Thanks Lukas. The wind noise is a problem as the camera clips the audio due to it so when I speak you wont be able to hear a thing. Even the AI voice recognition/isolation on my editing software can't pick it up.

I would need more crew to make enough weight to capsize to windward. It is probably a bit more serious as the boat with the sail trailing, instead of burying in the water as in a leeward capsize, it might "sail way" on its side quite fast in strong wind...maybe!

It's (land)miles per hour as indicated on the GUI, The app has only two options, KmH or MPH. MPH is the easier calculation, in the range between 5 and 12 MPH you can either take 10% off or take 1 kt off and you wont be wrong by more than 0.5KTs.

That jump into the water gap between boom and sail looks a little dicey. But I imagine if you fell off the other way, that huge hull on its side could blow away from you faster than you could swim to catch it. And there is not much on the bottom to grab onto, so keeping a hold of the sheet is a good plan. Also, do you think you can capsize from a crash gybe? Artificially swamping the boat would be interesting to see as well. I imagine you could ship a lot of water if you were sailing in a tidal race or something.
@TheBoatRambler
@TheBoatRambler 3 ай бұрын
If capsizing to leeward like in the video the boat won't go anywhere since the sail sinks and prevents that. If capsizing to windward, unlikely but possible, I believe you are right, it could "sail" on its side very fast indeed. I can't see how I would swamp the boat other than sailing by the sea shore in big waves! It would take 600litres of water before it gets fully flooded!
@MinSredMash
@MinSredMash 3 ай бұрын
@@TheBoatRambler If I was in Portugal with a dinghy that could stand up to so much wind, I would definitely be tempted to sail along the beach. And inevitably take a breaking wave over the side at some point or another.

Indeed! Even in that wind I still had to oversheet stop hiking to make it happen! the next day I went out again in 14-27kts with a full sail! It was tough but still didn't capsize. Leads me to believe that this boat should have an extra 1,5sqm of sail similar to the GIS.
@Moleasses102
@Moleasses102 3 ай бұрын
@@TheBoatRambler It really looks like the boat stalls out and you had to not only stop hiking but put weight on the leeward tank to get it to go over. Seems like it would take a huge gust and being below a beam reach to capsize without it being deliberate. I think your idea of additional sail area would be great for light wind, but in stronger wind, to use the extra power, like you said you would need more weight=exponentially more stress on mast and daggerboard. Bigger sail and another reef point?

@TheBoatRambler

Mid boom sheeting might put a bend on the boom in stronger gusts which is exactly when you don't want it to happen as it creates more depth on the sail.
@joschmoyo4532

The plus with big buoyancy tanks is buoyancy but if it turns turtle they are a beast to get back around. Especially if your dagger board lacks length and leverage. If you had not quickly grabbed that dagger board your boat was bound to turn turtle just from the huge windage on that flat bottom and the weight of the wet sail. Not impressed 😕. With two or three crew panicking and falling on that sail ? Whole different scenario. Most new Dinghy designs now are buoyant double bottoms for a good reason. Stiffer, lighter, much better hiking comfortably. More room. Self bailing.
@70122riley
@70122riley 3 ай бұрын
Do you have a specific design that you could reference for the bouyant double bottom? Thanks
@TheBoatRambler
@TheBoatRambler 3 ай бұрын
They said the same thing when I built the side tanks on my GIS “you’ll never get it up right if it turtles”. Complete nonsense, it was no problem whatsoever and the tanks were a game changer, they transformed the GIS into a safer boat than most dinghies out there. I will turtle the Goose soon and then we will see. And what would be different if 3 ppl in panic fall on top of any other boat’s sail? Bottom line is there are no dinghies which have even half of the pros the OZ Goose has and still stay dry after capsize. I don’t care if a designer could eventually, maybe, some day, in the future, design a boat to match the OZ Goose… the truth is that right now such boat doesn’t exist or no one has shown me such boat. In one sentence tell just one off the shelve plan for a diy boat to beat the Goose… The realm of the imaginary is infinite, real life is a different story.
@joschmoyo4532
@joschmoyo4532 3 ай бұрын
@@TheBoatRambler If the goose is the best choice you obviously have not heard of the GP14 MK2 with the double bottom and bow tank. That's just one example and yes you can get the plans and build it yourself. Another example though bigger is the I550. Any Dinghy has the potential to turn turtle in rough conditions but generally speaking if it capsizes with the centre board near level with the water it's a lot easier to bring back up. The one really good thing about the goose is its stability climbing back in. No argument there. That said, yes there should be better designs in greater variety for home building. There seems to be an unwritten embargo agreed upon by designers not to bridge that gap to protect their existing intellectual property. They will never admit that though for obvious reasons. I'm just going to design my own. Probably based loosely on the Phantom single hander and RS 200.
@TheBoatRambler
@TheBoatRambler 3 ай бұрын
Hey Josch, thanks for your feedback but you chose boats without taking in consideration the main requirements. They both fail in almost all categories and would be eliminated right away on the main one… -Needs to be cartopable; at over 130kg for the GP14 and 300kg for the I550 none of them is remotely cartopable! Compare that to the Oz Goose 40kg. -No bailing after capsize; The GP 14 MK2 still has of water inside after a capsize, the Goose has ZERO water! -Easy to build; no comparison! And I could go on and on… there is no point comparing apples to oranges. So I stand correct, no one has yet showed me a dinghy to beat the Oz Goose against my requirements list. If you can come up with a dinghy to beat the Goose on all the requirements I will be interested in having a look at it. kzbin.info/www/bejne/Y4TFhXeglMqjotk

@joschmoyo4532 3 ай бұрын
@@TheBoatRambler As I've said before, your requirements have very little latitude. That's okay. It's your choice. But all choices involve compromise. The Phantom single hander is very light and car toppable. But it's not double bottomed in ply. It could be modified to double bottom though. The GP 14 is probably to heavy to car top. The rs 200 to long for your car top. As I've said before I will be designing my own and encourage you to consider doing like wise. You just have to borrow the best features of a number of designs. To me the goose is a bit of a dog. Just my opinion. I would use very thin aeroply for the bottom with a foam core covered in marine ply for the double bottom. Dagger board is good. All I'm trying to get across is that there is much room for improvement. It's not about needing to win an argument for me. The goose appeals because its very simple but it lacks elegance. Just my opinion. The goat could be evolved to double bottom. Shorten the length. Wider and lower freeboard. Blue foam core.
