These tips and tricks are a great sneak peak at van progress and the marriage of fresh metal to patina is very pleasing to the eye, like a Van Gogh painting but for petrol heads

You could also bolt a cheap cabinet hinge to the captive nut before cutting it out, then tack the hinge to the panel, remove the bolt, flip back the hinge & bolt your new repair section to the hinge, flip it into position, tack the repair section in, then remove the bolt & grind the hinge off. I use this method all the time & get perfect alignment. Great videos, keep them coming.

If you were to use a countersunk bolt in the captive nut through the washer before welding the washer to the nut it might end up more central. Also if its a close fit and the positions isn't too important you could just run a tap through it :) Fantastic videos mate, really enjoying them. Also, just got to the part about a countersunk bolt, great minds haha!

Great video young man! When I repair or install a captive nut I always thread a bolt/setcrew though the skin and into the captive nut so I ensure my fit is spot on.

I use fully threaded flat head screws to hold a nut centered for welding. I welded a t-handle to the frequently used ones. The taper helps as long as the hole is clean on both sides and you hold the nut flush while tightening.

At 7:04 you are talking about centering the nut and washer holes. I would thread a bolt through, and put some anti-spatter on the threads so they don't get damaged with the welding. (so the order would be bolt head, washer, nut). this would ensure the holes line up before welding, and it will also ensure nothing moves
@howtocreatesculptures67135 жыл бұрын
wouldn't that be kind of hard to have the magnet holding the washer thats being welded in place ? because if one washer is going to cover that from the front how do you get to the back then or vice versa if the washer is on the inside what is holding the bolt from just falling in the hole ? sorry just trying to understand your idea is all : ) wouldn't the bolt head get in the way of the magnet holding it in place?

joseph legere when trap the washer, even if it’s centred quite well the pull from the weld can pull the washer over and cause the threads to bind against the washer. The chamfered bolthead or just a simple piece of tube with a chamfer on it works well. Cheers Trev 👍

If the nut is a fraction of centre you can use a tap , run it through the washer and cut a thread into it .

Hey, when the washer ends up slightly off centre, why not simply run a tap through the nut all the way past the obstruction? Also, You could weld the washer on with a bolt through the nut in pace, tp help keep the washer centred, perhaps.
@trevsblog2 жыл бұрын
Yep great ideas 👍 since making this I’ve made myself a tapered tube that fits over the bolt, the tapered part fits neatly inside the washer holding it dead centre. Cheers Trev 👍

The perfect vehicle to demonstrate this would have been an old 67-76 Plymouth or Dodge vehicle. Never seen so many door hinge pins and busted /cracked door lock striker areas in the jambs.

To better fix the problem with the nut off center of the washer, run a tap through the nut. Also: when you weld it in, have a bolt threaded through, and remove the bolt immediately after welding. If you put too much heat to the nut, the bolt will prevent the threads from distorting.

Perhaps I am missing something, but wouldn't it been easier to "hook" the fallen nut assembly with a long bolt with the proper threads, pull it up flush and tack weld it in place.

Hiya again Trev, i forgot to ask you is this the same way someone would repair a seat nut in a truck floor that has rust all around it and if it gets tightened too much anymore its gonna break free : ( ??? Thanks . Nice rabbit ridge LOL

How to create sculptures possibly, it would depend upon how the threaded part was attached inside. Cheers Trev 👍
