I don't see these plugins that way. If you pick up a guitar and are just strumming away trying to come up with something. You tend to fall into familiar patterns that you play well. If there is another musician there. They might join in and play something you wouldn't have thought of. Hearing what they played, might spark you to come up with something inspired by what they played, that you wouldn't have thought of on your own. That's what you do anyway. You might like the first part of what you played but not the second, so sit trying to find something better. No you are not playing an instrument, you are more an arranger or assembler of musical phrases when you use these programs on their own. They do help inspire your own ideas though. I have a drum program called Jamstix 4 (which does have a free version people can try if they want) and it is based on what are called drummer models. So you can have a drum track played according to the style of a drummer called Charlie a drummer called Star or a drummer call Phil etc, so they are not the same as static midi grooves. I used to program drums by hand from a keyboard. (I didn't have the money or room for a real drum kit anyway). I would then edit them in a midi editor. I still do some of that with the drums Jamstix comes up with but these programs just help to take some of the monotonous repetitive tasks out of making music and they are a way to play with better musicians than yourself. You still need talent to make these things play something people will want to listen to. Even if you are only a hobbyist making music for your own amusement, they make it much more enjoyable. They will never take the place of watching actual skilled musicians playing their instruments in front of an audience. They are just tools that help make music making accessible to everyone. In the old days, all we had were 4 track tape recorders. That's 4 mono tracks. If you wanted any more, you would have to bounce them down and you couldn't undo it. What you can do in Reaper was an unimaginable dream and the province of multi million pounds studios. Now everyone can have that sort of technology in a box in their bedroom?

Tech in art seeks to eliminate the skill floor and leave only decisions to be made by the actual musicians. It can broaden your horizon (and let you suffer more by studying it). Think of it as a sorted array of references. I'd actually buy these just to study what the creators thought to be typical solutions for chords/melodies/bass. Nothing will eliminate the blockiness and boredom of a piece that is composed without knowledge or taste. So you can just check this plugin out, study its built in patterns, insuring your brain has absorbed those, and keep on doing cool stuff.

@@genuinefreewilly5706 we can saw the same thing for every new musical instrument that has been created in life....at a time it was musically to make music without synths....the guitar and keyboard players then would have said the synth take the passion away from making music...at the end its the music we wanna hear....except if the making of the music is more important to you than the actual music.....

Hey man, best advice I can give you is just do it. Make something. Make something awful. Don't stop yourself. Don't let yourself judge the work in the moment, just make it. You have to write shitty songs to write good songs, and you have to stay out of your own head enough to write any song. One exercise I'd highly recommend is: Try and write the WORST piece of music you can in whatever style you enjoy. Often times you'll find you actually like what you come up with. Either way, you'll have written something, and that's awesome! Don't get hung up on the details, when you're frustrated just step away, use the bathroom, grab some tea, sit back down, and don't let that discourage you. Songs don't just happen, they're hard work. Good songwriters don't just sit down and shit gold, and most song-writers are working with other people, rarely is any song written by a single person. Just keep that perspective and don't let yourself believe that this is something that's easy for everyone but you; it's not. I'm proud of you for trying. I hope you stick to it, and feel free to link me music when you make it, I'd love to hear it.

@@TrollingMyLawn Hey dude thanks so much for your reply! First and foremost you can check out my current channel where I have a single of mine released :) I am a studio owner and work with some artists on songs and even lay the final touches on my bands first album. The problem really is more the anxiety of releasing something bad. When one of my bandmates writes something for example. I can really focus on that and make it great as the idea itself was not written by myself. It feels more like helping and less like creating which seems to be my comfort zone. Writing something completely myself/my idea is quite hard so thank you for your words and I´ll try to just write something/force myself. This tool for example really seems like a game changer for me for the last 15 minutes i´ve tried it. unfortunately to fit this in a rock/metal context seems a bit hard at first but I guess I will start just writing some songs with it as a starter. :) Thanks so much for your inspiring words however! :)
@TrollingMyLawn2 жыл бұрын
@@Worgram I do the same thing. Other people's work? Easy. Mine? Fuck no. One thing I try to do sometimes is before I start writing a song or sitting down to work on something I've recorded I'll write a brief, just like I'd expect from my clients. "This is where I want to go, I want it to sound like xyz tracks, the snare needs to slap and the vocals need to be super smooth." Then with that idea i'll refer back to it and go "Ah, ok, my 'client' wants to go pretty punchy with the snare. I've got a few ideas, but I'll start with this one." Then write that element / mix that part, 'turn it in' to yourself, write yourself another prompt. Repeat. As far as the anxiety of releasing something bad goes, I have the same issue. My singing voice is... Brian Sella's is better. But that's actually inspired me. If people like Brian Sella are making amazing music and they aren't near the world's best singer, and I'm sitting here thinking "Wow, thank god he's released this and didn't let his voice stop him because this is amazing music," then why can't I do that for myself? I don't know I'll figure that out one day I hope. I'm gonna go check out that single of yours while I download all of BLueLab's plugins since they're free and going out of business :/

I bought these plugins after watching your video but I find that there are some features lacking that limits the usability for me. It is limited to 4/4 time. I can't find out how to tell it that I am modulating to a different key or changing time signatures in the middle of a song. This makes it difficult to accommodate some lyrics. If I could write the melody separately and then bring it into Captain Chords to harmonize by importing or copying in midi, that would help a lot. But the assumed workflow seems to be that you start with the chords and go from there and that you work with small units of music that loop and repeat. I start with the lyrics, on which I build the melody and then add chords and do the instrumental arrangement afterwards. These plugins have enormous potential if you can work within their limitations.
