I now appreciate the likely reasons why Rick had to pull back from heavy action in Mummy 3, but saddling him with a "bad dad" plot was unforgivable. Does anyone really think Rick O'Connell would develop into a stern and disapproving father figure? Wouldn't it make sense if he was more of an irresponsible father, providing a bad example to his son and getting both into trouble, or something along those lines? Wouldn't that be more fun than the boilerplate daddy issues stuff?

I rewatched this movie about a week ago and it was honestly the first time I realized how similar it is to Indiana Jones. In that light, while Indiana Jones is a better movie overall, it feels like Evie and Rick are very much in conversation with Indy and Marion and make some definite improvements over their characters and chemistry. Adam Savage described Marion as a woman you can throw the gun to, but Evie is a character in her own right rather than someone who can become useful when the male lead chooses to acknowledge and tag them in. You were absolutely right about the two actors' chemistry being amazing - it's a huge selling point of the film to this day. Also, on a side note, huge props to whoever edited the original Mummy. It's pretty tightly cut together, without any bloat. There are a few moments I wish could be drawn out a little, but the movie has the core of what it needs and no extra to tell the story.

@@Davidsworldtravels Even though Van Helsing is not the greatest movie ever made, I still find it to be a great fun entertaining monster movie. The Mummy (1999) is a perfect blend of genres: it's got action, adventure, horror, romance, and comedy. Most importantly, it does all of them very well. I think very few movies (including Sommers' other projects) are able to shift between so many genres this successfully. It's an incredibly charming and entertaining film that is so rewatchable. I love the characters, humor, set pieces and story. Rick and Evie are so damn charismatic and their romance doesn't feel forced unlike a lot of other 90s flicks. Other characters are very memorable as well: Jonathan, Benji, Ardeth, Anck Su Namun, and of course Imhotep. Even the jokes and special effects still holds up well. While some of the CGI looks a little bit dated, the mummified Imhotep + his priests are still very menacing. It's one hell of a movie.

One thing the first Mummy movie did very well that other films often don't is keeping the scale of the problems relatively small or isolated. Leigh Whannell's 'The Invisible Man' worked because it truly get on with the times. It didn't just set on present day, but also touched topical themes. Cruise's 'The Mummy' just wanted to be another MCU knockoff. Sometimes, I fantasize on how I'd do the 'Dark Universe'. Instead of trying to ape the MCU, it'd be closer to the first two 'Conjuring' movies. Less modern day-set action blockbuster, and more of a period-set horror. It may not be topical, but surely would more of its own flair.

It's interesting that the colour of The Mummy 1999 is essentially orange and with the Tom Cruise reboot they went with the cold, dull blue that every depressing film seems to use now.

11:19 funny thing it was Cruise who re-wrote a lot of the script and made his character younger, he’s famous for constantly wanting to seem way younger than he actually is

More like obsessed too. I really wouldn’t doubt if cruise was part of some creepy weird cult that’s all about being obsessed with staying young. He just gives off cult member vibes so heavily. Could just be me feeling that way though lol

100% agree with the whole "each movie makes me appreciate the previous one more". Mummy 3 was a boring movie (Maria Bello is a good actress but has no chemistry on screen with Fraser), but "The Mummy" with Tom Cruise was honestly one of the worst big-budget movies I've seen in theaters. Just awful almost start to finish, especially the atrocious pacing - only decent part of it was Sofia Boutella, and she doesn't get much. There's a hilarious scene in a bar that's like a Simpsons joke - one of them is playing the skeptical one while the other one is the one trying to convince the other, and then they suddenly flip roles mid-conversation.

The craziest thing about the Tom Cruise Mummy movie is the broken trailer was soooooooo much better than the intended trailer and the scene in the actual movie. The lack of audio and only hearing his voice made it seem sureal and feel like we're seeing it from his perspective as everything is drowned out.

I was talking to a friend of mine about movies like this, The Zorro movies, The Pirates movies, they don't do those kinds of movies anymore. The first Mummy is still amazing. Also can we applaud for the guy who played Benny? That guy was comic gold in that role

If they did do a new Brendan Frasier The Mummy, I hope they write out Dragon Emperor and keep Returns. Would also give them a good shot at trying and hopefully succeeding with the whole old man Rick passing the torch, or just straight up Rick being Rick, if Brendan would be up for it

Y'know, I'm still honestly sad the Dark Universe never became a thing. I love the classic Universal Monster Movies, and given the new golden age of horror we're experiencing right now, it feels sad that the likes of Dracula, Frankenstein, The Wolf or Gillman aren't a major part of it.

Fun Fact: I really fricken hurt my neck on the Mummy ride at Disney world a few years back. There was a specific jarring motion and my neck was in pain for months after it. There's no point to my comment, except maybe that I felt as old as they were pretending Brendan Frazier was in the 3rd movie after that.

I honestly feel the Mummy still kinda holds up, just like the Sentinels from The Matrix (also 1999, damn what a banger year), because the design is so iconic. The half-rotted effect is so unique that I'm convinced both The Dark Knight and Breaking Bad stole it from this movie. Nowadays the CG is so much better, but the design aspect seems to have taken a dive lately. Just look at Iron Man: they can now render every particle of his nano-suit, but it is nowhere near as cool or memorable as the overlapping plate design from the 2000's. CG will always age, but a good design is timeless.

When I found out Tom Cruise was going to be the main character of the movie something told me on the spot it was going to be bad. It gave off the impression that we need a big time actor to be in the movie or else people won't see it. It reminds of how Disney made Johnny Depp's Tonto the main draw yet the movie is called The Lone Ranger.

The Mummy 1999 wasn’t just a silly action flick. It was the last part of my Childhood still remember going to see it in Theaters and at the end when everything is caving in the film burned so we had to wait maybe 5 mins for them to fix it and play where we left off. It was really funny and one experience that made this movie my personal Classic. Seen all of them in theaters even Cruise’s movie. Which I don’t talk about but I do hope we get a Mummy 4 LEGIT… I read rumor’s that they’re trying to get Brendan once again after the failure of 2017’s reboot. All I can say is Just Bring It! (The one Rock Reference) since his only appearance in Mummy Returns.

0:57, 3:39 Saying something is "dated" or "hasn't really stood the test of time" is a detracting and superficial way of pointing out its age, a factor that should not be considered an imperfection. Imagine making CGI effects in 1999, just to call them "dated" 20 years later. You're essentially saying that they're too indicative of their time period to be any good, which is kooky talk.

I'll be fair to Jungle Cruise and say that the green screen effect seems more like a stylistic choice than them simply leaning on CGI. It seemed to have played more heavily into it being based on a ride over it trying to tell some grand life changing adventure.

The Mummy= 10/10 - A perfect action movie with a bit of mistery and an excelent atmosphere. The Mummy Returns= 7,5/10 - A good follow up, but still somewhat disappointing compared to the original. Vey watchable and enjoyable. The Mummy 3= 5/10 - Average as fuck. Not memorable, but hey, at least some of the orginal characters are still funny and enjoyable. The Mummy (2017)= 3/10 - Ehhhhhhhh. I guess the Mummy is very hot.

I remember discussing Kevin J OConnor with another film student and they referenced the mummy but not in a good way. He wasn't into A Knights Tale either, and honestly I think both are better than a lot of what's churning out today. You can see their inspirations but they managed to create their own name and still hold up years later.

I lap up The Mummy Returns cause the guys and gals are hot, Ardeth has a pet falcon and I love kidnappings with time limits. Always thought with the third Mummy that they shouldn't have recast his wife and instead had her pass away (perhaps in childbirth to their daughter), would have made things a bit more interesting. Replacing Evelyn just makes no sense. And age up Brendan a bit more.

I think it's interesting you don't touch on one of the success points missing for every adaptation after the first one. It was a great horror movie as well. The first act of that movie is pretty much a straight horror movie with the mummy having some genuinely unnerving scenes. I rember being terrified when that guy gets his eyes ripped out. I guess the newest one leaned on the horror a bit again but it had other problems as well.

It wasn't that Cruise signed on to a bad script. The original script for the film leaked and a lot of the worst aspects of it aren't present. A MAJOR part of the problem was actually that Cruise was given a lot of creative control. His character was originally going to be very different, with a lot of the parts where his character is supposed to seem young, cocky, cool, and sexy not being present in the original screenplay. Also, his character was supposed to be a deuteragonist to the Mummy, but Cruise's character became the central focus after Cruise got creative control. Not that any of this was helped by the film being also turned into a starting point for a cinematic universe first and foremost instead of being allowed to just be a movie.
