Ramsey, as several others pointed out, you did the bat defense wrong. You meant to go inside, block the arm and take control. And swing a very light pool noodle is very different from a weighted bat, you won't switch different attack that quick with real bat. However, I doubt the original techniques would work anyway. Cap KM in fact has better chance.
@etherealicer
@etherealicer 2 жыл бұрын
No, I think he does it right, not very cleanly though. But yeah the pool noodle is way too light, making it way too fast (we had the same problem with plastic/foam swords in longsword-training.). Personally, I feel that was not the worst tutorial DUST did put out (I mean in one they do a gun-disarm and simply ignore that the gun actually fires as you can see from the hammer and in one knife disarm he actually stabs himself with the knife in the side. Both times they pretend that did not happen). In principle this technique could work (if the attacker is already moving forward and is committed to the swing) That said, it takes very little training to change the attacking angle enough to completely foil this technique. All you have to do is lift- or drop- your back-hand-shoulder.

Yes, I too think that Ramsey is evading into the wrong side in this case. There is only one side you should go into the adversary in this case and that part is not wrong in the original. But you have to be really fast. I would modify the original technique, to just brutally body tackle at first - you'll get hurt anyway and mutual injury may even the odds. Further, the baseball bat swings fast at the and and slow near the body. So either get max distance i.e. run away or just go full brutality's into the adversary. A baseball bat is a deadly weapon, if used right. If you do not have a brutal mode you are in trouble ...
@etherealicer
@etherealicer 2 жыл бұрын
@RED CHUCKS Obviously, you are unfamiliar with pool noodles... Those light-weight bats are still forward heavy, so it will actually feel heavier when swinging. A pool noodle has virtually no weight and it's center of mass is in the middle.

I don't claim to be an expert, but I do think that most people get one thing about self-defense terribly wrong: if you wait for the attack to counter it, you will get hit! (9 times out of 10) A static target is very easy to hit and reaction is always slower than action. Now, if you move, the opponent has to get the timing right, get the distance and angle right. Else, he might punch instead of the face the front and bent his wrist or break his knuckle, or more often simply miss. With weapons, the effectiveness decreases significantly as well and especially blades need the right alignment, range, and angle. That's why people have survived attacks with machetes while wearing only a pullover or leather jacket and all they sustained were a scratch! The chance of someone using his weapon effectively decreases even further, when he has to fear getting hit himself, as now he can't focus on the attack, but has, even more, to process in a fraction of a second... That's why someone swinging a blunt and rusty machete might still get away without being shot, because the cop/soldier freaks out and misses and then only thinks of blocking incoming attacks. So, how do you do a knife disarm, when the knife is such a crazy fast weapon? Since you got effectively the same range as the attacker, rather try to avoid getting stabbed and try to knock that F-er out! Add a few kicks for distraction as well. If he gets stunned or leans too much into the attack in order to reach you, you got much better chances of getting ahold of his weapon and compromising his balance further. PS: a funny anecdote: I pulled off a disarm against a spear during sparring, by dodging a downwards cut and stepping onto the spear causing it to crash into the floor. It was such a badass moment that made me proud, but I got scolded for nearly breaking the practice weapon. The thing is though, how likely is it that I can pull off that disarm on command? 0%! However, it wasn't quite a lucky moment either. I just used my opportunity as the opponent was already getting tired and did overswing.

There was an old episode of Star Trek: Deep Space Nine where someone is trying to show a knife defense technique they were just taught to another character. The other character predictably has more experience and shows that it wasn't that great a technique. The point? The more experienced character says, "The best way to survive a knife fight is to not get in one." I may not remember it exactly right but I feel like it's pretty accurate. You sure don't try to grab the blade. All these bad techniques show me one thing - the people 'teaching' have never been in a full fight alone with someone or they'd know their techniques are trash.

I noticed too. That instructor went to the inside of the swing, but you tried disarming on the outside (you should have gone to the right of TJ instead of left). (Which I think would be a totally sensible thing to do in general, since even if you miss the disarm, a bat becomes less dangerous the closer you can get to the opponent's body.)

@@RamseyDewey Hear me out here coach. Stepping into the body and wrapping the arms is a legit technique practiced since the days of club and sword swinging. Once weapons had clashed or if you dropped your weapon on the battlefield there was an entire art to close quarters wrestling of an armed opponent. Jotte Stretto? I think it was called. Many of the medieval grandmasters wrote on the subject. I've learned a little of it, and Dale here isn't a million miles away in concept. Although he is making an assumption that the bat is going to just hang there while he strips it. A more realistic approach is to close the distance as fast as you can, expect to take a blow and then over hook the attackers arm and work from the inside. Taking away his biggest weapon, the power end of his swing.

As a weapon guy I can say both techniques are valid but are extremly situational especially the second one. And the part about breaking the guys arm gave me a good laugh. The first technique is best used as a blitz to grab the arm during the swing and it's a last option because you probably will get hit. The second is useful if you're grappling and already managed to grab the knife hand at the wrist. Standing it's not very useful since you need to be in control in order for it to work. And you'll probably get stabbed and cut multiple times before even getting it. I've managed both of these in sparring but it's very rare.

@@SemperFi_EDC_Guy @SemperFi EDC Guy if you grab it properly the edge doesn't touch your hand. I learned it from hema and there are pleanty of videos on halfswording you can look up to see. Again you can only get it on a knife if you have complete control of their hand and it's not easy to do and completly situational. It is possible though not necessarily advisable. I should also add if the blade is too small it would be too hard to grab. The blade should be at least an inch wide. And to answer the other guy. No I would not try to sell them. If I were to teach self defense it would all just be situational awareness. You went the wrong way on the bat defense (as others have pointed out), but it wouldn't have mattered anyway. DUST guy deserves partial credit I guess for attempting to block the bat at the hands and get out of the way of the swing of the bat rather than trying to block the bat itself, but he's not breaking the arm of a 90yr-old granny with osteoporosis with that block. There just isn't enough momentum at the elbow for that impact to do any damage. And no attacker is letting go of the bat that easy. He did nothing to break the grip. At best he's now in a tug-of-war over control of the bat, but more likely, he fails to get a grip of his own because he's only using one hand (the other arm is performing the useless "fulcrum") and the guy simply (intelligently?) beats him to a pulp.
@abortedlord
@abortedlord 2 жыл бұрын
Those featherduster strikes with the noodle are not really a good approximation for a bat. I mean, that doesn't make DUST any good; but the point is they'd have a whole lot more forward momentum than backward and the swing would be more committed to actually do damage. It would be better if you had a rigid core with a foam exterior, and he actually went for a bit of follow-through. What he is doing still would not feel nice with a bat, obviously, I'm not suggesting it would. But what I am saying is that you could just put on a boxing stance and walk forward into that, even if he had a real bat, and once you're any kind of close enough, launching a real counter attack would result in success. The knife stuff is different, being touched with the knife = real damage. Merely being touched with a bat, not so much.

Baseball bat: side step is first big hurdle, trying to use a Qin Na technique without proper training is the second big hurdle, disarming and taking the weapon just like that is the 3rd and the biggest hurdle as off balancing opponent do not mean he'll give up the weapon especially he was holding onto it with 2 hands while the first part of the move only affected one arm but did not affect grip strength of that arm. Knife: definitely gets hand sliced if try to grab the blade; to take away the knife, he has to not just control the arm of the knife but the whole body of the attacker before he can safely disarm the attacker. The big hurdle here is to catch the knife arm and avoid the knife then control the arm and the assailant after. Control must be quick and precise. The better way is to just run away when see that knife.

I have a short question for the coach, in my martial arts school we are taught to punch with the metacarpal bones of the index finger instead of the knuckles for hooks. What is your take on that?
@donqueshot2217
@donqueshot2217 2 жыл бұрын
He spoke about that in another video. If I remember correctly, it depends on your boxing gloves. Bareknuckle or in mma gloves, you should try to use your knuckles, but with boxing gloves, you can use the base of your fingers.

The guy swinging the ‘bat’ was right the first time, but Ramsey said he was not prepared for that contingency, then does a different move from what was shown! But if he was able to get that close in the first place, might as well punch to the face.

If an attacker comes at me with a baseball bat or a knife I simply use the secret technique that my master taught me. It's basically hugging the opponent until they get bored with trying to attack me.

Lol good vid. Where I trained, new comers would be taken completely aback when the very serious and what seemed cold instructor would bring out foam noodles, rope, rubber balls ect. Why, well because men from 18 to mid 50's would tie the foam noodles at certain lengths to our arms and feet, and would than put on a caged hockey helmet and fight with them lol. Can hit as hard as you want without sustaining damage. Which we would commonly without them. It was a fun game. Great for reflexes. Than to be surrounded and try block rubber balls getting whipped at you was always interesting. Pretty sure people looking through the window would be a bit curious, but it was our thing. Knife defense was coloring day. Wash off marker, white clothing, try take rhe marker away from the other guy. When they know how to switch the marker from hand to hand quickly and keep it at the back, you don't get the marker. Usually the only way it was taken was by grabbing the arm, continuously pulling on it so he couldn't grab it in time picking the guy up, and throwing him, than taking it while Over top of him. In that time from if you don't have complete control of his hand with the marker, you still get markered alot. Getting dabbed up with a marker hurts. A knife would be much worse. Knife defense. Running shoes. Well populated areas, give them fake wallet full of fake cards. Simple. Not sure if you actually support Krav maga Ramsey but I personally do not. Some not so well experiences from some very very over confident individuals. I honestly don't know what they were thinking. They openly asked for what was gave to them.

I don't understand the Cpt Kravmaga demo. It's a floating torso swinging way over a pair of legs with a 'foam bat. The legs then begins making knee attacks below the floating torso. It's confusing.

Ramsey, you're usually pretty good in matching the movement of bad self-defense videos, but you botched it on the bat defense one. I think what is throwing you off with the DUST video is that the assailant is "batting left" (which is right foot forward with a left hand-on-top grip, and a "reverse" swing, as swordmanship would call it). The defender is in mirrored foot stance (don't think of it as an orthodox stance) and moves off the forward foot toward the attacker's outer side (which is away from the swing). Compare the DUST footage and Captain Krav Maga's initial movement: You are "batting right" against Captain KM, and he takes up a mirrored foot stance; the starting positions are a mirror of the DUST video, and Captain KM's movement initial entry movement is otherwise identical (although his follow-up is obviously very different). Your own attempts had you first lining up in left foot vs. a (single) right hand/right foot/forward swing, and your attempts to move left to the outside put you moving towards the swing (getting you hit). Later you also attempted to line up left foot vs. "batting right", and again you tried to move off your left foot, once again putting you moving into the swing. Your previous video on this also had the same issue.
