Ah Carrier Command. The game I wanted waaaay before I owned an Amiga, then took ages to actually buy it when I had one, and then realised I was rubbish at it 🤣

I liked this one. What I did was reverse the carrier to the island close to the command center and use the carriers laser to take it out.

@@AmigosRetroGaming Oh yes. Played tons of it back in the day, but on an Atari ST. An all time classic! I also play carrier command 2, the modern version which is also very good if one liked cc1. But those old shaded polys - nostalgia up to 11. Birth of a genre. Just genius.

I had this as a pack-in title with my Atari ST back in 1990. I played this game to death and used all sorts of attack strategies, but never got beyond the first few islands because I couldn't work out the resupply/refueling mechanism. That said, I loved it then and I love it now. Having come back to this on my A500 mini, I've sunk more days into it and have played it to completion 3 times: once by sinking the carrier at the final top-right island, once by taking it out with about 10 islands to go and once by taking it out near the centre of the map after /only/ 7-8 hours. I've also died many many different ways including being sunk by the enemy, having my supply lines cut, messing up my planning and running out of fuel and most annoyingly destroying my own resupply drone. As you said, the only thing that's missing is a time-skip feature which means that it's unlikely that I'd ever finish a simulation game starting with no islands. I heard an interview with the developer who said that he tried to build this in at the last minute before release, but didn't have time. Given how early that was, it's a real shame that games were never updated on the budget re-release as adding this in at that point would have made this game near-perfect.
@AmigosRetroGaming3 ай бұрын
That's true--if it could have been updated for the budget release it would have really turned the game around! Props to you for beating the game in "only" 7-8 hours! :)

Carrier Command and Armor Geddon were 2 of my favorite Amiga Games. Then on the PC Hostile Waters and Carrier Command (Bohemia Interactive) in 2001 and 2012 are also MUST for the genre fans

I got this on My Atari St. Loved the game although could not complete it as i had version 1.0 which had a bug where in a full game there was never enough fuel generated and after the 3rd island you run out of fuel. Still Arcade mode was playable.

Hahaha. Absolutely love the stone throwing Aaron 😂 I used to be a big fan of his, then his focus shifted from being about the community and interesting projects and tips to being more about himself and "look what i have" or "had"... Using AI of living actors to intro his sponsored videos and the audacity to buy a KITT replica and then ask for baby donations was the final straw... I don't know how his subs can stomach that behaviour.

@AmigosRetroGaming3 ай бұрын
I played on the MISTer, so yeah a quicker 1200. I did see this played on a variety of other machine...it isn't the quickest on the lower end stuff. Any accelerated machine or a good 486 should play this nicely. I didn't try it on the ST as I figured it might come up in the future on The Atari ST show and I like to come in fresh.

Not sure the Amiga got smoked by MS-DOS, as back then, they were fairly similar if you had a fast CPU like I did. Probably F1GP is where the Amiga fell behind. The lines of white dots on the ocean in the PC version looks smooth, but horrible, compared to the random waves on the Amiga.
@AmigosRetroGaming3 ай бұрын
It's not so much the technical aspects as the Amiga version lacking the most crucial feature of the game. But you're right, from a technical perspective format wars are mostly useless because most of the performance was based on the hardware you had at the time. The whole "PC sound was horrible" argument falls apart if you consider anyone who had a sound card on PC, and Amiga speed issues were for those who had stock CPUs in their 500s and 1200s.

The DOS version smoked the Amiga one?? If I remember correctly. the DOS version has virtually no sound, I remember the carrier making no sound at all, which was really a downer. Was there a better version you guys judge it on?
@AmigosRetroGaming3 ай бұрын
The biggest reason the DOS version was better was it was a more complete game. Not being able to artificially speed up time in the Amiga version makes it next to impossible to play the game to completion, unless you want to leave your computer on for days on end.
