These little anecdotes are a wonderful glimpse into Don's character.He shows all the signs of artistic genius-the difficult, irascible personality traits and manic energy producing works of pure uncompromising beauty and inventive power. Don is one in a million.

I like how Ry's version of events fits seemlessly with the other band member's. No exaggeration involved. Don was nuts.

I knew don then during the time he was making Safe as Milk and he didn't like drugs . I was about 12 years old and spent alot of time with his family , his mom and his granny . I remember that Don gave me a stack of these bumper stickers that came with the record that had a baby's face on them and said Safe as milk . I stuck them all over the school buss and all over the school. I remember him John French playing me songs from Safe as Milk that didn't have vocals yet .

When watching this, I feel that these folks were war heroes in their own respect - with all due respect for the D-day folks a.o., I don't mean to tread on toes, OK? But still, Ry Cooder makes me think of pure heroism - him, and anybody else daring to take part of the Beefheart (and sometimes Zappa) weirdness. Not that he's here, but where is Denny Whalley these days? Truly love your work, man!! You & Ry give slide a good name!! Nobody can make big eyed beans from Venus move like you do!!

Can't blame Ry Cooder for bailing out but Trout Mask is still a million times better than anything he's ever done.

@shaddartshaddart It allowed for the vocals to be mixed in stereo live, also to give Don's voice more volume when playing live.

In response to mollkatles re; the "dullness" of Beefheart and Zappa, please provide an example of an artist who is not "dull". I would like to present a musical challange. Listen to Zappa- the "Roxy and Elsewhere", album, starting with "Village of the Sun". If anyone can provide and example of a more accomplished live band playing in a more technically proficient non dull manner, please do so. Also, Beefheart "My Head Is My Only House.. and "Too Much Time" . Classics that will outlive us.

The drum patterns on one of the tracks on Weasels Ripped My Flesh is similar to "The Blimp(Moustrap Replica)" but that would mean Zappa borrowing Beefheart.

@capoeirnesto With a Theremin! Played on the album by Dr. Samuel Hoffman, I believe...and there's no special effect on his voice but that's where the "microphone-breaking voice" myth came from because it happened at that session. Or, DIDN'T happen, I should say!

Does Ry Cooder have a glass eye? His eyes look strange.
@sammyscotch99455 жыл бұрын
Yes he does. He accidentally stabbed himself in the eye when he was 4, hence a glass eye. I can never tell which one is real and which is glass. Does that make me a bad person?

I think when Doug Moon says "unsyncopated" he means "syncopated"...anyway Safe As Milk and Clear Spot are for me the most over-rated of Captain Beefheart's albums. Ice Cream For Crow is probably the most under-rated.

The only good that came from Captain Heartbeef...was Ry Cooder realizing what a joke Van Vliet was, quitting the band...and going on to greatness.
