Thank you for the Omnibus Overview Omar . I was just a kid in Catholic School during the time these issues came out . I was trying to draw the covers to Captain America . I remember getting the Nightshade issue with Alan Weiss art for the first time. That issue still has good memories for me . I got all the Captain America issues through the 70s . Great Issues & Great Times !

I see a half dozen comments about the size of the font on the dust jacket, but nobody has commented on the binding being tight. The didn't put enough slack in the bookend pages and the eye isn't very tall compared to the Vol 1 or 2.

Agreed. The Wolverine Vol 2 omnibus binding is garbage. Marvel has definitely dropped off in quality. Disappointing.

Hopefully people don't sleep on this book. Design comments aside. This is the entirety of the legendary Englehart run, with so many stories that impact Cap to this day. This can be read totally on its own, without the first two volumes.

I’ve read most of the first two omnis and I’m surprised at just how enjoyable these stories actually are. And the art is truly fantastic. It has that real 60s mod style of art that fits perfectly with the secrete agent type stories that are being told. These old Captain America comics are truly a real joy to read.

I wish that the new spine would be for one of the covers, then the other cover would be in the style of the legacy stuff. I actually do not care about the covers, the spines are what I see daily and I want a matching collection!!!!

Brilliant overview Omar. The silver and bronze age art work/comics are my favorite. The 80's and early 90's comics/art work comes in second. I don't really like comics that have come out after the mid 90's. I have Vol's 1 & 2 and Cap by Jack Kirby but i've been waiting for Vol 3 before i actually read Kirby's run just to maintain the continuity.

That spine is so sexy I only wish it was a smaller font so I would need a magnifying glass to see what title it was. WAIT!! They were sunburned in the originals. This is my Captain America, my first issue was 151 and I am so happy this is finally available in one volume. Wish they wouldn't have screwed up the spine and made the lettering bigger.

Naff spine again. The font is so tiny, hard to read, leaves loads of black space and looks like someone is embarrassed to celebrate the characters name. The older spine hard it right. Someone needs a bollocking for this decision.

I'm getting this one. I missed out on the Heroes or Hoax epic and now it's cheaper for me to get this omnibus than the epics. Anyways to me this is the Captain America by Englehart, which in my opinion is one of the best Cap runs all time. I know I'll get slack for this but I prefer these stories over Kirby's run that follows this up.

Just arrived! Although I was around for the original run, I did lose track of the series after #200 and didn't pick it up again until the close of the Swine episode and the mind-blowing "Night Flyer". I'm surprised to find I still have those original issues lying around! Great review. I ordered based on your tugging at my Kirby heartstrings.

Hey Omar, thanks for this overview of a book that I have long awaited. I even bought the corresponding Epic Collection because I gave up on ever seeing it in print. I have it on pre-order so I am awaiting its arrival and I hope it's the DM version. I own the previous 2 omnis & the following Jack Kirby book so this will slot in nicely. That spine however.... hmmm. Others have said it but what's Marvel thinking. I now fear for that X-Men Volume 1 coming next year. Why change it? Why not offer an alternative spine say with the DM or Standard edition? If they can offer those then an alternative spine shouldn't be a big thing to ask for should it? The 50's Cap story is actually my favourite. Cap & Sharon were coloured more pink for the sunburn effect in issue #155 and it was Sharon that noticed it when the other Cap turned up. The colouring looks roughly the same as the original issues that I own. I was buying this run back then but lost track after around #160. I have bits and pieces after so this will be new. In the original Cap comics, they had the Real Cap colored like the Fake Cap because in the story Falcon doesn't know who to slug when they were confronting one another on the beach. I'm all over these Cap omnis.

Great to finally see this book exist, and these new undercover fronts and backs for GA and SA books are lovely! As silly as it is though, I'm probably done buying GA and SA omnis (including Cap 3, and I have 1,2 and Kirby) as all the new books (even those several volumes deep into the run) now require a custom dustjacket (either designed by me or paying someone to do it) and then paying to have it printed... just to standardize the new book with the ones that have existed for decades. I realize it's stupid to think this way because we're getting a book that didn't exist, but in the long run these books are going to spend more time on the shelf than I will reading them. Correcting an odd design decision that I have to look at every day just adds more work to my life and costs more money, which ultimately detracts from a hobby that gives me joy. So goodbye, Capt. America Vol 3, and goodbye future GA and SA omnis.

I think Marvel created the new silver/bronze age spine because of the TASM vol.6 omni. If we look at the gap in between the volume 5 and the Stern omni we can have one huge omni or two omnis with 650/700 pages and I think that we will have two volumes and the old font was too big for a 650 pages omni, so they had to create a new smaller font design and they adapted it to all the titles. (Still prefer the old font and the idea of one huge volume 6)

OK, a few things to comment on I guess. Was planning on getting the Cap Omnibus Vol. 1 because, well, Kirby. And, the Bronze Age Kirby Cap Omnibus. But, since this new one comes just before the Kirby Bronze Age Cap Omni, would love to get it too. But, I'll now hold out on getting Volumes 1 & 2 to see of they are reprinted, new editioned, with the same spine design and such as Vol. 3 here. Hope that made some sort of sense. And, because I'm only now getting into purchasing a few Marvel Omnibuses, the new spine design and such doesn't really bother me.

Omar, I don't have the original issues, but I looked at some online scans and it does appear that (real) Cap + Sharon are sunburned/bright pink in the originals. The tone looks different on bright-white paper, but it doesn't look like something they did especially for the reprint.

I will stop pre-ordering Marvel classic Omnibus until they change back the design. I cannot cancel my Captain America 3 pre-order unfortunately, it's so annoying. Backlash on this shelves-ruining new trade dress is universal. Marvel did 180 U-turns for way, way less criticism. The decision here must've come from the very top management to be so stubborn in not publicly acknowledging there is a BIG problem with fans now.

Omar, I love your first look videos. In some cases they have persuaded me to buy a book I otherwise would not have. But I must say, sadly, some of these videos have left me sad because I was really looking forward to some but I just can’t go for the new spine designs. I own FF v. 1, Cap v. 1, Daredevil, ASM... and I was really looking forward to these reprints to fill out my collection. I bought the Defenders book and as much as I love the content, I just hate the way it looks on my shelf. Its font is smaller than paperbacks I own. I can’t even read it. But the thing that really sealed the deal was the back of t to he jacket. The issues go all the way to the bottom and it just looks like a bad collage a child did, and ran out of space. It looks sloppy. This sucks because I really wanted these but for me, it’s a hard pass on all new silver age omnis. I’ll read the stories in some other format but there’s still a heap of great omnis from Marvel I’m getting this year. I just gave to pass on these. If they reprint them later and go back to the old design, I’m all over them. You hear that Marvel?!

I have no idea how I did not consciously think of this when I initially watched this video, but what the hell happened with the spine? When I got my copy last week I had put it up on my shelf and it just looks so out of place compared to GA1, 1 and 2, and JK's return. Like what the hell were they thinking by changing the size of the spine in the middle of the run? I hate how it looks on my shelf. If it wasn't bookended by two larger spines I wouldn't care so much, but damn it's annoying. I really hope Amazing Spider-Man 5 and Fantastic Four 4 are not like this.

Greetings, Omar! I just got the X-Men Inferno Omnibus and have now stretched the spine of the book a couple of times. There is a problem I do not know how to solve: The eye of the omnibus is not opening/lifting. What should I do? Will it effect the book in a bad way when I'm reading it? Does your set of encyclopedias have different splines (of course, I'm assuming someone of your keen intellect keeps a set of encyclopedias for your daily review). Beauty and art go hand in hand. The spine looks plain ugly. And doing it in a continuing series is a slap in the face of collectors. Will stop buying them if they continue to bring em out like this. Sal was a bit bland, but he was quick and reliable and that got him a lot of work. Steve Engelhardt liked working with him because he knew Sal could handle anything he could throw at him.
