. A box in a box. Hi Silvia! She will be happier too and will be willing to help you more. Cheers.
