If that's how you're playing the game, then you're missing the point. Maxis described it as a software toy, meaning that "winning" is an abstract concept with SimEarth, it's more about the journey than the destination.
@Leyvin8 жыл бұрын
+Fixed Fun • Then you haven't won anything, you're merely watched the game play itself. Even still while you can reach the preface then skip to the final chapter in a book to "Win" said book, that isn't the point in reading it in the first place and you miss out on all the context in-between that makes it entertaining and interesting to begin with. I've often had this argument with friends in the industry about approaches to developing Video Game narratives... where I'm often told "Story is merely window dressing for the Gameplay and Mechanics that they've not seen before or like in other games. Engagement comes from giving them 'Cool' set-piece moments." Yet personally, I argue that the ending or even "Win Scenario" is completely unimportant. Instead what matters is the Journey in-between. This is why pacing and weaving mechanics into the story that you're telling is important to the audience ... it's what keeps them coming back for more. As *that* is what engages them. If all people really cared about was Gameplay, then Arcade Games would still be the biggest sellers. Yet they're not; and you see this clear as day in the Sales of titles that begin to Omit Single Player or don't provide players with this interesting Start-to-Finish Narrative that they can then retell at the 'Water Cooler' (as it were). We all know how a story starts and ends... what we don't know is how the fuck things led to it. That's where entertainment is, leaning on peoples abilities to discover and be amazed when things aren't predictable. It's the "WTF" Moments, and it's why Video Games are such a dominant media over traditional static media; as while that'll be entertaining the first time you watch it - it's never going to surprise you.
@Leyvin8 жыл бұрын
***** • It could've been a platform limitation... have you tried to play the DOS version? It's still not *fast paced* or strictly as direct influence as Sim City, but having life survive isn't always a guarantee. Personally as a teen I liked the concept of Sim Earth more than the actual game. While my brothers essentially enjoyed it because they played it like they would Sim City - so build up a Civilisation then just throw every disaster at them to see how it all falls apart. So in a way for them it was like getting to the "Fun" bit of Sim City without the tedious city building that was like playing Jenga on a boat. Honestly I didn't really enjoy Maxis games until Sim Ant and Tower. Tower remains one of my favourite to this day... Sim City 2000 certainly improved on the original, and was much more hands on - but then with 3000 and 4 they started to abstract it again; and eh lost interest. I'd say this game certainly isn't for everyone, but I think modern interpretations of it (like ECO, where you craft an Ecosystem to see how it evolves and the effects of change... but it's still in early access) are awesomely interesting - although less of a game and more of an interactive "what if..." experiment. Sim Earth sorta was like that too, where you got more out of it via being more involved with it.

Nanomachines inside their bodies enhance and regulate their abilities. Genetic control. Information control. Emotion control. Battlefield control. Everything is monitered, and kept under control. Birds has changed. The age of deterrence has become the age of birds. All in the name of averting catastrophe from weapons of mass destruction. And he who controls the birds, controls history. @LGR - I realize I am commenting on a two year old video, but I have to say that was probably the single best script writing I've ever heard on KZbin. The way you took what is portrayed in the game as a slightly academic endeavor and created an engaging, funny, and thoughtful story which was not only entertaining, but prescient as well is a real testimony to your talent as a writer. It was the most imaginative and relatable way to review a game as complex as SimEarth. If I hadn't just lost my job a few weeks ago, I would be signing up on your Patreon page right this moment because I can tell this is your passion and I can respect the kind of creativity and dedication which that requires. Ignore the game element, and take a look at dwarf fortress' world generation. It is perfect for these kinds of stories. It simulates a fantasy world for thousands of years, down to every single individual that ever lived in the world. My favourite story that I discovered in a generated world, was one where a devil had reached the surface of the earth, and pretended to be a human. He then went to a city, and used his political skills to manipulate himself into becoming the king in a former republic. He then sat as a king for a thousand years.

i love simearth to death. while other titles like simcity always boasted of their (nonexistent, biased) realism, simearth set out to truly be a simulation. not trying to throw shade on simcity, but simearth was refreshing, as like a real scientifc simulation, it had a model that could be modified, recognized its flaws as a model, and centered itself around a hypothesis, the gaia hypothesis (demonstrating it while not endorsing it 100%) ig my love for simearth is ideologically grounded: i really like the educational, simulation aspect over the game aspect. reading the manual is like geekass heaven lol there's really no games out there like these edutainment maxis games. they were so ambitious! like simearth is literally a full-blown earth simulator that i've never ever seen before. despite all the 90s jank, to me, it remains the best entry in the simulation/edutainment genre on the grounds considering how innovative it is as simulation

the only aspect from Minecraft No Man's Sky has is exploration. Aside from this, it's totally different from Minecraft.

Great clip Clint. The moment you mentioned the Bird people I was remined of 'Hawk' from Buck Rogers' ill-fated second season.

One day my dad brings home a pirated version of this game including the manual that had been xeroxed. I remember reading the Gaia theory paragraph and everything. That brings back some memories. When in doubt blow it up. I ended up bombarding the planet with a bunch of ice comets to start things off.

My parents bought me this on the day that I got my braces in 1990 to make me feel better and take my mind off of my aching teeth and raw gums. Unfortunately, my excitement over it wore off faster than my mouth pain did and I don't really have any pleasant memories of it. I remember being disappointed that it was more of an education tool than a game. In fact, I wonder if it cost twice as much as games normally did in 1990 because they were really marketing it to schools. At least they were up front that it was more of a tool than a game, but I don't think that I aware of that at the time and I expected more of a game like SimCity. For 1990, it was pretty impressive, though, just not a whole lot of "fun," at least not in my case, since I guess that I didn't have enough imagination to come up with the Tragedy of the Bird People.

Great vid Clint. Also, when did the hot button icons like the two you put at the end of the video start working with mobile devices? That's really nice. I watched the Sim Copter vid because of that.

I had completely forgot about this game, I didn't have it back in the day, but just the name had me wanting it. Thank you very much my good man, this appeals to me on many levels, and you did a fantastic job of showing it off. I'd buy a modern version of this without hesitation.

I remember buying this when it came out not realizing it was for *WINDOWS* PC’s. I was a hardcore Mac user and had no real idea Windows even existed. So when it said PC compatible I thought I was good, after all my Mac *was* a personal computer 😂 God I was dumb. I think my Dad still has it somewhere.

When you talked about the Bird People only using clean energy, I was expecting a poor Aesop. Instead, I got a rather reasonable explanation followed by hilarious and equally reasonable explanation. I applaud you Sir LGR.

i used to make sims stories, too. i had harry potter sims and i created a whole AU with Remus and Sirius and they raised Harry and I had so many other fandom sims that wandered into their lot and i posted them on livejournal and i got so attached. i still miss them sometimes. I miss computer games that you had to play pretend to enjoy, but otoh, i'm old now and I don't think i have that magic childhood wonder anymore.
