This is one of the rare occasions where the entire ensemble is on the bridge. Wesley still around, Beverley not in Sickbay, Geordi at a console rather than in Engineering. That’s when you know this scene was probably a huge deal for the cast.

Beyond that it's a matter of efficiency. He doesn't have to give an order and wait for Crusher to carry it out. Still, it is a factor of Picard putting the safety of the ship into his own hands. I think he also took the Conn in the episode with the Bynars in season one where it was just him and Riker on board.

I remember it being mentioned here and there, especially with the Picard maneuver, but Picard was actually a highly skilled helmsman before taking command and this really allowed him to show that aspect of himself. Most (if not all) Star Fleet officers know about the slingshot effect, and have seen a computer do it or other objects in space do it, or a simulation of it. They've likely never had to see it done in person, and without any computer control.

There's a reason they put the Ensigns on the helm. This is true in real life navies too. It requires them to pay close attention and learn a lot as part of the bridge crew, but just follow orders closely and not make any command decisions. This will help them later in their careers.
@davidmacy411 Жыл бұрын
I love the heck out of this episode but it just occurred to me that if the Enterprise has a stb-aft thruster, its logical to assume there is a port-aft one as well. Turn them on together and that will be all the forward momentum they need to get moving with bursts.

I think he knew it was happening, but didn't want to interrupt his efforts when it was happening, and said it after the fact to reinforce how impressive he found Picard. @AD-kv9kj4 жыл бұрын
@@lrmcatspaw1 Precisely. This is a real reason. It's purely exposition to explain basic ideas to viewers. IF this were in any way a real situation, such a ship and it's crew would have just done this straight away as an utterly standard procedure. However, let's face facts, if the idea of the Federation and Star Trek were to happen in reality in the distant future there would not be any manned ships like this. Everything would be purely automated. Also, aliens would be mind blowingly rare, not everywhere, and none of them would look like humans with a lump on their forehead or a few spots. Humanity would still be almost entirely dwelling on Earth, because no other planet would be able to support human life for endless reasons and engineering entire planets into a stable replica of Earth is never going to happen, again for endless reasons. Living on space ships for many years will very quickly be realised to be horrible and cause all kinds of problems, both physiological and psychological.
To a degree, it probably hurt Picard to destroy that vessel, despite the fact the ship was a trap.
@CountArtha4 жыл бұрын
He probably delegated that order to Riker for a reason, yeah. he said "make sure it's dealt with," knowing that Riker would know what he really meant, but he couldn't say it aloud.

The music is something that gives the earlier seasons a lot of charm. This episode is certainly one example. The music in the later seasons was so bland and generic. I recall hearing it was something Rick Berman wanted, something about "the music should be like paint on a wall".

One of the reasons many underestimate Picard. remember too, those of you complaining about the ship being powered down, the big D also has backup fusion generators too, three of them in the saucer section and one in the secondary or engineering hull. A single fusion engine can easily handle life support, shields, thrusters and sensors. With all four running the ship can run at full capacity and still make warp 2 to 3 without the warp core. This is a perfect example of how good writing can make an incredibly dumb idea an excellent episode. I mean really all they did was just shut everything down (which if I recall correctly should actually cause a warp core breach) and use maneuvering thrusters to get out. With a real life crew that probably would've been the second thing they tried.
@GalenMarekOfficial5 жыл бұрын
The Rainbow Right Things like warp core containment and life support OBVIOUSLY remained functioning, dude.
@Jianju694 жыл бұрын
@@GalenMarekOfficial Yes, warp-core containment would have redundant safeties, yet the crew would be fine without life support for at least a few minutes.
@KingdaToro4 жыл бұрын
The core would have been shut down, which includes removing any antimatter from it, and the containment fields in the antimatter storage would have been left on. The ONLY way to deliberately shut them down is with self-destruct.

This was pretty poor writing actually. At least in this scene. Something Star Trek has long dealt with. Why would Picard want to be at conn? Riker is a better pilot and Data can pretty much plot out a course in milliseconds. Why is Data surprised by using a gravitational slingshot? That's been a standard technique since the 60s (the 1960s). This is good popcorn TV. But it isn't well written TV.

The storyline and even some scenes are a direct print of the episode "Space Warp" from _Space: 1999._

It makes me wonder why Data never thought of using the slingshot maneuver. He certainly was surprised when Picard had pulled it off successfully.
@EarlJohn61 Жыл бұрын
Perhaps, because most "slingshots" involve a small (probe sized) object entering an orbital path around a large (Moon sized or bigger) natural object. Then using the gravitational effect to impart extra energy on the small object. In this Picard was aiming a much larger wessel directly at a much smaller rock in space. The slingshot effect, would've normally been too small to work with, and would've added more chaos to the already chaotic asteroid field. Data's calculations wouldn't've been able to anticipate the correct timing and impulse needed.

In the alternate reality episode, Wesley was a captain.What was so cool about that episode is each one of those could have a show more and more different from the one we watched.It is like how many fans wanted to see Riker and Data as a captain of their own ship and that become the show or was always the show. Plus there would be the reality it would be a comedy show in a sense like Red Dwarf was for British tv. I felt that way about DS9 too as in some ways it was much darker than the other treks.They did that one episode where Worf was on a Klingon ship with Alexander I mean that could of been its own show too.There is just so much it is amazing when you think about it. In one reality Wesley is a badass captain that would be kind of funny to of seen.

@DanRaidersWarriorsSharksGiants4 жыл бұрын
@@gamepad3153 Well that would be interesting but hard to have a series on it.It would be somewhat like voyager only instead of going home they would be running away. You ever heard the joke someone said that wouldnt it of been cool to see the reality every one of those enterprises went to the reality of the enterprise where the federation lost and having all those ships destroy every borg they see. I liked they added in that same episode that in their reality the Bajorans defeat the Cardassians and some Cardassians join starfleet.The Bajorans become so powerful they even attack the federation.For how weak they are in our reality to compare it to that is so extreme. When you think about the maquis and ro lauren and kira and garak,dukat and dumar and how their lives would of been completely different in this timeline.Plus the episode was made before DS9 even started. There is also the reality Hugh takes over the Borg and changes them only even more.It is endless how far it goes.

I was around 8 years old when I saw this show in the late 80s and early 90s. I grew up with it. In many ways it shaped me since my dad really was not around much. Seeing how much Patrick Stewart has aged since then is both a bit saddening but also endearing seeing how well his new show "Star Trek Picard" is going. It really has an interesting storyline and I really hope it continues to do well. Also, I do hope that we will find a way to greatly slow or even stop/reverse the aging process. Since the 80s science has made many great advances including into the area of aging and degenerative death. It would be really fitting given that many of what was once presented as science fiction in Star Trek has become science fact in 2020.
