Working with graphics 20+ years and just few years ago that could considered as a miracle! And such a nice tutorial, no skipping, straight forward to the point. Really awesome! As well Capture One is amazing software, that's made right, such an intuitive, simple and powerful at the same time. If you would make updates policy a bit more relaxed and flexible... Perpetual license was a key point to buy C1. But a bit pricey at a regular price. As suggestion, if you drop regular price 2x, I think that 10x people would buy it, so like win-win situation.... Thanks again for tutorials!

2:49 The ability to temporarily activate the eraser brush (via holding Alt/Option) is a significant productivity booster and I was surprised to see that it wasn't featured in the recent live stream. I'm glad my proposal was eventually adopted and hope further productivity boosters like this one -- small feature, big effect -- will be considered in the future.

I bought a perpetual license two weeks ago, and already a new update is coming with an important improvement, though not for me with my fresh license. I REALLY feel cheated... When I was in contact with support at the time of purchase because I was given the wrong activation code by the seller, I could well have gotten a hint that a new version was on the way. I don't use the program often enough that a subscription is justifiable financially. So now I feel like I bought a product only to find that the expiry date has already arrived, after a fortnight.

@@CaptureOne No, it didn't work. The code is not accepted. The same thing happened when I bought the license on the 10th of October, I had received a wrong license from the dealer who sent a new one and it worked. And now here I am again... same crap as last time. I'm getting tired of this.

The price is too high for incremental feature add-ons. The private equity company Axcel just wants to blow up the software business to sell the business ASAP. I hate subscriptions.

Great tutorial. My question is: can Capture One Pro be used to create layers to replace the sky? Essentially to stack two photos together. The application would be Milky Way photography, where you track the sky, do several exposures, but then do a long exposure on the foreground. Then you stack the tracked exposures of the sky, and with this stack replace the background, i.e. sky of the long exposure foreground (where the stars are trails). Then stitch several of these photos into a panorama.

Hi there, Exposure stacking will work with HDR merging, but you won't be able to do background "substitution" with a long exposure shot, as the tool will work only with HDR values. You can use Edit With to send the images to a 3rd-party app, substitute the background there, save the image back to Capture One and keep working with Panorama in Capture One.

Excellent intro to layers and masks. I've been wondering for a long time! Thank you. Question: fine stray hairs are always a problem for subject selection tools in other products like those from Adobe. How well does Capture One handle them? Is there a workaround?

Hi Art, you can try to zoom in, use AI Selection Brush and Rasterize the mask. That should be a good way to work with stray hair.

Masking looks good. I'm sure I could get this info on the C1 website but I'll ask here: I have a mid 2012 MacBook Pro with 10.15 OS, will the newest version of C1 work with my old laptop? Thanks

Because there trying to get more money. I got the same problem. There just pushing people to Subscriptions.! if i like to go from 16.1.5 to the 16.3 i need to pay 360+ euro (Or get a discount code and still pay 200+ euro). It feels like Robbing people.! I'm going Full on to Skylum (Luminar Neo). Full on updates and extra's for a Year and if you like the extra's you can keep it for like 40 euro after the year and not 200+ euro for a "Normal Update". A update of masking that every software already got for a longtime!

A real plus would be the ability to draw gradient masks (linear or circular) over background masks (drawn by IA brush or magic brush)... Unless I'm mistaken, this is impossible (for the moment?).

Hey Tony, you can create a gradient mask first, then subtracts parts with the AI Eraser. However, masks and adjustments will be stacked on top of each others as independent masks. In case you want one mask to overwrite the other, please create a feature request here captureone.co/improve and our developers will take a look at it.

There is no such option at the moment. You can use Edit With to continue editing in Photoshop, however, that would be TIFF or PSD with merged adjustments (without Layers and Masks).

How do you just mask skin? Ideally in a style so you can apply across a number of photos. Do you just select subject and then manually remove the clothes?!

Using C! Pro for desktop, software up to date but not seeing the layers tool like yours IE, no AI brush/eraser or Subject/Background option as yours does. Just double checked and states no update and on C1 Pro build 16.2.5.9

If you're new to Capture One, it's worth noting that you're not seeing the whole screen in the beginning of the video. Up above the window your seeing, outside what''s showing in the video 1 -- He's A) gone to the tools section (left side of your screen) and he's B) clicked on the "ADJUST" tab up at the top. This will show the histogram you're seeing and below that, on your screen, you'll see the layers and masks section you're seeing in this video.

It feel like getting Robbed i got a Full license for 16.1.5 but no AI Masking (Luminar / Lightroom and on1 Raw got this all in update with out extra cost). Also got the Subject and background masking already 2 to 3 years. How is it that with a standard tool in every software. Is a thing to pay for in Capture One 23 ? It's just BS that it's only with Subscription or a other 360euro for Subject Masking.! Feels like robbing people that got the Software this summer.! If this is really going to be the pay for subject masking! I'm full on going to Luminar Neo (Color and rendering of photographs if on par with Capture one and better then LR or On1 Raw)

@@CaptureOne Regards to LR it's using the Masking for a lot of years already. same as the rest. And with On1 Raw and Luminar Neo it's with a Year of updates. only not the Extra's and also masking Subjects is already in the software for a long time.! And it's BS i get Capture One pro 23 license in June and a Standard Masking feature is not getting added. The only thing i can get is a Code to pay not 369 euro for the Update but 40% off (Still 200+ euro for a small update). this is just pure Robbing people.! Love the software and workflow but it's just BS doing this and more or less pushing people in to a Subscription.! Thank god Skylum is working with photographers and not just going for Extra sells for small thinks like Subject masking that every other software already got for a longtime.!

Didn´t you read how the licensing works before you Bought? "I have a license for Capture One Pro 23 purchased after February 14, 2023" You receive major bug fixes (16.x.x) up until a new paid version (16.x) is released. The service updates (16.xx) do not include feature updates. If you wish to get a new version of Capture One Pro, you need to buy a new license (16.x) - which will contain new features and functionality." And why buy it when you can get a subscription with ALL the updates and you don´t need to worry and you can Cancel when you want? 🙄🙄

Good luck. There going to let you pay full price of 40% off discount for this update (200+ euro). i got the same for 16.1.5 to this update. So i will go away from Capture One because of this behavior. And not combine it with my Luminar Neo but just use Luminar Neo (With all free updates for a Year)

Hi there, you can add all your adjustments, including the AI Mask, into a Style and then apply that Style to the rest of the images. The mask will adapt accordingly.
