Wow! You two are so amazing for all you’re doing to advance captive breeding. I had no idea they could have this many babies. I can only imagine the stress when all those babies go down to molt. It is so hard not to panic, I’m sure. You will deserve a huge celebration when they finally get to land. ❤️🙏🏻

I hope potential breeders are documenting this, there are a lot of hermit crabs being imported into captivity, this means there is potentially a massive captive gene pool. With such a large imported sample, a massive captive population can be established and remain stable for decades(even centuries) with inbreeding being very rare.
@CrabCentralStation3 жыл бұрын
YES!!! Thank you, Kenneth! Plus the breeders are already talking about how we are going to track the gene pool and share/swap offspring to keep from inbreeding.

How many inch is the substrate in the tank behind you? I bet it is very tedious finding them Shed day is challenging Coffee early start to this day?
@CrabCentralStation3 жыл бұрын
All of our tanks have 12 inches of substrate except for the captive bred baby tank which has between 6-8 inches I can’t remember how much we put exactly 😅

Do u think it would be easier to do fewer water changes if the krisels were larger? Also, next year u should host “interns” lol. 2x/day volunteer pipette crew! Calling all neighbor kids!
@CrabCentralStation3 жыл бұрын
LOL! Thanks for making me laugh, I needed it! We are going to make some pretty big changes for our next attempt. We learned a lot at CrabCon this year and we are excited to put some of the new research being done, into practice!

So what are your plans for over 1000 crabs? Or do you not expect them to live to maturity
@CrabCentralStation3 жыл бұрын
There is a very small survival rate, unfortunately. Those who have been successful have only gotten about 2% to land.
@martharivas94503 жыл бұрын
What will you do with all of those baby hermit crabs?
@CrabCentralStation3 жыл бұрын
The reason hermit crabs spawn thousands is because most of them will not survive. If we get any to land, we will put them up for adoption.

What species of hermit crab is suitable for novices?
@DracoTheDragon3 жыл бұрын
I would recommend Purple Pinchers. Ruggies are another good option though.
@CrabCentralStation3 жыл бұрын
I agree with Draco the Dragon, Purple pinchers are great to start with. They are the most hardy.
@lopezfamily09113 жыл бұрын
is it okay if i take my hermit crab on a walk ?
@CrabCentralStation3 жыл бұрын
No, I'm sorry, hermit crabs are considered a hands off pet. They need high humidity to breathe. Without the proper humidity their gills will be damaged as they are suffocating. Taking them out of their tanks also causes stress which can lead to dropping limbs.

Why not have a giant tank hold temperature controlling water, containing a slightly less giant tank of a bioactive water, so that water changes don't have to happen while babies are at their smallest, and feeding species are already in place, as is shed consumption by other maintenance species, and poop consumption by plants?
@CrabCentralStation Жыл бұрын
The water is moving in a circular motion. The babies can not have obstacles in the water causing them to get stuck or hung up. If I could recreate the ecosystem, space, water flow, of the ocean - I would …. But I can’t do that in my house on my budget. We do have a holding tank with filtered water at the same temp/salinity that we use for water changes.
@DaniMartVTen Жыл бұрын
@@CrabCentralStation that just might be the trade-off. For all intents and purposes, breeding Hermit Crabs may as well be like breeding Armored Guinea Pigs? You'd think a small cage can produce healthy litters with a single breeding pair, but the most successful breeders are those who use whole rooms to free-range a herd. Hermit Crabs despite their small size, just might be a large space project? A trade-off might be to convert a saltwater swimming pool as a seasonal breeding tank, like how Koi breeders do it with fresh water.
