Learn how I 3D Scanned Norway’s oldest Stave Church dating back to 1130AD, built shortly after the end of the viking age. Using photogrammetry and RealityCapture, I was able to get a 3D model of the church, and brought it into Unreal Engine 5 to bring it to life, and rendered it out for colorgrading in Davinci Resolve.

@malydok

The church in Ethan Carter is based on the Vang Stave Church in southern Poland, which is actually a Norwegian church transferred to Poland in 1842. The game contains other regional references, the dam, hydro-power plant and the railway bridge are based on their counterparts in Pilchowice. Not sure how accurate but I remember hearing that the game was one of the pioneers in photo scanning real environments.

@@WilliamFaucher Would be nice to see how a Stave Church looks on the interior. I agree that it would be a huge struggle to capture the interior. I am also curios how you photogrammetry the windows and if you post processed the resulting mesh of the windows, I see that the Church has a limited amount of windows and they are not zoomed in within the video.

Not even 10 years. Right now, games are capable of this, but only the highest end gaming PC is capable of doing it this outstandingly well. Currently EPIC is using Fortnite to showcase these features, and the results (even for a more cartoon art style) are jaw-dropping on the latest consoles. I played the other day and was just marveling at the fine details you don't notice unless you stop and look. I stopped in a "cheese and meats shop," and the cut wheels of cheese up close were slightly low resolution, but still good enough to show every little crater and crack. The ray tracing used for reflections and shadows in the game were running in software, and they also do a great job mimicking what the brute force of hardware based solutions can do. Honestly console hardware just needs to catch up at this point as these techniques for more realistic art direction is fairly demanding
