My favourite Buckeye rocker of all is one who never who never made an album---just one known single to his credit, but it was a BANGER ("No Reason") and that was Captain Foam! It was Richard Bertram, an axe wielding maniac from Canton, OH whose claim to fame was trying to out-Blue Cheer Blue Cheer with a battery of Traynor amps lining the stage every time he played. His single made its way to Europe and has a cult following over there

With a better singer I think The Godz could've been something. I've seen them described as 'macho, mean biker boys' who ran with the late 70's band Angel. BTW I've got a 1974 album called Pass On This Side (kinda psyche/pop) by a different band of the same name, probably mistitled. Features two members (the singer & drummer) of this band. Oddly I don't mind Fradkin's singing on that one...Don't know anything about Watershed - might need to investigate further...Blue Ash's No More No Less was a very solid album...The Human Beinz's other good tune was "Turn On Your Love Light" (also 1968)...From Left End I've got the album called Spoiled Rotten (1974), pretty good (kinda punky rock with some Glam mixed in). There was a self-titled comp issued this year (whih includes this track). They also have a 1989 album called Live Living And Breathing that I don't own... The Bears = Adrian Belew's band, excellent. And Eureka isn't even their best - that would be Rise And Shine plus their s/t debut. I love Belew! Not many can marry up prog & pop (he's a huge Beatles fan) with some truly first-rate/cutting edge guitar chops. Also worth checking out is related band The Raisins with their 1983 s/t album (not prog though & no Belew), and Psychodots (1993's On The Grid)...Glass Harp with Phil Keaggy is wonderful, 7 excellent albums...Raspberries are (for me) the 2nd best power pop band ever...MSB had some cool stuff (also under his own name without the 'Band'). Stage Pass, Cabin Fever & Msb are good albums...Not sure it's the same band (they're from NZ so probably not) Mother Goose but I know of 3 albums: Stuffed, Don't Believe In Fairytales & This Is Life (1977-82). Weird mix of musical styles, kinda pop rock bordering on novelty songs mixed with Glam

I'm not a huge Styx fan although I do own a bunch of their albums...So the first two - I'd rate II slightly above the first but I couldn't give either one more than a 5 (out of 10) tops - and that's stretch for me (after all need to leave room for the better/later albums - see below). Neither is a great (or even very good) album IMO. Tracks I like: "After You Leave Me", "Best Thing", "Lady", "A Day", "You Need Love". Equinox, maybe Pieces Of Eight, Brave New World sound better to me. I think their best albums are actually some of the later ones: The Mission, Big Bang Theory, Brave New World, Crash Of The Crown & their best Cyclorama. I'm not big on The Grand Illusion which many will probably name as among their best. This probably puts me at odds with many/most Styx fans. I always found this band to be somewhat unsure of what they wanted to be - sometimes out-and-out prog, sometimes art rock or pomp, also pop & 'straight' rock at other times. Maybe my biggest 'issue' is with DeYoung's vocals, I'm just not crazy about his voice. Not as bad as say REO Kevin Cronin's (the way he phrases what he sings really rubs me the wrong way) but still...
@armbreakerКүн бұрын
There used to be a very grainy with terrible sound live video clip of the original Styx performing outside at what looked like a college. For some reason I think it was removed from the air. But what you could hear of it was great, it was pure early 70's hard rock.

The Isleys - oh yeah! 1966/67 were huge years for them. For newbies the collections The Motown Anthology & The Complete Motown Singles (various volumes) feature a slew of their tracks/hits... A 'better alternative' to the sugary bubblegum pop of Ohio Express would be The Archies (no I'm not kidding) - obviously not for an OH-based show (they're from NYC). Some really catchy albums: s/t, Jingle Jangle, Sunshine & This Is Love between 1968-71. To be fair Ohio Express DID have some individual tunes that were harder rockin' like "Try It", "I Know We'll Be Together", "First Grade Reader" (full-on psyche), "She's Not Coming Home" (very Monkees), "Pinch Me", "Sausalito", " Up Against The Wall". These tunes have a rock edge to them that doesn't really fit their bubblegum label. Also calling them a band is a bit of a stretch - more like a collection of musicians (Wiki uses the term 'brand name'). I have to say that "Yummy Yummy", the song everyone knows, isn't the best OP choice except when highlighting that bubblegum/lightweight side to their music - might also play "Chewy Chewy" (that '69 album is super syruppy)...Ties to The Cyrcle. Circus' 1973 s/t album is a good one. A band not to be confused with the late 60's prog band of the same name (s/t 1969 album), or the Swiss mid/late 70's proggers (s/t, Movin On & Fearless Tearless And Even Less)

Red Rocker Trivia Question...What was the only H/S/A/S track performed at a Van Halen concert ??
@wolf19773 күн бұрын
EVH played on Hagar's "Give To Live" & "Eagles Fly"...I found this list online of Hagar songs that VH played live (at least occasionally) - not sure it's accurate. Based on this nothing from HSAS though: "There's Only One Way to Rock" "Eagles Fly" "Deeper Kinda Love" "Tropic of Capricorn" "Hallelujah" "Give to Live" "High Hopes" "Someday" "Amnesty Is Granted" "The Love" "Standin' at the Same Old Crossroads" "Red" "I Can't Drive 55" "Make It Last" "Rock Candy"
@ericrobertson20243 күн бұрын
@wolf1977 Since You Came, originally on the HSAS - MTV Live Show was played live during the Carnal Tour. It was retitled The Love in 99 on Red Voodoo...So that list is accurate but the song was still titled Since You Came in 1992.

3 Cleveland bands well worth checking out that didn't get played: American Noise-"S/T"- 1980-Great AOR Breathless-"S/T" - 1979-Great AOR Damnation Of Adam Blessing-"The Damnation Of Adam Blessing"- 1969 and "The Second Damnation"-1970-Great Psych Rock!
@wolf19774 күн бұрын
Adam Blessing has some really good stuff, those first three albums are great (s/t, The Second Damnation, Which Is The Justice Which Is The Thief). Glory from '72 is also solid...American Noise's s/t 1980 album is good...I have the 2nd Breathless album (Nobody Leaves This Song Alive) which is OK. Honestly that first album (posted on YT) is a little 'light' for me - kinda on the 'yacht' side of AOR. Compared to a band like The Raspberries it lacks that 'oomph' that makes for great power pop. Maybe along the lines of the weaker Michael Stanley stuff... Related band The Innocent (also out of Cleveland with Trent Reznor & Rodney Cajka played with Michael Stanley-not sure they were included here as I haven't watched the whole video yet) has a decent album called Livin' In The Street from '85 - AOR with a little more grit (and some Glam) but still too many slower numbers. "Freeway Ride" & "Dora" are pretty good tracks, so are "The Names Have Been Changed" & "Back In My Life"...And The Choir, late 60's Raspberries precursor with Dave Smalley/Jim Bonfanti/Wally Bryson (and before them The Mods), along with a later mid 70's Bryson band called Tattoo (solid 1976 s/t album)... Dreamstreet is another mid 80's Cleveland band, kinda MOR/AOR, with members of The Innocent, with a 1986 album called Heartzone - a couple of decent tracks...Also how about Beau Coup (yet more mid 80's AOR/power pop) with 1987's Born & Raised (On Rock & Roll). Jonah Koslen & The Heroes (also worked with MSB). Cellarful Of Noise (two 80's albums)...A little more 'obscure' but the mid 60's The Alarm Clocks, kinda proto punk

Danger Zone, Three Lock Box This Is Sammy Hagar: When The Party Started is a nice collection plus The Essential Red Collection & Unboxed...I'm not as big on Montrose (the band) as some others but I do like various tracks off the debut, Paper Money, Warner Bros. @@ericrobertson2024 I kinda like the debut Lizzy album (especially with the 1971 New Day EP included on the expanded version). The 1983 comp Whiskey In The Jar has a couple of other good tracks from that period on it. However Vagabonds is for me where the band really takes off... I also like both Book of Taliesyn & Shades Of (expanded) from '68. Pretty good stuff for 1968. "Why Didn't Rosemary", "Shield", "One More Rainy Day", "Shadows", "And The Address". Killer keyboards, and Blackmore is starting to 'stretch'. Then again I'm pretty big on late 60's psyche. "Hush" of course is an all time classic track. @@ericrobertson2024 There's also the collection Thin Lizzy - The Continuing Saga Of The Ageing Orphans from 1979 which features tracks from the '71 EP plus select cuts from the first 3 albums, but remixed & changed by adding new recordings (only 3 tracks are the same as the originals). These are also bonus tracks on the various expanded rereleases of those albums too... I don't follow JTMN on YT but just took a quick peek. Yep Johnny The Fox is the latest episode - very good album but not up to Fighting or Jailbreak, or even Night Life (the expanded version of each - at least for me). From that same Lizzy period I also have the good At The BBC plus the 5 disk box called '1976'. That contains both albums from that year plus a ton of demos & outtakes of those tracks. Even a different/jammy version of "Got To Give It Up" (Black Rose - my fave TL album). Also an instrumental demo of "Funky Job", an acoustic version of "Fight Or Fall" (wonderful) & different versions of "Rocky"/"Johnny The Fox Meets Jimmy The Weed ", as well as a live show from Cleveland from Nov '76. The collections Rockers & Rock Legends also contain some 1976 tracks..TL is one of my all time favorite bands for sure & 1976 was a great year for the band, based on that year it seemed like Lizzy was destined to be huge.... Actually what really brings both bands together is the TL album Funky Junction-Tribute To Deep Purple from '73. They cover early DP tunes like "Hush", " Strange Kind Of Woman", "Speed King", "Black Night", "Corina", "Fireball". TBH I'm not into that record but it's an interesting one-off project. Wiki says that this was actually by a band called Funky Junction which included Lynott/Downey/Bell (with Lynott mainly playing bass - no lead vocals) plus a couple of members of another band called Elmer Fudd. A guy named Benny White sings the leads - said to an Ian Gillan clone (but not nearly as good to my ears). Weird story re: that album, TL's name was removed & the cover actually shows the (excellent) band Hard Stuff (recorded on the DP label)

Heck a reworked Slipped My Disco and Proud to be an American could have worked if they had had a song to follow.

This is Hagar between Three Lock Box & VOA - I think this is better than either of those. And just post Frontiers Tour-Journey. The expanded edition is good with additional live tracks added - and yes the additional/expanded version does exist (although I only have the music files not the cd). I like this album, they call it "semi-live". Actually the 'shredding' is a little over the top for me on some tracks. I think the relative lack of practice as a band prior to this recording shows a bit - I wonder what this really sounded like pre-'tweaking' (guitar overdubs). Still, some good stuff here. Overall I think I agree with DC here, the songs are OK but not great. With the extra tracks added I like 8 total songs on this one (out of 15). I've also read that Tom Petersson (Cheap Trick) almost joined this lineup instead of Aaronson. So I'd have to give this one maybe a 7 out of 10
