Well, it finally happened… a crossover with Chewjitsu! And what’s more: we have combined our forces to test out questionable self defense techniques. This time, we try out some grappling and hand to hand techniques taught by Dale Brown from Detroit Urban Survival Training.
You can follow Chewey’s channel here: / chewjitsu
Subscribe to Chewjitsu for excellent videos on Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu training. Nick Alvin (aka: Chewey) is a Brazilian jiu-jitsu black belt, a former MMA fighter and wrestler, who has coached BJJ for many years and teaches at Derby City Mixed Martial Arts in Louisville Kentucky, USA.
derbycitymartialarts.com/
Our intention with this video is not to mock Dale Brown or those who train with the Detroit Threat Management Center. But rather offer commentary and suggestions for improving his techniques and training methods by highlighting the crossover between effective combat sports training and effective self defense.
With such a large following, D.U.S.T. has tremendous capacity to put self-defense information in front of the eyes of hopeful viewers. It is my hope that through critiques like this, they can improve the quality of that information in the future.

I pretty much died when Chewy demonstrated the first technique, couldn't get out, then escaped using a wet willie. It actually took me 4 tries to type this because just describing it got me laughing again. Also Ramsay, I think you picked the perfect partner for the video. Xaio (feel free to correct me if I got the spelling wrong) has the perfect directness to balance you as the straight man. This was 36 minutes of comedic gold, aside from, of course, providing some useful critiques of less-than-sound self defense techniques.

After watching this I immediately went over to my 8-year old daughter who, despite being tough, has no experience of self defence (for the streets!) except a few months of karate. I told her I'm going to use techniques that cause you to fall, but try to resist them like you would normally. Push to the side of the throat -> she turns a bit and the push does nothing Push to the tracheal notch -> she turns a bit and punches me, annoyed at the poking Finger to the nose -> she turns her head and laughs at my attempt Finger to the lower jaw -> she tucks her jaw in and nothing happens. I get punched again. Scientific conclusions: an untrained 8-year old doesn't fall on her behind, instead punches me as I try these futile techniques. My survival was not increased. I must get out there and train.

ramsey is very clever, but he is not pointing that when he tryied the technique against resistance he had his friend in a positin very disadvantage to him, when grabbing his leg, so he would have hit him very hard on the head or grabbed him in the face or whatever, so the technique really didnt worked cause as in any technique the oponent could have resisted it, but he had in a possition that was better for him, and he didnt accounted for that. and it happen like other time, too. he just says the technique does not work, but does not mention he could have followed with something else when he had the opponent out of balance

I'm not even halfway through and I'm compelled to say this has made my day. Edit: I actually practice a lot of Tekken moves with my sisters at my Gym (It's a gymnastics gym and not an MMA gym) on a Friday night and I can 100% confidently say that the moves performed by Sergei Dragunov (The Commando Sambo captain) and 'King' the Pro Wrestler fashioned after the legendary Tiger Mask of Japanese Pro Wrestling fame.... they actually work... AND THEY HURT. I daresay some are higher percentage techniques than a Rolling Berimbolo or something. Also I've followed Chewjitsu for ages. When I was doing Jujitsu years ago, that was one of my go-to channels for advice :D

@AveSicarius
@AveSicarius 2 жыл бұрын
I mean as long as the techniques aren't reliant upon mystical power's or unrealistic air time you can definitely pull them off. You can make basically anything somewhat feasible work if you are good enough. For example many kicks in fighting games aren't seen in MMA (etc) because they are difficult to pull off (i.e. you need to be really good at kicking) and might leave you open to a takedown or counter unless you time them very well. If you can land one it could definitely hurt, axe kicks are common in fighting games, uncommon outside of kickboxing, but can shatter your collarbone or KO if they land flush (which is what Andy Hug always tried to do). I've known a fair few people who used martial arts movies and fighting games for inspiration. DJ does this quite a bit, and even admits to it, he's even pulled off a Zangief throw before... The problem with the Tekken grabs is they usually rely on the opponent standing still and letting you do your choreography on them haha.

Absolutely right. You can make pretty much anything work (aside from bs, fantasy "techniques", of course) if you put in enough work to condition your body and develop the skills. Just making a strawman and putting them up to beat up in public is not very honest IMO.

im so pumped for this episode edit: It's really helpful and important, beyond comedic value, for these sorts of debunking videos to be popular. On a macroscopic level, the public becomes more aware as a whole about compliance-based self-defense exercises and techniques that only grows false-confidence while taking time/resources away from training that could be helpful and potentially save lives. Not every martial arts practitioner will have fighting as their top priority, but everybody should have some understanding of realistic combat/self-defense. The more aware the public becomes of discerning good training from junk training, the better off the martial arts and combat sports community can be. Thanks for raising the bar as usual coach!
@AveSicarius
@AveSicarius 2 жыл бұрын
All you need to effectively defend yourself is an awareness of your surroundings and a good grasp of basic fighting skills (i.e. a basic competency in grappling and striking such that you can defend yourself). If you have a good grasp of the basics, you can defend yourself even against a larger or more skilled opponent, you might not win, but you can at least have a chance of holding out until you can escape. This is the issue with self-defence as a whole though, most self-defence instructors I've seen are bunk martial artists who can't actually fight, how are they going to teach you to defend yourself if they don't teach you how to fight? It's like the recent DK Yoo debacle, he made so many beginner mistakes during that fight, so how many of his students are going to be capable of defending themselves in a similar situation. DK wouldn't have been able to defend himself against a large untrained opponent in a real fight, let alone someone with some training in MMA. This is DANGEROUS, it could get people killed, and I see so much false confidence in general within the martial arts community that unfortunately passes onto the public as well. The people I've known who actually did somewhat ok in self-defence scenarios all did a form of martial arts where they had resisting opponents. A friend of mine did Judo and some Karate/kickboxing (and did Aikido later for fun, though he didn't get much out of it haha) and was attacked by two guy's while using an ATM, he wasn't the best fighter, but he managed to defend himself a little (he was still pretty beat up obviously) and put throw one guy face first into the concrete (who ended up hospitalized I believe) and chase the other one off. He was injured (they also sucker punched him from behind so that didn't help), but he managed to protect himself (though his striking wasn't the best which is probably why his face was a bit busted up) and go on the offensive with some success. Because he'd practiced throws on resisting opponents, he could perform it in an actual fight. Any martial art where you practice against resisting opponents will be somewhat effective, it might not be optimal or the best, but it will work. Even if you don't have fighting as a priority, if you understand the basics and have used them against a resisting opponent, you can at least defend yourself. If my friend had trained this bogus self-defence he could have been seriously injured, or even killed (all it takes is hitting your head on the concrete). Honestly this topic makes me angry, these charlatans are dangerous, they could easily get people killed (just like "martial artists" teaching insane techniques and claiming they are effective to students), and the best way I can think of to solve this is legal regulation. The fact that snake oil salesmen are everywhere and going unchallenged in every industry really says something about the state of our legal systems.

The pinch technique was so beyond ridiculous. Keep in mind that a lot of murderers are caught from their DNA under their victim nails. If clawing someone's flesh w your nails doesn't save you, wtf is a pinch gonna do?
@johnnylan7474
@johnnylan7474 Жыл бұрын
@@jugo1944 don't ridicule a pinch. I have actual pinch techniques that really work. The trouble is no one executes them properly. Including ourvfriend coach ramsey here. He understands where the nerve bundles are, but he is notvteained or experienced in pinching. Which is perfectly fine. It doesn't make him an ineffective fighter. It make him him. Me, i like my pinch techniques, they do what i need in a fast and effective way. And just because someone doesn't want to believe it doesn't make my experience with it fake. I have watched my own father step back and his armsfold like chicken wings twice because of my pinching. Granted, it only works in crtain situations, but knowing different techniques to cover many situations is the concept of training in your chosen artform. So please. Instead of automatically dismissing an artform, do some research and study and test for yourself. I in fact can share a few bit of my own technique. Wrist. Press your thumb into the underside of your forearm about two inches away from your wrist. Th forearm has two bones. The idea is to press hard in between them close to the hand. If done properly, you will not be able to make a fist. Basically, if someobe geabs you by the collar, you pinch them there and suddenly their hands are like jello and you easily broken their grip. Defence, not fighting, but defence. Most people when faced with someone with even a small amount of skill start thinking twice about who should be messed and who should be left alone. Street thugs which are dime a dozen are mere bullies, afraid more than you are. No one faces real threats except soldiers in avhot zone.

I lost it at the Jordan Peterson bit. Also, this kind of shit works in demonstrations and in light sparring, when both people are kinda relaxed. If you ever grappled for at least a couple of days, if you did even aikido or goju-ryu style sticky palms stuff, then you know that positioning yourself to even initiate a proper hold is THE hardest part of wrestling. The demonstration is starting when the hold is already there, therefore you already fucked up. Because even if the opponent is a white belt, once he gets a hold in, the only thing that will force him to let go is either a bladed weapon or some real agony, like tearing his balls clean off. It's basically a wrestler's equivalent of making counters for a hook to the head, but they all start from the point where the fully accelerated fist is already an inch away from your chin.

Hilarious as always. One thing though, when you do the resistance segments, can you also have the "defender" try with maximum effort? I want to see if the techniques lead to any success when you use their concepts and push relentlessly to try and achieve the result. I am mainly referring to all the ones involving manipulation of the face/head. As if you CAN SUCCESSFULLY tip someone's head, we know from jiujitsu, we can take them down (where the head goes, the body will follow)

With all due respect, not having studied a martial art doesn't make you a wimp, so I'm not sure why you assumed I felt as such. You can be a tough guy and not have a sense of your equilibrium to really know when you are in a compromised position, for example. That being said, I do agree that these self defense videos are BS for a bunch of other reasons (lack of resistance training being a big one). However, even experienced grapplers have issues defending against these grabs against a resisting opponent. It doesn't invalidate their art, it just shows how different a classroom lesson differs from real life.

The step back and flip works, (I've used it in an actual street fight long ago) but you have to move immediately, your opponent has to not expect it, it has to be automatic, and it has to have a follow up. If you have to think about stop and ANYTHING in a fight, you're screwed. If they get your feet off the ground, you're screwed. If there's more than one, you're screwed unless you're really damn good, and I'm not good enough to fight more than one guy, maybe not even one guy anymore. Situation: I was in a scuffle with another guy. Other guy is losing. His buddy tries bear hugging me to give the other guy free shots. Step back, hip throw, and I'm free. BUT, it was also followed by a hard kick to the jewels while he was down. Otherwise, he's getting back up and now I'm fighting 2 guys. Not a good scenario.

I have used this throw when grabbed from behind. It was a real situation and not likely that the person had grappling. I also did it in a judo style with much much more explosive force. I have trained it. The person has to grab you hard and not be aware enough to just let go and drop you. I kicked both my feet violently at the person in front of me. If the person let's go right now you'll fall and have to scramble on the ground. Without putting my feet down I swing around behind abs to the side of them. I get that leg deep behind them, like behind both of their legs like food judo. I hit a very deep squat and I just straighten one arm across their chest and stand. They go flying. I do believe this is a real judo technique. I got it from IU judo club. For me it works but the truth is I'm not trying to throw. I'm trying to kick the mother fucker in front of me hard enough to get a split second of space then I'm trying to take the back of the guy grabbing. They tend to go flying when my legs get behind them.

I think it's called a sequi nage! I've done it in Japanese Ju Jitsu and in tai chi. The tai chi style one was more common because is it was common for people to grind in to the pocket sideways, if your foot ends up on the outside, that's the throw available to you

@@TheDevourerOfPancakeSorry, Deven Laratt and JF Cerone talk about pancakes often. At any rate I think one of the reasons this works for me is I keep it tight and my arm pit touches them. I don't think the power comes from the elbow I think it's because the attachment points for the lat and rotor cuff are pushing on them and those parts of the upper arm have torque. The hand has horsepower but stalls under load. I'm not entirely sure how much I stand up cause my thigh is the pivot they fall over. People hit hard on this one. I recommend a crash pad.

A few nit picky things about the video that I don't really think change the over all assessment unless under specific circumstances but problems I found in the analysis overall. 1. The face grab technique could potentially work due to the leverage you would have similar to how a muay thai clinch does where you control the body via the head. But the problem is, it requires the opponent to not have much understanding of combat, and requires a large reach in order to get the position on the face secure enough to take control. An even then there are still plenty of ways the opponent can maneuver due to the lack of full control. 2. With the leg sweep thing by standing up. It appeared like he placed his foot directly behind the most distant foot of his attacker giving him no room to move back while simultaneously using the arm as he stands up to push the top half of the body off balance. Where you left a pretty sizeable gap for your training partner there to keep his balance. I could see this working, but would require again someone who lacks knowledge in combat, as well as you to both be tall enough to loop the leg and strong enough to get the leverage and overcome their initial upper body strength to set them off balance, which makes it a poor self defense situation as attackers usually pick weaker/smaller people to prey on. -Side note, another issue with your video would be (I assume ) everyone you all used are experienced in grappling to some degree. Which gives them a lot more knowledge on how to react/counter than the typical criminal. But the flaws in the officers video are blatant enough regardless of this. The rest of it seemed incredibly dumb and dangerous though. An even the above are far from guaranteed to work even with the above variables in your favor and with much better methods you could use which are both more effective when they work, more likely to work, and less dangerous to you. Over all great video as always.

Interesting. Amazed that you guys took it seriously and tested it out (for what it was worth), to show how much it failed. But I ended up with a few question: -If an assailant is coming in to beat you up from the behind, why wouldn't they just punch, kick, or stab you? It feels like grappling them like are extra steps if you have the upper hand/surprise... -Is Detroit Urban Survival Training the same guys that provide private security in Detroit? If so... shouldn't that experience on its own teach them that none of that would work? -Also, in the context of the U.S, I imagine private security or police are 9 times out of 10 walking around armed. Like how likely is it that someone is going to assault a police officer unarmed, them time to try weird superman shenanigans? The more I think about it, the more perplexing this all is...

But i fell in love with Kungfu after moving to the US and practiced it without ever getting into a fight. But quite a few years ago i watched a couple of guys in cage fighting when it first started to come out. Well when i was watching this cage fighting and this was when the gracie brothers showed up in these fights i saw two fights that completely broke my heart about my beloved kung fu, but renovated my belief in jujitso. So the first one was a 6 degree black belt from Japan. And then they showed the guy doing his kata and was very impressive. Well when they got into the cage within a minute or two the black belt had his arm in a lock and had to tap out, in fact his shoulder got dislocated.. The second guy against the Gracie brothers, i do not remember who, it has been almost twenty years. But this time was kung fu guy and in the preview the guys was doing some fantastic flips and jumps. Well again when he came to the cage again within a couple of minutes the guy was on a lock and had to tap out.

I want this dynamic applied to other aspects of training! Also, has anyone noticed that Dale must be skipping leg day? My legs don't like to grow either, but compared to his arms... that is *stark*. He was genetically gifted with a large head though. It is, genuinely, harder to knock a man out who has a bigger noggin-- and Dale... He has some substantial cranial mass. I keep hoping we see Dale publish a, vulnerable, personal, honest series about his rise and fall on social media. Also, about his remorse for his foolishness, hubris, and especially all the people he mislead (Let's hope unintentionally.),and the hard work and training he puts in to catch up to the present moment in martial arts -- late in life as it may be for him. He could share his perspective about how he was misguided, and what he is learning from real martial arts... If he can be humble and charming, I'd subscribe
