Growing up near an Air Force Base in New Mexico, Captain Tammie Jo Shults knew two things from an early age: She wanted to serve her country, and she wanted to fly. Through her service with the Navy, she was able to be among the first group of women that were flying tactical aircraft in the military."I kept going when there was no applause to keep going."
She met her husband while she was an instructor, and today, more than 30 years later, they are both Pilots for Southwest Airlines.
As Captain of Flight 1380 last year, Tammie Jo said she learned a lot about herself. Above everything, she learned the importance of hope. It was hope, to be in the sky someday, that inspired her to pursue a career in aviation, and it is hope that keeps her going today. #InternationalWomensDay

Captain Shults, you are more than a hero to me and I hope that others feel the same way. Being a female Captain only proves that you can do something that no one else expects you to do. Flight crew members speak highly of you. Your bravery and calmness is something everyone should aspire to have. Level headed and not panicking saved your crippled jet. I will not discuss the outcome so as not to cause you to relive those moments. I would love to meet you one day, just to talk about the power of women. Together, we can make this world a much better place. Thank you for making this video, you definitely deserve the credit for being honored on International Womens Day.

Thank you for all of your service Tammie Jo. I'm sure you will inspire many more female aviators to follow in your footsteps, as well as all women to pursue their dreams. I myself come from a family of aviators and one of my two airline pilot siblings is a female Captain.

She's my hero. Me and my mom were on SWA Flight 1380 going to visit family. When I heard the loud bang I gave off a little shriek and I literally got down into the brace position. My mom pulled me back up and we both put on our oxygen masks and tryed to stay calm. The second we hit the runway at Philadelphia I along with everyone else clapped. We had just survived that day. God bless you & your mom & all the passengers and crew of flight 1380! I can imagine all you wanted to do was hug the pilots !!!!!!! And kiss the ground !!!!!!!! Captain Shults seems like an incredibly classy lady and we know she's an amazing pilot ! God bless her!
