Pound for pound, Steranko's three issues on Cap is my favorite run in the history of superhero comics. With 113 being my favorite single issue. It's really shocking reading along, up to and including 109 thinking Kirby's art is the bees knees, then seeing that art become instantly outdated in 112, Kirby's gap-filler in the middle of Steranko's run. That's not to disparage the King, but Steranko's style is just from another time and place that still hasn't been replicated to this day, IMO.

This omnibus brings back great memories of when I bought these issues as they came out. Looking forward to getting this omnibus. Maybe future printings of silver age omnibus could include the house ads.

I had the first printing of this and when my son was two he tore up the cover. I didn’t care of course because I kept it at a level where he could reach it, but my OCD can now be put to rest with this new version :). And it’ll match the 2nd printing of volume 2 coming later this year…two OCD birds killed with one stone!

I'm really looking forward to rereading the Sleeper storyline. Read these comics when I was young in the Essentials format and that story in particular really stood out to me.

Gil Kane's nickname is a play on sugarcane (He's credited as Gil 'Sugar' Kane in the first comic he drew for Marvel, Astonish #88). As for the 'lips' part...Maybe he was a sweet talker?

“Give me some sugar” is a phrase I’ve heard people say when they want someone to give them a kiss, so in addition to sugar kane, maybe he was a good kisser too thus the nickname, lol.

Fantastic review Omar - thanks for your efforts. I'm a huge Silver/Bronze Age Cap fan. The Kirby issues exhibit the magnificent genius of his art. But Sterenko's issues transcend the pop art the King created into a more hypnotic form. Red Skull. MODOK. Baron Zemo. A.I.M., Hydra - each has a legacy that began with these issues. To think Vol 2 is right around the corner.

Gil "Sugar Lips" Kane might be a reference to sugar cane, but yeah, it's kinda homoerotic. Anyway, I love a lot of these comics. They have nostalgic value for me because, even though I was born in 1988, I watched some episodes of the '60s cartoon show on VHS tapes as a kid. I thought I'd love the entire Omni, but some of the issues are a bit so-so. There are some that are definitely excellent, though, and cement Cap as my favorite superhero. Also, I did read that a lot of the stories are WWII flashbacks because they didn't want any continuity confusion between Cap's solo title and the Avengers book. They didn't seem to care much about any contradictions with Iron Man or Thor, though.

I am a bit surprised it doesn't have the Strangle Tales story that "Cap" appears in. Not that is really relevant or important. But thought, if the epics include it, so does the omni.

I get more and more pissed of with Marvel. It's not enough that they release these volumes at a snail's pace, but to add additional material to the reprints is just another slap in the face.

How much American propaganda has this?? is just a superhero with a flag for a custom or is this full USA N1 type of thing?

While there is some typical Cold War propaganda, I wouldn’t say it’s specific to America. It’s usually more “freedom vs oppression”. But if you’re the type of person who can turn a simple eclipse into a bunch of conspiracies, then you may read these stories and find a bunch of hidden American propaganda in them. 🤷‍♂️
