A lot of the resources that used to be put into those kinds of licenced games have since been diverted into mobile. Back in the day, a lot of us thought of most licenced games as pretty disposable but compared to the thousands of mobile offerings (many of which are dead and cannot be played at all anymore), licenced games of old auteur masterpieces!

Great episode. I also think this drift applies to Star Wars games unfortunately

I have minimal interest in superhero games but I really enjoyed your insights here. Very interesting to follow the trajectory of the direction and quantity of these games post-MCU and in the live service era. Keep it up, Jake!

Great video. I loved Justice League Heroes and Ultimate Spider-Man back in the day. There aren’t even any superhero games I can get excited for these days.

Dang dude… I literally own all those games you named at the beginning. Have them for the classic Xbox and grew up playing them. There definitely are jank to imperfects that game was so wild to pull out on the sleep overs.

I think the closest thing that exists to the kinds of games you describe are licenced anime games of today and even then, they don't really offer alternate takes on the same characters, they have to follow the source material pretty closely.

I appreciate how fair this was as well as the shout outs to Guardians and Midnight Suns in particular, love those games.

I think it's a bummer that for a lot of big properties we're having a similar issue. You either get these massive games that huge studios are putting everything into or mobile games that are trying desperately for monetization. We're really losing the AA games that aren't huge but DO build that cult following you're talking about, like a Pokemon conquest or mystery dungeon, for the big players and its a real pity

Marvel and DC are just overrated when we got Invincible and Indie Comics carrying the Comic Industry but overall CBG just haven't been that good recently. Plus they make them realistic which they are Comic Characters they don't need to be realistic just give me a fun superhero game that are Single Player.

It's hurting a lot of games, honestly, but yeah, the superhero stuff seems particularly egregious

I think its fair to blame capitalism for the state of the games industry. I don't know what other solution could possibly exist though.

Yup, hyper capitalism is killing almost everything, including democracy in the US. You should have stood by the original title I think
