A lot of frustrating issues in this approach. First the weather, it just doesn't know what it wants to do and hard to make a decision. Then the ATIS, they could have taken the "I" out for lack of good information. Then how about that taxi clearance before you were even slowed to taxi speed. But you handled it like a pro, well done.

Love the camera location! Always learn a lot here. Merry Christmas Jim and family.
@captmoonbeam9 жыл бұрын
+Steven Favignano Thanks Steven. Not every one agrees with that but, I think this angle gives a much better feeling for what the pilot is actually seeing. If the camera is centered between the pilots then moved back where you can see the crew then, it's not the same as what the crew experiences. It's more like a passenger view from the bench seat. In the Citation we have large windshields and have a broad unrestricted view of what's in front of us and to the side. Hope you guys have a great Christmas. I just got home after 5 days of running and am looking forward to the holiday.

I luved it!! A big sensation of speed close to the ground.About the 2:15 minute mark, you said something about 'a really high temperature to get ice'.... was it above the freezing point, 0C? If so, was it due to a low pressure area on the windscreen?
@captmoonbeam9 жыл бұрын
+david barker Hi David. We normally turn on our Ant-ice equipment at +10 C or lower in visible moister. Low pressure areas on the wing and engine cowl are where low pressure cooling tends to be more of a problem, Not the windshield. We were at +6. Normally any ice on the windshield melts off as soon as we hit +1 or +2. those temps combined with the high airflow will melt it right off in a few seconds. I think we may have passed through a layer of warm air that freezing rain was falling through.

@MichaelSchafir9 жыл бұрын
This is a great video and a good example of some of the challenges of IFR flying. Why a circling approach? Is there no active ILS for that direction?
@captmoonbeam9 жыл бұрын
+Michael Schafir there is and that would have been the first choice. But, that would have meant landing with a very strong tailwind that would have exceeded the tailwind landing limitation for the aircraft.
@MichaelSchafir9 жыл бұрын
Makes perfect sense. Thank you.

Love your videos! I wanted to be a pilot but my dreams got ruined with me having a hearing problem and wouldn't be able to pass the hearing test.
@captmoonbeam9 жыл бұрын
+Ryan Ripley Hi Ryan. Thanks for watching. Sorry to hear that. The vision and hearing test knock a lot of people out. Pilots never escape, if you fly long enough eventually one of the items they test for knocks you out.

So, the American flight where were they positioned in relation to you..?
@captmoonbeam9 жыл бұрын
+BossaNossa1 the controller was working multiple frequencies over a large geographic area. We never saw the American flight.
@BossaNossa19 жыл бұрын
Could you explain why exactly you guys couldn't land the first time when you had visual, was it your speed..? Thanks!
@captmoonbeam9 жыл бұрын
+BossaNossa1 If we had landed on the runway when we broke out the strong tailwind would have pushed us much further down the runway than was safe. That's why we circled to the other side so that we could land into the wind and reduce our landing distance.
@michaelmitiszek15389 жыл бұрын
Very challenging. A co-pilot seems to be very helpful in such extreme weather conditions. Is this Citation registered for single pilot operation as well?
@captmoonbeam9 жыл бұрын
+Michael Mitiszek Hi Michael. The Encore is not certified for single pilot operations but, you can get a waiver from the FAA to fly it single pilot. That's an additional check ride on top of the one you would normally take. We can't fly it single pilot because of the type operations we fly. My copilot flies an Encore for another company and he flies it single pilot half the time.

Hey mister pilot, are you able to explain some tips and tricks about clouds and possible hazard . How do you analyze the weather, what should pilot do if icing occurs . Thank you grandpa! :D
@captmoonbeam9 жыл бұрын
+Mike Thomson If you start to pick up ice, get out of it. Icing tends to occur in layers and often a change of altitude with an associated temperature or moisture change will get you out of the icing.

@Windtee9 жыл бұрын
Fine circling approach! Great teamwork! Interesting how the RNAV 12R circling mins are 200' higher than the ILS 30L circling mins. I assume it has to do with the density of obstructions in the vicinity of the approach path of 12R. Were you using Cat C mins on the approach?
@captmoonbeam9 жыл бұрын
+Windtee B, returning home, a lot of times our ref is only 98 kts. Your right about the obstructions. Arriving from the west there is an antennae farm, hi-rise buildings and the arch.
