Yes I like Sam. He is able to do what he does because he has some great technical and boat working skills. And a lot of appetite for fairly extreme adventure. He is certainly not stamped out of the “normal “ mold. And in his case, that’s a good thing. And look what UMA has done with a pretty terrible boat. Their youth, skills and intelligence and inventiveness/creativity has gotten them where they are. Neither of these people are typical though.

I owned a Bristol 22 for many years. Loved that boat! Shapely, the outboard sat neatly in the u shaped cut out in the center of the transom. It motored well and I could lift the motor out of the water when not in use. Other Bristols, like this one, have issues with the outboards. The worst thing for a motor is to have to stay in the water all of the time. I'm sure there's solutions that have been mastered. I also race on an Ensign 22 , 10 Saturdays in the summer, here on Barnegat Bay, NJ. In Carl Alberg I trust! As always, Captain Q and Randay's evaluation of the boat is spot on and very interesting. Well done!

Cap is talking about James Baldwin in "Atom" I read his book years ago. He inspired me to start sailing and cruising. Then, I became a boat builder and now, 18 years later. I'm living in Thailand building my first self designed Catamaran to retire, sailing the Islands of the S. Pacific. It's been a pretty good run, I can't complain. My motto is, "Failure is just success in progress." (unknown author) If I were there, a young sailor and looking for a boat. I would buy this Bristol. I've always loved them. Anything Carl Alberg designed was pretty damn good.

Welcome Back Capt Q!! Cutting to the chase: Triton, A bit heavier, way more sail area (60 sq ft?, and that's a Fractional one, all the Tritons I've seen or converted are Masthead now). To me, "barge-ier" than the Bristol. Really a less modern boat. For all youse electric motor guys it would take about 635 pounds of batteries to sink her an inch further, not sure but freeboard seems like it's already less on the Triton. Tartan 27: Centreboarder. I'm not going to try and quote numbers because the cb is a deal breaker for me. I think a Tartan 27 would be the best Sailer of the lot, however. You haven't lived until you sail one; pretty faultless. S&S design. Cat 27: We've put these through H-e-double-toothpick and I am going to state that this boat finishes fourth out of four when it comes to desire to lose sight of land. How's That for Biased? On the bright side, Cat 27's are great sailers, especially when they're circling a 270. Bristol 27: Sorry, this is my choice hands down. A little lighter, a little narrower, what seems to me a more assertive rudder, but alas, only 565 pounds of batteries would sink her another inch. My point with the batteries is that in order to accommodate an electric motor, boats like these would pretty much need some of the ballast drilled out. Looking at the numbers, the Bristol seems underpowered. But she also seems like she would be more easily driven. Someone somewhere said they were available with more sail area. If this mast is about 29'5" long, this is the "less sail area" version. They built these for 12 years, they built Tritons for only 9. The thing about these masts, (aluminum) from this era, is that they're smaller in diameter and a lot heavier than contemporary AA masts. That means that Even If You Break it In Half and splice it back together, it is going to last far longer than any of the alternatives. A lighter mast and especially a carbon rig would (I reckon) give her a very quick (stable) and disagreeable motion. So Please don't let anyone talk you into a modern rig based on its age. Forget about internal halyards, if you want an electrical conduit in there, bc there's not room for both. Many of these rigs have Narrow Halyard sheaves (and many have giant diameter main halyard sheaves), but our solution to sheaves that are too narrow for rope halyards is: Change the masthead from four narrow shivs into a masthead that just takes two wide ones, fore-and-aft, (for the main halyard), and hang the jib halyard(s) on external blocks. Be sure to route the halyards to Not Touch The Spreaders. As an aside: back then we figured it was ok to "laminate" thin stainless steel tangs and straps like we used to with bronze tangs. You can't. Anything stainless needs to be THICKER than the original (tangs, chainplates, strap toggles, tang bolts, etc.), or it will be unreliable. You can't lay stainless steel over an alloy masthead casting either (single strap joining the backstay to the headstay), something I've seen done on many mid-century boats, because of the way the alloy casting will react under the ss. If you must, insulate with plenty of Elastomeric sealant. Insulating gaskets? Inferior, except when engineered into the mix from the start on certain euro production rigs. I personally never use any pre-made "gaskets" to bed mast hardware. Having Never set foot aboard a Bristol 27, I think I can speak with some authority as long as you don't mind opinions. But we certainly paid our dues on a certain Triton, and what I remember most is the permanence of the interior mouldings. I mean, it was like you could choose any layout you wanted as long as it was the one that came cast into the Triton's interior. This Bristol, on the other hand, is a blank canvas. If you want to change things up go for it. An hour spent below with a garden sprayer refilled six or seven times with a dilute bleach solution would change everything you see into pearly white. Just be careful about adding too much weight! That stove and its dangling fuel lines are pretty scary. The propane stove retrofit is aka "delivery skipper's best friend". And only slightly less dangerous than the alcohol one. On the flip side, devoting the whole Lazarette to an outboard motor is something I would never do. These lazaretti will unfortunately fill up with water just when you really need them to be bouyant, floating the stern not sinking it. Essentially means this is really a Bristol 24.5. Unsolicited rant: This is the only downside to Coronado 25's, if you ignore the gigantic companionway hatch. I'm not saying that she needs an inboard. I like having an electric outboard running off a 4D. See how I trash electric technology and then embrace it? The reason is that you should expect to sail everywhere, and only use the motor when you absolutely have to. On an external bracket, which can hang off the leeward side adjacent to the cockpit (custom) as well as the transom. As far as installing Any type of inboard goes, you're still going to have to put up with those tiny mid 20th Century apertures and that's kinda bleak. Seems like under power our (George Stevens') Triton "Antigone" did around 3 and one half knots. Bottom Line, This would be a fun boat to sail. I Really Like this boat! Thanks so much to Sailboatdata.com, any Facts presented are off of that site. As far as Cape Dorys go, please refer to Sam Holmes.

My Alberg 30 self steers amazingly well on all tacks with sheet-to-tiller steering. It takes practice to learn but no need for the expense and weight of a wind vane. Also, it is easily overpowered with a 150 Genoa (a common complaint). The cure, use a 110 or 100 % jib, know when to reef the main, and don’t overpower it.

She has great bones and a good pedigree and a fair price . so with some sweat equity time and a few dollars you will have a boat worth more than you put into it .and not to forget it comes with a great history of it's own that you can add to . I would say this is an adventure from beginning to end .and well worth the trip.

Wondering, would a small regenerative electrical motor be a nice addition..
@YachtHunters Жыл бұрын
Seem like a great idea.. considering she’s a heavy gal that might not be influenced by a little drag of regenerative 👍

DOVE started coming apart before Graham completed his circumnavigation. Nat Geo bought him an Allied Luders 33, RETURN OF DOVE, to finish the voyage.

Thanks for this tour! Never got to see one but it was on my shortlist- bought an PCS Orion 27 instead (which you also toured). Nice seeing the shout out to Sam Holmes- been following him for a few years...again, similar sized as you point out. Is 'pocket cruiser' the right term?

Put a little shine on that boat inside and out, and she'll be a real head turner. She just looks a little tired right now and in need of a facelift, like me

I could see cruising around Lake Champlain on the weekends but the livability is somewhat lacking to my taste. I appreciate any and all of your videos Captain Q and Ran Day and as always the interesting history and video editing. Judging by Sea Dog's expression viewing the nav station, I think he was hoping for his own room and gourmet kitchen. As a young man though, sure, why not. As Captain Ron would say , " If it's going to happen, it's going to happen out there."

I bought a 1966 weekender model Bristol 27 last summer for around $1000. Even needing a bit of work it was still a great deal..It's a bit small for a couple but it is an excellent " man cave" boat as mentioned for 1 person. Everyone is impressed with the construction and woodwork inside compared to newer boats..

Hope the Capt and his erstwhile sidekick Ran Day are doing alright, hopefully out enjoying a stiff breeze on the Bay. My brother is in the yard working on his boat he had a heart ablation last week, now he's back, hard at it , working on his project. Like Capt.Q, I begged him to buy one that would float and sail, worry about fixing thing later. Noooo, he had to buy a Hull , a cat, so twin hulls, with broken windows and rotted interior. And what is he working on first? the exterior.....I thought he would have gotten it livable inside first. The exterior was chalky and dirty. What do I know. I know you can't get a man to change his course once it's set. If I had enough money, I would buy him a boat to sail and enjoy, get him out of the yard. I'm scared he won't get out and sail. He's younger than me, so I guess I'm still trying to look out for him. He's in Deltaville. If anyone can help him I'd be grateful. I'm in Kentucky and can't. I'm still taking care of a farm
@YachtHunters Жыл бұрын
Sorry to hear he went the cat route. But whatever floats your boat ! Maybe he will get some ideas from one of our episodes and go monohull and donate his current project to the local HS. Good luck Thom regardless

@YachtHunters Жыл бұрын
Would love to… especially after watching Erik Aandera on his Contessa… cheers
@petestack Жыл бұрын
Erik's is a Contessa 35 (based on a Doug Peterson one tonner), whereas the 32 is a slightly older David Sadler design with an almost unrivalled reputation for seakeeping at its size.

@Captain Q, Yacht Hunter there's a channel called refit and resail on KZbin. He's in the UK and does alot of great work on the old contessas..

@petestack I have looked into the contessa sailboats because of their well known sea worthiness. Pretty amazing boats.. much like the Dufour sailboats.. there's a guy from Europe who is redoing a contessa that belonged to someone within that company

It's probably for the best that you don't do videos of boats in Colorado. I'd already be trying to make payments on 2 or 3.
