Should I start a breeding community of worms first to get my worm population up before I go into producing mass worm castings?

That's the most cost effective way... and allows you to learn from small mistakes

I have far fewer worms to trap-out before I sift castings than you do. Using a slighty buried trap basket to bait & collect them is very easy. I just dump the trap basket in a new bin. I think the transition is easier & kills fewer worms than using a shovel or trowl.

Use a tray with holes and bury it below the surface Or if planned ahead place the tray in position a month or two before When placing the watermelon on top with a dark cover over The worms can just be picked up with the tray

Hi Captain Matt Do you know that these bags you use can be found with a triable bottom release, hence take it to the hoist to lift it off the ground then open the bottom tie it will then release out of a small hole, I think they use them for grain. This way you can just take out the lower level before the worms 4:51 as long it is not too mois😊🇦🇺

Hey Captain Matt, love your videos and using your ideas. Want to ask, don't you kill alot of worms when removing them from your bulk bags with a shovel? Best regards Craig.

is it possible to explain how you avoid weed seeds in your vermicompost? I tend to have weedseeds still viable after 2 weeks of worms crawling through. Thanks in advance.

It totally love your Videos, they sparked my passion for the hobby, thanks for that! :-) I have one puzzleing enigma I cannot make any sense of, maybe you can enlighten me? :-) If I am not mistaken, you can make a bigbag of vermicompost within 6 month. And further I understand, that you have, how many worms in a bag? 10,000? It is said that a worm can eat half its wheight per day. So here is were my math demands, that there must be around half a million worms in a big bag to fill it within 6 month?! ;-) Could you clarify this situation a little for me please? :-) how do you manage to fill the bag within 6 month? And also, what would you say is the maximum stocking density for worms in a compost bin? :-)

Hi captain Mat I want to ask how many fold will 100 worms may be multiplied after one year according to your experience? How many average that one mature red wiggler will put cocoon per week ? And what is average of worms per cocoon ? Thanks

Depends on many factors - if intentionally breeding it can be maximized. I’ll be making some breeding videos over next few months that will cover the math.

Are you still sifting after taking castings out the bag?
@CaptainMattsWorms
@CaptainMattsWorms 11 ай бұрын
Yes... a quick sift fluffs castings up - not much rough stuff to sift out

Hi captain Matt. Can we just use hay/ straw as a bed?
@NanasWorms
@NanasWorms 11 ай бұрын
Bedding for worms needs to be moist, so I think hay or straw would work mixed in with other browns that can hold moisture (manure, shredded cardboard, etc.). The other thing to watch is to make sure the hay and straw have not been treated with persistent herbicides. ~ Sandra
