THIS VIDEO IS A RECONSTRUCTION OF THE FOLLOWING SITUATION IN FLIGHT:
21-FEB-2024. A Southwest Airlines Boeing 737-800 (B738), registration N8568Z, performing flight SWA3010 / WN3010 from Santa Barbara Municipal Airport, CA (USA) to Denver International Airport, CO (USA) was cleared for take-off from runway 25 at Santa Barbara Airport when the captain called Tower controller and said that it was his last flight as an airline pilot. After the takeoff the flight crew reported bird strike and the airplane returned safely to Santa Barbara Airport.

00:17 Takeoff clearance. Captain contacts Tower:” This is my last flight”

_______________
THE VALUE OF THIS VIDEO:
THE MAIN VALUE IS EDUCATION. This reconstruction will be useful for actual or future air traffic controllers and pilots, people who plan to connect life with aviation, who like aviation. With help of this video reconstruction you’ll learn how to use radiotelephony rules, Aviation English language and general English language (for people whose native language is not English) in situation in flight, which was shown. THE MAIN REASON I DO THIS IS TO HELP PEOPLE TO UNDERSTAND EVERY EMERGENCY SITUATION, EVERY WORD AND EVERY MOVE OF AIRCRAFT.
SOURCES OF MATERIAL, LICENSES AND PERMISSIONS:
Source of communications - www.liveatc.net/ (I have a permission (Letter) for commercial use of radio communications from LiveATC.net).
Map, aerial pictures (License (ODbL) ©OpenStreetMap -www.openstreetmap.org/copyrig...) Permission for commercial use, royalty-free use.
Radar screen (In new versions of videos) - Made by author.
Text version of communication - Made by Author.
Video editing - Made by author.
HOW I DO VIDEOS:
1) I monitor media, airspace, looking for any non-standard, emergency and interesting situation.
2) I find communications of ATC unit for the period of time I need.
3) I take only phrases between air traffic controller and selected flight.
4) I find a flight path of selected aircraft.
5) I make an animation (early couple of videos don’t have animation) of flight path and aircraft, where the aircraft goes on his route.
6) When I edit video I put phrases of communications to specific points in video (in tandem with animation).
7) Together with my comments (voice and text) I edit and make a reconstruction of emergency, non-standard and interesting situation in flight.

Those birds decided to join the party.... LOL Jokes apart - The frustration in the Captain's voice is very noticeable... After 39 years of flying, having his last flight interrupted is sad... I hope SWA gave him one more flight to effectively retire!

Mostly unrelated, but a tiny bit related. I had to sue my auto insurer when they denied a claim & said water damage was due to a lack of maintenance and normal wear and tear. I wrote out a statement for the service advisor to sign and be used in small claims court. I wasn't sure if he would sign a legal document, as w/my company, that would first have to be approved by legal. He signed it, I won, and I subsequently found out that he retired days later. So when you are retiring, I suppose you do what you want to.

After what the captain mentioned during takeoff, of him starting his career in Santa Barbara, it's pretty cool that his last flight he'll put in his log book is: From: (KSBA) Santa Barbara To: (KSBA) Santa Barbara Obviously nobody wants to experience a bird strike, but this is one hell of a story for this pilot's last flight. To and From the airport where it all started, and an Emergency landing.

A few years ago, I was on a WN pilot's last flight. He did the whole announcement to everyone, etc. Then, I guess the first officer finished his inspection. They found a problem. Flight cancelled. He seemed bummed. I spoke to him after and apparently this was his last revenue flight, but I guess southwest let him do some non-rev flight later as his true last flight.

Why ,as long as he had 2 good engines and the aircraft showed no sign of anything wrong there is no reason to rush anything. You have a situation that is potentially unsafe but you don't know how unsafe. Maintenance really needs the aircraft at your destination airport rather than return to the departure airport. Flight Ops is telling you that's good for them because it gets the passengers where they're going anyways. What do you do?

So many idiots posting on here that have no idea what airline culture is like now for good reason. If the airplane is controllable and powered there is no need to rush a decision like your John Wayne. The only time you need to rush is if you are on fire. He did exactly what he was supposed to do. Slow down, involve maintenance and the other crew member , run checklist and access the situation before making a decision . Sorry ,if you want to be John Wayne try crop dusting not the Airlines.
