I do love that the "tutorial" level doesn't make you do things any certain way. Case in point: I climbed the Temple of Time the hard way, up the front while trying not to fall off the tiny ledge, instead of going around and finding out *there was a goddamn ladder*

I remember playing it the whole summer. Now, i can't even count how often I've played this game. I imagine the actual reason they stopped making manuals was to increase profits. A little book across millions of copies adds up money wise. Same reason some boxed games are just coming with a sleeve of paper instead of an actual disk.
@GraniteFaun

Also games become distributed digitally way more often, they can deploy the manual via a file. Or theres KZbin now anyways.
@cometvaudin2850
@cometvaudin2850 2 жыл бұрын
Of course paying to produce millions of books sounds like a lot, but when you keep in mind they’re also paying to produce millions of consoles and discs and cartridges at the same time, the relative cost wouldn’t have been too substantial. I think it’s because videogames can now be bought digitally and wouldn’t be able to come with a manual.

13:48 This is why I like more simplistic games. If I've got to spend hours in menus reading stuff to figure out how the hell to play it, I'm probably gonna get bored unless it's a really interesting game. I still haven't finished my playthrough of the Witcher 3 because of all the menu navigation and reading you've got to do to figure out enemy weaknesses and how/what to craft. It really goes a long way in building immersion when the game takes a "show don't tell" approach to teaching you mechanics.
@aaronl19
@aaronl19 2 жыл бұрын
The true beauty of BoTW is that the devs want you to figure out how to do things by yourself, they help guide you to the way your supposed to do it. The thing is, different people may come to different conclusions on what to do, _and the game doesn’t punish you for it._ If you try to get to Goron City without fireproof elixirs there’s nobody kicking at your door and ripping the switch out of your hands, if you want to eat food when your about to die _you can_

This hit me when I was trying to climb my way in zora's domain (where you have to fight a bunch of enemies to get to the top) I was really bad at combat and kept dying so my brain went "There's no way the game would let me sneak around all the way". so I tried it, and it worked. Didn't have to fight a single monster! I think that's when I really felt how in control the player is in botw. It's a kind of freedom I hadn't really experienced in video games before.

I went in totally blind on Zelda, Switch and without having played a videogame in years. So: even before reaching the old man I was distracted by a boar and chased him down, and that's how I got my first hit. Then I got lost because my sense of orientation is non existent. Then I managed to get to the tower and did my first shrine and I was hyped, but at the same time I started to believe that everything shiny was good. So I went to the bomb shine and I saw that one of these rocks that are all around Hyrule started to shine. I got a little suspicious when I realized that the music had changed and that, well, there was a laser, but when I figured it was actually the case to run it was too late...it was traumatic.

I think the fire emblem games for the gba have an interesting approach to tutorials because they give you information through the houses in the early game, but it kinda suck because you have to waste a turn, that's why they put some units in range to end their turn exactly on a house so it doesn't feel like you're wasting your turn

Bayonetta also does a great job at explaining how to play: Loading screens are a training room for the player to try out combos, the combat system is explained in these rooms with respawning enemies. On top of that, the game instructions are displayed and ones you do it correctly, Rodin says "BEAUTIFUL!". This also applies to new techniques in the game. Also, the beginning of the game already lets you play but doesn't use a life bar and just throws you in to experiment without the chance of failing. After that, the first level also doesn't have a life bar and so you just had your mechanics explained, now you can try them out again without risk of failure. Since the combos are displayed in the training room and button mashing can unlock long combos, it is very friendly for experimentation and finding your own play style. The last great feature are Alfheim/Muspelheim which are optional challenges with certain conditions such as a time limit, lava floor, one disabled mechanic, using only one continuous combo, etc. They can be replayed as much as needed to get special prizes without any negative consequence when messing up the challenge.

I think what I like most about BoTW's turorial is that it perfectly encapsules how the game is going to play out. It tells you the basic controls, then leaves you to arse around and find out everything else yourself, with pointers and hints at what you *should* be doing for people who are completely stumped. It emphasises the open-endedness, even when introducing the Sheikah Slate and your runes, giving you time in between each new rune to mess around with what you've got after the shrine gave you the basic lowdown. And getting to each shrine teaches you about climbing, surviving extreme temperatures, getting across gaps and rivers, all sorts, while not specifically telling you exactly how to do it. Especially temperature: whether it's through clothing, cooking or more out of the box methods such as holding lit torches or weapons, i love how it does all that without explicitly telling you what to do. Also i love the couple of Blue Bokoblins that can handily oneshot you. It just goes and says to the player "yo dumbass, you can't bum-rush everything with impunity, you're going to have to be smarter here". And thus teaches you to find ways of overcoming threats you'd have issues going toe-to-toe with, whether it's swiping their weapons while they're not looking and aren't carrying them or burning them up to weaken their attacks, using environmental hazards like the bombs in that one camp to whittle them down or kill them outright, or just plain avoiding them. Really helps set the tone, and REALLY adds to the satisfaction when you can just bum-rush said foes with complete impunity later in the game.

An added loss with the ending of printed manuals is they often had extra facts and art you wouldn't find elsewhere. A lot had backstory/exposition/character descriptions that weren't even explained in the game. When you live in the middle of buttfuck nowhere with no internet and MAYBE one of those massive walkthrough books that shit was gold.

One of the most unique experiences I have had was with Ni no Kuni's remaster. It was a game that had a very important booklet at its side and this version doesn't have that. So what did they do? They added the booklet in the game and made its pages a collectible item. Got a spell? Here, take these pages explaining the spell with some great illustrations. Rest at an inn to obtain a page about the place, beat a boss and get a description of it. It made it really fun for me to learn about everything alongside the game itself.

9:43 pro tip for deflecting guardians pretty reliably, the moment you see the effects for beam firing, the blue light that sorta swirls and gathers around the eye, when you see it start that's when you hit the parry button. It only works if your a in a certain distance away from them( he's a little close at this moment by a couple steps) and it will take you a couple of try's to find the exact, but stalkers literally reposition them selves to that perfect distance if you give them enough time, and its not supper precise either, works on all types of guardians except flying and scouts, oh and in master mode guardians have like an extended charge that they do randomly that completely ruins your timing haven figured that one out yet.

It was fun trying to figure out how to get off the Great Plateau when first starting Master Mode. Magnesia was the best at the start. I tried to carry that magnetic lump throughout the whole area. Then that lynel appeared where it hasn't been seen in normal mode.

It's also great that shrines and towers have a distinct orange glow rather than being marked with greyed out icon on the map, meaning that instead of scanning the map you have to *use your eyes*

I actually enjoy handholding and linearity in video game tutorials. When the game's like "Hey, here's your sword. Now go and figure everything out, have fun or whatever" I just get analysis paralysis and end up not going anywhere.

You know what they say, the thicker the dilf the sweeter the juice Honestly I never pay too much mind to the tutorials since I usually just mash A, but because of this video I'll think more about game design holistically!

I totally agree with BotW having the best tutorial I've ever experienced, because while it does teach you what you need to learn it doesn't feel like a tutorial if feels like it's a real part of the game and has a purpose outside of having text telling you to press b to jump

I personally think that the Great Plateau is the best part of Buttwah in general, just from a design perspective. Of course, I plenty enjoyed the rest of the world as well, but it being so massive and less densely packed than the plateau kind of scares me off from replaying the game. So whenever I think of a sequel to Buttwah, I just kind of hope it's the scope of like five or six Great Plateaus next to each other.
