Barnes and Noble in NYC was established in 1886. But it was under a different name. The name was changed to Barnes and Noble sometime after 1917 (MCU Bucky's birth year). He knows! :D

​@@Frankie_1908 I think calling it a headcanon is the right way to go, there isn't anything concrete enough to put it into theory territory but there's more than enough to make a solid headcanon. There's always the chance that something more concrete will appear in a future project to change that

He did have like a thousand sisters so I bet he has descendants from their side. And the name would carry on even though they were women, because Bucky's family subscribes to the tradition of passing on the mother's surname: his middle name Buchanan is his mother's maiden name. So his nieces and nephews would all have the Barnes middle name.

I read a theory/research someone did into the costuming between Bucky and Steve, basically pointing out that Bucky comes from money. So importing a book would definitely make sense.

​@@wantrcy it's more likely that happened than Bucky going to Great Britain. In the MCU canon, both Bucky and Steve were very poor and the likelihood of any of them going out of country (especially without the other which makes thing even harder) is very unlikely.

I’m about to dig up my inner Winter Soldier nerd. In the comics Bucky went to England for special training before meeting Captain America, it’s not hard to believe that Mcu Bucky did something similar, he does go into the war as a Sargent and as far as I’m aware you’d need some kind of training to pull that off, in 1937 when the Hobbit came out Mcu Bucky would’ve been around 20 and could’ve been undergoing whatever training was needed for his rank in England when the book came out and just so happened to read it. This is the only way I can think of him saying this without screwing up the year.

Also, the version he read is not the version we read today. Bucky read the first version which most notebly had no One Ring, (there was a magic ring that made you invisible but it wasnt THE one ring)

@@ismingo4264 No, it's just common knowledge... America wasn't (officially) part of WWII in '37, so why would Bucky know Carter in '37? They probably met during WWII during military operations, as seen in the first Captain America movie, and America didn't (officially) become part of WWII until '41.

I like to think Bucky was already in the military was just stationed in the UK. The US didn’t enter the war until 1941 but we were neutrally supporting the UK with supplies and had some non active military bases there. Still makes him a huge nerd since he read one of the few copies, but clears up the difficulty of knowing about it and getting his hands on it in America

Good thought, HOWEVER the US didn't enter WW2 until 1941,therefore, he wouldn't have been drafted yet and sent off to Britian to be able to read the book naturally in 1937

Or maybe because he was in the war in Germany, he had a British friend give him a copy. Which is way more plausible then shipping a children's book in the 30s and 40s overseas.
