Came across this by the cover on KZbin here! Holy trip back in time! I honestly purchased this just because of the 1st album's wild cover like I did with a lot of Bands back in the day. Captain Beyond was excellent! I even purchased the CD's a while back with other from my youth like Frank Marino & Mahogany Rush. ELP Hawkwind. Utopia Neil Merriweather's Space Rangers. Bob Welch's Paris band and on and on! Thank You for sparking some old memories!!!

Cool band that I would've never checked out had it not been for hearing Grant, SOT, and others mention. I dig them

Jaw dropped second I heard the opening of DMBackwards! Floored. Had to learn that drum beat asap. Took me awhile but I can nail it. IMO the best drum intro beat in rock history. Listened to CD a ton, couldn’t get enough. Disappointed with 2nd. No Bobby Caldwell made them lose spark, balls n power.

Bobby Caldwell was good friends with Gregg Allman.Johnny Winter And toured with the Allman Brothers Band

Very good band...the one many like to mention (along with Big Star) when the subject turns to unknown/obscure bands. So much so that their Obscurity membership probably needs to be revoked...They were an early 70's 'supergroup' made up of bits of Deep Purple, Johnny Winter & Iron Butterfly. Three very good albums: s/t, Sufficiently Breathless & Dawn Explosion. I'd honestly rank all 3 about equal. I also have their collection Lost & Found 1972-1973. Rod Evans (Purple) on vocals, Bobby Caldwell (Johnny Winter) on drums, Larry Reinhardt/Lee Dorman from Iron Butterfly on guitar/bass. Musically you've got rock, prog, fusion, space rock, bluesy rock. Kind of a 'fish out of water' on Capricorn Records. Besides (Beyond?) the obvious musical links you've also got relationships to: Armageddon (one mid 70's s/t prog album), Noah's Ark, Head Machine (late 60's with Ken Hensley/Lee Kerslake), Octopus (1971's Restless Night), The Motels, Toe Fat (two early 70's albums), The Second Coming (1970 s/t album with Dickey Betts/Berry Oakley - good album!), G-Force (by way of Willy Daffern - this is the short-lived early 80's Gary Moore band), Hunger (late 60's, Strictly From Humger & The Lost Album), Pipedream (yet another 'supergroup' with members of Cactus/Alice Cooper/Vanilla Fudge/Alcatrazz), Double Trouble, The Standells, and Truk (one 1970 album called Truk Tracks)... The band split/reformed several times in the 70's (and again in the 90's), there were some lawsuits, their label wasn't overly happy with their style of music, drummers were switched out, lots of 'rotating' band members (Wiki lists 20) - in other words kind of a mess. Except on record

I have 8 albums and 2 EPs from them, but three are live recordings.

8 albums and only 3 are live? So they did 5 studio albums? 😮

@@pablodapeckerhead9902 I know there's The Completer - Live Bootleg Anthology (1971-1977) on 2 disks - which I don't have. And Live In Texas - October 6, 1973 (official bootleg) - posted on YT (I believe that one is also available as a boot under several other titles). I've also seen mentioned Night Train Calling, a 4 track EP from 2000 - these are reunion sessions (again see YT for some of these tracks)...I have the collection Lost & Found 1972-1973 which is pretty good
@lance98541Ай бұрын
@@pablodapeckerhead9902 No, they only recorded 3 studio albums. The rest are comps and live recordings.

Great show, men! Captain Beyond are the very definition of a cult band. Members with a certain pedigree, from their former groups and associations. This band fell prey to some of the pitfalls and issues that affect a myriad amount of artists and musicians. First off, what the heck are they doing on Capricorn Records?! That’s a southern rock label, bro. Second, how DO you categorize Captain Beyond? Answer, you can’t. Are they Prog? No, no widdly diddly keyboardist. Jazz? No, no horn section. Rock and roll? Yes, but how do you market a faceless new band? It’s quite difficult… especially when you’re the WRONG record label! 🤦🏻 I know, and enjoy, their debut album quite a bit. “Dancing Madly Backwards,” for example, is genius. However, l really have to explore their other two recordings. Keep up the fine work y’all do here. And please make sure that young Logan keeps all the aisles clear! Thank you. ~ Davey Cretin, from Cretin Classics.
