One of the best Star Trek episodes. So visionary and far ahead of its time In an era when empty dumbed down television was the norm.
@dcbradfo6572 ай бұрын
Your comment lacks logic. This episode is a blatant attempt to spin off a new series. They injected a random new plot line attempting to cash in. It is interesting, but it is not visionary, smart television because it adulterates a series that was already visionary, smart television.
@Number6_2 ай бұрын
Roddenberry attempted a lot of spin offs that never happened. But ST is the only one that took. It is still a nice change of pace episode that needed more follow up. The boomers never appreciated what they had or any consideration for future generations as they allowed society to drive off a cliff.

If you watch it carefully, there are some subtle but significant reasons why the captain would want to confine him at least temporarily. For one thing, he beamed aboard the Enterprise without warning - nobody from 1968 Earth would have been able to do that - so they had reason to suspect he was lying. Also they had no way to immediately verify who he was, and his claims were pretty over the top. You have to remember that the Enterprise served as a form of military defender for Earth and they had previously encountered other aliens with dangerous intentions. Gary 7's claims were also rather bleak and ambiguous, and even though he was well spoken, there was an air of rogue about him. He attacked the security guards and tried to use their transporter without permission. All of this considered, his presence there was questionable and he didn't seem entirely harmless, so I probably would have done the same thing. He wasn't harmed anyway, and when things cooled down he could be questioned later after they did a "background check" on him. What if the U.S. Navy found you trying to get onboard a submarine and they had no idea who you were? Regardless of your story, they would want to check you out.
