Based on a true story, the film focuses on the Alabama’s commanding officer, Captain Richard Phillips (two-time Academy Award®-winner Tom Hanks, Best Actor, 1993, Philadelphia; Best Actor, 1994, Forrest Gump), and the Somali pirate captain, Muse (Barkhad Abdi), who takes him hostage. The two men are set on an unstoppable collision course when Muse and his crew target Phillips’ unarmed ship; in the ensuing standoff, both men will find themselves at the mercy of forces beyond their control.

The only thing they're fishing out there is that big boat that looks like 110 million something dollars. Had it been armed with even one machine gun this would have been a very different story. I think some companies now employ armed guards in light of this event. Locking gates, using hoses and sonic devices has proved useless. You're dealing with desperate hungry men from one of the most impoverished corners of the globe.

+TraustiGeir The ship really isn't that slow by cargo standards. It can achieve 20+ knots which is quite remarkable considering cargo ships aren't built for speed at all.
@TraustiGeir

CoDWiiPS3Gameplay That is actually quite true. But, with no fixed point to compare with it's motion, the real speed can go unnoticed.

TraustiGeir Ah I see what you mean. Yes, the cinematics make it seem like such an exciting chase for a rather slow ship though.
@SportSoulLife
@SportSoulLife 7 жыл бұрын
TraustiGeir Indeed. Ships often sail at 20 knots, which is faster than many outboard engined boats do. They move about 10 meters forward every second, which is a lot for a ~70.000 metric tonnes vessel. Ships navigating through arpicelagos might look very slow too, or barely moving at all, but in reality they often sail at higher speeds than freetime boaters in 30 foot targas dare to sail in the very same fairway.

I love how the captain slowly raises the rpms, giving the engine room time to make any adjustments. Many (older) commercial vessels are set up to run at optimal rpms for the best fuel economy and low engine stress levels. They even used different fuels depending on location. In ports, where you had to play around with the rpms and go between ahead and astern, ships would run on diesel. Out in the open sea, where you go constant rpms for most of the journey, the ship would run on crude oil (as it's cheaper). And you can't just gun it! At least that's how older Bulgarian (Soviet bloc) ships built in the 70s and 80s were. Mechanics had to tune and set up the engine for new orders. Tho I am sure that newer ships respond faster and a lot more is automated. My dad was a captain in the 80s and early 90s and I've actually been on the ship he captained (captained by a friend of his up until it was scrapped in 2009) and I had the chance to travel between two ports. Even got the chance to take the ship off auto pilot and hold the course. I was driving a 40000 ton bulk carrier. I was even allowed to take it up to 16kts for a while. Ain't no better way to spend the weekend for a 16 year old who loves all vehicles. You don't really feel the speed like you do in a car, you don't get pinned into your seat when it accelerates, but when you know how much power is needed to get all of that metal moving, the feeling is incredible. You just take a glance at the massive wake you're making and you know you're not playing around.

Troy Baker it's true in the long run peace is better, and steps should be taken to that end. In the meantime, they should be allowed to defend themselves. Great part of the movie, each 'captain' eyeing each other through the binoculars..... BTW: UKMTO often gives that advice (fishermen also carry AK47s in this area) but UKMTO also always alerts all warships in the area, regardless of nationality - as they did on this occasion (as she said). Its then up to each warship commander to decide whether to respond or not - its not up to UKMTO which simply provides voluntary liaison between merchant ships and Naval forces in the Middle East.

I had a hard time with this movie because losing control of a vessel to piracy is so preventable. The refusal of the Cargo companies to prevent it is ridiculous. Armed guards will prevent pirates from taking control of these vessels. Period. And yet, they go to great lengths to avoid anyone being armed. So the pirates hear this, the pirates know this, and it just invites attack. You can hang big water cannons on the side of a ship and lock gates over stairwells but that's not going to deter them (as he have seen).

I know some people lack the superficial part of the brain and that is to pay attention to detail. The captain clearly asked for air support. The first clue should have been when he repeated "air support immediately." The second was when he said "arrival time 5 minutes" now im not an engineer but I know warships cannot travel 800 nautical miles in 5 minutes. (Because that was how far the nearest warship was) I know ignorance is an issue but sir you crack me up

Bryce Leung Id really suggest that you see the movie "A hijacking". A danish made movie which has a lot of english in it and for the other parts you can put subtitles on. They tell how a piracy situation REALLY is, and the whole movie is something completely else compared to any hollywood movie, which makes it more relatable and unpredictable. No over the top shooting, explosions, fast overdone action scenes and so on. I rate it well above captain philips, both because the movie in my opinion is better and because it is more realistic, it tells the real story of piracy and how life is for us sailors.

clayhart33 Won’t even knock the tracks off. It’s called an anti material rifle for a reason not a anti tank rifle. There are “rifles” specifically designed to penetrate tank armor though, the .50 is just not one of them.

4:01 I don't know if that was actually intentional or not, but Hanks was tripping over his tongue here, wanting to say 'Ah, wanna bring it up to one twenty five' but instead kinda slipping and saying 'Ah wanna bring it up to a hun....one twenty five'. Intentional or not, it just really adds tension to show how stressed Captain Phillips is at that point already and how panic sets in. If it was intentional, really good thinking to show the tension in the scene, if it wasn't, really good that this little slip of words remained in the final cut.

You wanna know why these people continue to hijack these ships, because they look at them as easy targets, like a shooter, they will look for targets that do not have any means to defend themselves or look like easy pickins, that way it is easier for them to succeed in their mission, easy way to fix this, have armed guards patrolling the ship, not only will that give these massive cargo ships a means to actually defend themselves, but additionally it might make some of these pirates less likely to attack these ships when they see that these ships have armed guards on board with rifles and machine guns.

4 guys, with medium level experience shooting fully automatic high power rifle. 2 Port side, 2 Starboard side. wait till skiff get along side boat, hook ladder and start climbing up. 1 guy supressing fire onto skiff, 1 guy picks off pirates as they climb up ladder. Deck is an elevated shooting position, which is always tactically superior. that's how I'd do it.
