Sparks are one of my favorite groups. Love their 70s output, from the 80s, I only have Whomp That Sucker and Angst In My Pants. Both fine albums.

I find out so hard to believe their later albums didn't chart in England (and so low on the states). Ray's writing is so strong, original and creative. I personally enjoyed their music than the Stones and listen to them consistently. Way to many missed out on this band.

@t.josephcravens4272 0 seconds ago I always liked Sweet and owned the US comp version of Desolation Blvd as a kid, but didn't do the deep dive until recently. To my ears, they were a top shelf band. Great players, vocalists, and songwriters. They haven't gotten the credit they deserve because of their bubblegum origins and outside songwriting, obviously, but they quickly redeemed themselves. Mick Turner is one of my favorite UK drummers - every bit as good as Bonham, Moon, Ward, R. Taylor, Cozy et al.

The only thing I know by Gary is a song on the Guitar Speak III album. It's called That Boy's Evil. It is a really heavy surf instrumental.

I think its amazing that Kate Bush can transcend so many tastes. You can be the most staunch extreme metaller and still find yourself singing along to Cloudbursting and Snowflake. The sign of a pure artist

Had hoped to be joining at the time but life got in the way, plus the time difference doesn't help. Always curious how Kate Bush translates in the US. I remember her first time on Top Of The Pops, one of those 'what was that' moments. But i loved it, and the debut album The Kick Inside. And never lost interest after that. She is unique in wanting to make music, not wanting to be a star, and does so at her own pace. Great choice of songs in both shows, Grant. As for the remasters, the box sets are nice but there is nothing in the way of extra packaging in them. No booklets except what came with the originals. You can buy The Other Sides separately, at least here in the UK. And it's worth it for sure. I was lucky to get to the penultimate show of the run she did in 2014. The atmosphere was electric, and never seen a show to match it. Probably never will. She did 6 songs, then 9th Wave. Brief break and then it was A Sky Of Honey in full rounding up with a 2 song encore, Among Angels and Cloubusting.

I rate the original version of She Talks In Stereo Top 3 in LA new wave with Yellow Pills by 20/20 & Hurt by Code Blue right with it. The Geffen record is underrated.

I read about that Bruce Wooley disc being released and sort of forgot about it. Thanks for the reminder, Schnee! Gotta get that ordered! I've only ever had English Garden on a comp. Would also LOVE to find a Tom Dickie and The Desires! The Divinyls album you were referencing is Underworld and from what I understand, it was never released in the US. (?) As far as Gary Myrick goes, I love the 1st record and it seems to fit right in with the New Wave. Beyond that, I just couldn't get into any of those follow ups. It's been forever though - maybe I'll revisit.
@StephenSchnee14 сағат бұрын
Hi Keith. I don't think Tom Dickie will ever be released on CD although I did transfer both vinyl LPs to digital and cleaned up the sound.... And yes, Underworld is the Divinyls album I was thinking about. Never heard a lick from it!

As the bassist for Tallwater, Grant certainly has an ear for the phenomenal fretless bass guitar playing from the late, great John Giblin. He’s featured on many of the tunes that Mr. Arthur has featured in both parts of his livestream. Merry Christmas, Grant! 🎄 🎅

This was a great discussion to listen to especially as you touched on The Residents and one of my favourites Kraftwerk. If, when you come to recording a Kraftwerk album review, would you like a view from across the pond to go with your North American ones? A Britsh/European opinion???? On the subject of Sparks, I disagree with the opinion that Ron's lyrics aren't as good as Dylan, mmm no he is definitely out there. I think both Terminal Jive and Pulling Rabbits Out Of A Hat, get poor responses from most UK fans (Rabbits wasnt released in the UK for some reason). Whomp/Angst/Space are a definite 3sum album set /classics (Angst is in my top 5) but I have a greater love for Rabbits. Sparks did not tour those albums and those after from here on in, in the UK BTW. Wasnt too impressed by MYCDT (I was happy they didnt include Changes on it here in the UK as that was a superb stand alone single). Interior Design was mediocre bu had some bright spots including the excellent 12 inch remix of Just got Back from Heaven. Have subscribed. Great stuff.

One For the Road introduced the Kinks to a New Generation with a great live recording for the time; was their WE ARE BACK ALBUM. Rock enough so the youth of day could embrace and sentimental enough for the older faithful, one of the best Live Albums of all time.

Thank you for bringing this up. Waterloo Sunset is also one of my favourite songs of all time but I really like a big part of the music from their Arista years. Number one for me is Sleepwalker, almost all songs are great, I like the production and I think it was a rebirth for the band. Daves guitar playing is tasteful och very good. The other albums have a lot of great songs but they are a little uneven. My second favourite is Low Budget and the double live album one of my favourite live albums.

"David Watts", "She's Got Everything", "Victoria" & "Deadend Street" are remarkeable... "Ev'rybody got secrets that they want to hide. When midnight comes along, I take a look inside. Don't go talkin' in your sleep: I might come in for a peep, Oh yeah"

Not sure if it's true but I hear Art Lover is actually misunderstood about being what you mentioned. I read it was about a grandfather who was estranged from his granddaughter and seeing the other kids in the park reminded him of her...also Live Life from Misfits is the best Kinks song no one knows

Great topic, Grant. I can't say the Arista era is my favorite, but I love it, it's the Kinks era of my formative years back when they were my favorite band. I've always had an issue with the term arena rock, because they would play Columbus after every new record and back then Columbus didn't have a true concert arena, they always played at Veterans' Memorial which was comparatively small. Grant, you're a central Ohio guy, am I mistaken or did the Pretenders actually open for them at one of those shows? Anyway, this era produced my favorite Kinks album, Sleepwalker. My ranking is a bit different than you guys': 1 Sleepwalker, 2 Give the People What They Want, 3 State of Confusion, 4 Misfits, 5 Low Budget and 6 Word of Mouth. For some reason, Living On a Thin Line has never really connected with me, though I know I'm in the minority. Outside of Stormy Sky and Jukebox Music from Sleepwalker, my favorite song from this era is probably Cliches of the World (B Movie) from State of Confusion, a very dark, even brutal song. By the way, Ray once said that Art Lover has been misinterpreted, that it's really about a father denied custody of his daughter so he can only have contact with her from afar, and if you listen to the lyrics from that perspective it does make sense. But who knows, songwriters are often dishonest about their own work. Anyway, great show, guys!

Low budget is my favorite album
@timo68303 күн бұрын
"Low Budget" is probably my favorite. Even though I hate the production, I love the songs and energy of "Give the People...", (FYI - Ray has said "Art Lover" is supposed to be about a divorced dad watching the girls play in the park because he misses his daughter. NO WAY he would get away with that song these days. lol). "Word of Mouth" is under rated and I couldn't believe it wasn't more popular and That "Do It Again" didn't crack the top 40. I had the vinyl version of "State of Confusion" and 2 of the best songs, "Long Distance and "Noise" weren't''t included on that. I didn't even know they existed until years later. I never understood why they were only on the cassette version of the album. "Sleepwalker" and "Misfits" are fine but interchangeable to me. I rarely listen them except for a couple of tracks. "One for the Road' has a special place in my heart as it was my introduction to The Kinks.

Fun & entertaining episode fella's.😎👍 I agree with Schnee, this is my favorite era too. I remember hearing 'A Rock 'n' Roll Fantasy' and 'Celluloid Hero's' on the radio at the time and thinking nobody does melancholy like the Brits. Spent the summer of '79 in Vancouver Washington and 'Low Budget' was all over the radio. Only saw them live once, 21 Aug '81 at the Greek Theatre in Berkeley with Joe Ely opening. It was general admission. I was close enough to witness the copious amount of spittle Ray would emit while singing. Ray was on fire even between songs. He criticized Bill Graham for not having the rug, they were standing on, cleaned before they played. He also took a swipe at Dave & Mick. They didn't seem to care. I did buy a copy of 'Give the People...' after that show.

This is definitely my favorite era of the kinks sleepwalker, low budget, state of confusion and the totally underrated 1984 classic which is one of my top favorite kinks album how contrarian hehe word of mouth however one small criticism of the Arista years is the huge lack of Dave Davies songs it's definitely Ray's show at this stage in their career
