1985 was the 'Year of the Spy'. A dozen high profile espionage cases dominated news headlines in the United States as the Cold War entered its final phase.
One of the spies outted in that year stood out from among his peers. Jonathan 'Jay' Pollard was a Jewish American civilian intelligence analyst stationed at the US Navy's Anti-Terrorist Alert Center (ATAC).
Over a period of 18 months, Pollard supplied an estimated 30 cubic feet worth of claassifid and top secret material, not to the Soviet Union or another of the USA's enemies, but to one of its closest allies - Israel.
The revelation of his betrayal sent shockwaves through the inlelligence community and the public at large, and threatened to caused the USA and Israel to teeter on the brink of a diplomatic criss.
His life sentence following a plea deal only served to fan the flames of controversry, with some regarding Pollard's punishment as a grave miscarriage of justice, while others believe he got exactly what he deserved.

@thejuice8325
@thejuice8325 Ай бұрын
I'm not saying this is right by any means, but given the geopolitical and economic value Israel has brought in the middle east (and especially for the US) it makes sense to work past this like they did. America would have a lot more to lose than gain if they stopped being allies with Israel because of this event. Although let's not forget that relations were very tense between Israel and America for a couple of years. They by no means just "got away with it"
@edwardolson8996
@edwardolson8996 Ай бұрын
@@thejuice8325 For many decades many Americans and Israelis declared that Israel was America's greatest friend and ally, and implying, and sometimes outright stating, that the relationship was equally beneficial. This was preposterous. America could have gotten along very well without Israel, but the reverse wasn't remotely true. More recently Israel has become more useful as an ally, but the relationship is still far from equal. The outrage of Israel trying to sink our spy ship, the Liberty, which they came very near achieving, with the loss of many American lives, in the 1967 war, has been covered up, and very few Americans know anything about it. If the truth became widely known among Americans the shock would severely damage the relationship, as well it should. Israel will do anything it can get away with, and then some.

A minor correction: Dachau was not a death camp but the oldest concentration camp in Germany. While many died there (41500) it was not the industrial killing operation we know as "death camps" These we located in Poland, such as Treblinka, Sobibor and Auschwitz. Of these only Auschwitz also had an "industrial division" (slave labor at factories) .

America has been Israel’s main ally, and our sole ally in the Middle East, since 1949. Yes, it’s been an agreement of convenience for Israel, but it’s ridiculous to think they’ve become the “international force” that they currently are on their own. The international police (the US) have counted them as their own for 75+ years.

 @desertdetroiter428 I'm not knowledgeable on much regarding the history of US relations with the Middle East (or on anything at all) especially prior to WW2, but it seems we've always wanted a good friend in the region - at least one. Once Israel was created as an adversary of their neighboring countries, it makes strategic sense that the US would leverage this position to build a lasting relationship in order to support the existence of this otherwise unsupported nation. We provide critical support to fight off any legitimate or imagined threats; they provide "stability" by not allowing the entire region to be adversarial towards us. It's an ugly unspoken agreement that entirely goes against the mantra of "we don't negotiate with terrorists," but I suppose this relationship existed before that unofficial policy became unofficial
@desertdetroiter428
@desertdetroiter428 3 ай бұрын
@@hudsonv1962 but again, the United States had nothing BUT friends in the Middle East before 1948. We were respected and seen as a fair arbiter over the Europeans who’d traditionally run roughshod over the region. Every Arab nation admired us, and so did Turkey and Iran. I’m not blaming Israel for our poor standing in the Middle East and we certainly did a lot of stupid shit to put ourselves in this position. Our actions in Iran in 1953 are the REAL source and the beginning of our trouble in the region. But our unqualified support of Israel no matter what certainly doesn’t make things better.

A US citizen who was a traitor. Even if he provided secret info to an ally it could have been shared and stolen by agents and used anyway. This traitor should not be lionized.. Disgraceful.

The story of what Ann did is murky. She allegedly in the original version took a suitcase of "valuables" to a retired Nav officer in the same building , someone they knew slightly and asked him to hold it until she returned in a few days. Whe she did not return , he grew suspicious and opened it and found materials stamped to secret. He then knew where to phone. The business of accidentally leaving compromising material in the house is a later development. TEF

I found the story of the suitcase - as per a NYT copy of the government's case - HTML document -text-of-the-government-s-summary-of-its-espionage-case-against-pollard The suitcase which Anne Henderson Pollard had asked her neighbor to retrieve from its hidden location on Monday, Nov. 18, 1985, was subsequently turned over by the neighbor to F.B.I. and N.I.S. agents who searched it pursuant to warrant. The suitcase was found to contain United States classified documents relating to the national defense, many of which, the Government's evidence would show, had been delivered to the Israelis, copied and returned to Mr. Pollard........ Earlier on there is an explanation of how she left the suitcase under a stairwell in the residential building and asked a neighbour to retrieve it . He did so but then , because it all seemed cloak and dagger , did not forward it to a hotel where she was staying. "She then went to a neighbor and requested that the neighbor retrieve the suitcase and deliver it to her at a local hotel. The neighbor retrieved the suitcase but did not make the delivery." - It's pretty clear there's an issue right - the neighbour is going to say to himself - why is she not willing to take this out of the building herself ? Realistically Anne got a pretty small sentence for this (everyone knows that if you get 5 years as a first offender and behave well it likely will be 2.5 years ). Just observations - no dog in the fight.

I thought that I knew this story but ... The red flags this guy was waving -- for many years -- were pretty damned obvious. There mustn't have been much of a background check on him -- ever. Would you mind telling me what the source was for the brief overhead shots of Central Park at around 15:00?

While both Pollard’s accusers and his supporters have their own incentives to characterise him according to their respective stories, I believe way he divorced his wife with no warning tells you a lot about his character. Jonathan Pollard’s actions, espionage aside, paint him as a peculiar and narcissistic man with a very weak moral conscience. He seems to be extremely impulsive and short-sighted, with a strong drive to be important, even if the method of achieving notoriety will inevitably backfire.

I recently showed spook dad an article with this guy bc Pollard was running his mouth about killing hostages. Dad was naval intel/NSA during peak cold war. he says, oh, that Jack a** 😂 LOL he feels the same about pelton, walker, etc. just a mess. but that was the funniest response I've gotten out of him.

I don’t like Pollard one bit but he’s absolutely correct on this count. The IDF tank gunners and helicopter pilots have openly confirmed this. The articles are in Haaretz.

I apologize if I've missed it but have you done Jim Nicholson yet? The guy who was convicted not once but TWICE for spying and received that second conviction after manipulating his son into spying for Russia and also told thr judge that he'd rather serve Russia than ever show any remorse for his actions? It's a wild story covered by others but something tells me you'd tell this story better and with more depth than anyone else out there. ❤❤

It would be a very short video, but in vein of this story you could do a video on the Toebbes. The husband was in the U.S. navy and arrested like two years ago I think for conspiracy to commit treason, same with his wife (who was a teacher). Dunno if it would be a long video, might be interesting though.
