I hate the fact that street value is used so often here, it gives a weird representation of what the drugs are selling for in bulk. 91 million pills with a street value of $2 billion is not really helpful when the Assad regime's lackeys were selling them in bulk for around $15k per 200,000 pills with a cost of $500. This suggests the supplier would have got around $6.8 million. Due to it being massive bulk I would suggest that the profit figure for the supplier to be quite a bit lower than this and the Assad's regime got even less of a profit. Street value makes sense when we are talking about the damage to the communities which are suffering from these drugs, but not when we are talking about the Assad Regime and the profits that they receive from the drugs trade. Hopefully with this new regime change, the trade of these amphetamines slowly disappears but it will probably just be taken up by someone else in the Middle East, perhaps by Hezzbola

Captagon® was manufactured in Germany by Chemiewerk Homburg AG, Frankfurt (Main) and marketed as a drug from 1961. Structurally, fenetylline consists of theophylline (caffeine analogs) and amphetamine, which is why it is also trivially referred to as a “disguised” amphetamine derivative. Around 2003, I occasionally replaced Ritalin with Captagon. Sometimes it felt exactly like Coke. But it was definitely legal at the time - although not every doctor in Germany prescribed it to every patient. But even without a diagnosis (e.g. ADHD or narcolepsy), it was relatively easy to get a prescription from your GP with a few nice words.
