Chris Evans, who plays Captain America, actually played The Human Torch aka Johnny Storm, in the The Fantastic Four film in 2005 and its 2007 sequel. These two films have no connection to the MCU and were standalone Marvel films before the MCU started in 2008. So it's actually kind of an inside joke that The Human Torch and Captain America are the "same guy", even though they aren't connected canonically in the films because there is no Fantastic Four MCU film yet.

"Why does he want to join so badly" Because that was the attitude of the day. The idea of staying safe at home, while others went off and fought and died was seen as dishonorable or shameful. There are multiple cases (MULTIPLE) of young men attempting to enlist after Pearl Harbor (or later in the war), being told that they were 4F (unfit for military service) then going home and killing themselves because they were so ashamed that they couldn't fight for there country while everyone else was.

Definitely one of my favorites in the MCU. Evans (and the writers) did a great job with the character. It would be really easy to get a character like that wrong, and make him look silly...or at the very least, hard to take seriously. But they put together a solid foundation here and Evans' portrayal of Cap in this and subsequent films is one of the highlights of the MCU as a whole.

They made Captain America easier to take seriously by starting him off as a "performing monkey" in that costume to raise War Bond sales clearly looking and acting uncomfortable. "why does he want to join so badly?" Back in those days some people actually lied about their ages and disabilitoes in order to *go to* not to *avoid going to* war. That seems so alien these days, I know. My grandfather did it. He got run over by a drunk driver in his front yard as a kid and was never able to raise one of his arms above his head thereafter. But he lied and got stationed on a navy ship with big guns. He was supposed to shove the spent shells off the deck, but he couldn't do it because of his bum arm. They discharged him honorably. But he was upset about it the rest of his life.

For "skinny" Steve, they used a body double with a slimmed down Chris Evans "CG'd head" on it. Then him all CG'd down.... a number of different tactics. He was always muscular (beefed up before production on the movie) and with the mulitple ways to slim him down and changing each type from shot to shot, it worked without too much of the CG creepy factor to it. Cap is the leader of The Avengers. Not because he's the most powerful (he isn't), but because A) he's very good with tactics and strategy, and B) he's the moral compass. He's the kind of person that others like to follow.

FYI: There is a two season Marvel tv-series for Agent Carter, called "Agent Carter", Just so you know. The first season is 8 episodes and the second season is 10 episodes. It deals with her adventures after WW2 and the precursor organization of S.H.I.E.L.D. It also introduces a character that becomes important to Tony Stark.

The best thing about Captain America is that he IS as patriotic as his name implies but he understands what too many self proclaimed patriots miss; being patriotic doesn't mean assuming you're the best, it should mean proving it by making your country better instead of mocking others. In that way Cap represents what America could/should be rather than just being the poster boy for what it is. Him rejecting the showbiz stuff to actually help makes that point clear. So too does the fact that Dr Erskine is German.

6:02 Actually, one crazy detail about Steve's new strength. He wasn't used to it entirely as he was figuring out his new strength and speed. When he leapt over the fence, he was thinking he needed to grab the top of the fence to climb over. That's why his arms are outstretched forward. But, he ends up jumping over the entire fence completely and his arms flailing was him not knowing where they should go as he made the jump.
