Thank you so much for this video. The information provided has been very informative and a learning experience for me. I am in the process of preparing myself to study for my captains license. It’s been a journey to accomplish this unfortunately it’s been a challenge for me due that I’m starting from scratch no boat for sea hours or any courses just gathering all the materials and books to study. Thank you for this priceless information and whoever the instructor is in this video kudos to him great job.👍👍

The video incorrectly states the set as 229, however, if you look at the compass rose and the correct responses, I believe he measures 329. I have done this problem multiple times and come up with between 326 and 329. This is also consistent with the answers provided.

Great video!!! Might I correct; diff betn 229 n 332 is well over 100deg n not 3 deg as stated by u. Secondly while reading the set u read 229 from the NW direction, if it were 229 then it wld hav been in SW direction.

That part in the video just extremely confused me as well. Maybe this practice problem video could be edited to correct "229" and mention "329"

I think he mis-noted the set as 229, however if you look closely, the compass rose actually showed 329… I think he had it right in his head, but not on the whiteboard. So his 332° is actually only 3° off.

Reason for 229 vs ~239 He read the compass wrong... for some reason he said 229, but it was really more like 329 if you look close.

How are you getting the longitude using just a parellel ruler. How are you sure that your line is exactly straight vertical?

I line the parallel rules up with the meridians which run north and south. If you watch carefully I am using both the parallel rules and dividers to get a position.

Think about it in terms of common sense or mental math approximation. If you have 45 minutes and you are trying to get how many hours that is, you know that it is .75 hours and not 2,700 hours. You can always get a good estimation of what it should be using metal math. Use that to your advantage.

229 was a wrong reading. If you look closely at 9:45 into the video the correct reading is 329. 229 would have been more than 100 degrees off. He should have caught the error at the end when all the correct answers were 100 + degrees off.

I think you miss read the compass rose when you said it was reading was 229*. That is a physiologic impossibility that far north. The video makes sense if he reading was 329* true then you would be only 3* off and the video makes sense that way.

Aviation has already quit using paper charts, they don’t even carry enough crew to use them and fly at the same time anymore. How long before maritime quits this crap. 2 chart plotters and a handheld backup, along with a GPS Signal transmitter will be just fine til the EMP hits

Well, when your power goes out what happens to you in the air? When your power goes out on a boat you have charts and entire system of measurement and calculation to sort out where you are and where to go without the electronics. It has saved many a life at sea- Aviation still has problems with flyers who can't function without electronics and what goes up must come down. Safe flying.

Wow. You're ok with squinting so hard that 229 degrees approximates 332 degrees (on a 360 degree wheel) but you somehow think you need 2 decimal places of accuracy (which isn't warranted by your measurements) in your distance calculations (or 1 of them, anyway). It's possible that you know a lot more about boating than I do, but you know nothing about mathematics. Or taking tests. Getting an answer that isn't close to any of the options should have given you reason to try again. The scary thing is; you got the right answer by accident and think you know your stuff.
