Duck keeper here: the safest thing would be to bring them into a safe place like the barn at sunset. They are very trainable so once you get the routine down, it should be a breeze to implement and they may even start putting themselves to bed for you.

Would it be possible to just raise the enclosure and make a closed roof with that wired fencing it has, like you would do with pigeons? I wonder how ducks would react to it though, and if they would hurt or kill themselves in if trying to fly.

Some info: Some people have made "run highways", long sheltered run paths/above ground tunnel, only duck height, going to their daily spots so they aren't so noticeable or accessible to predators from above. (Usually the typical wood or also with wire mesh sides).. Flying predators like an open quick and quiet swoop in to be unnoticed, so the more things in it's way, the better. Slowing it down or getting it's wings to flap noise can give the ducks extra second to react and retreat to the protective "highway".

...unless you are a barn owl. Anti-Hooters unite! In all seriousness (nobody will ever see this)- many legal deterrents can be used for local hawk and owl airborne infestations. Once they see your place as an easy 7/11 hotdog service, they tend to stick to the places...sometimes difficult to make cringe ah ah owl's or hawks peacefully relocate, so let's look at legal options as an educamatory feature for Uncle Ben & You: Zoning & Law Enforcement! Owl deterrents include (legally) the following: 1- Fake owls. Yes, even fake robot owls that hoot (motion detection). Other flappity hooters dislike those. They work. Owls have a job to do. We just need them to think...you know, they have enough owl employees over there at Uncle Ben's Chicken Tender Ranch so I will pass on applying. 2- Motion Detection. Since owls are nocturnal predators, lights and bright flashes at night will deter them from your yard/coop. Think of it as WW2 Germany, and you trying to spotlight the Hootie Bombers using motion detection. Since owls do like to sit around eating and a poopin' off their favorite branches, identify said branch, look underneath for their...uhhh..."hoot owl cat furballs". Now you know where he/she/they (not to assume Hooter genders) sit to quietly plan their assassinations or afterwards, their dinner, from. 3- The Bog-Standard Red Ryder/Daisy BB gun. NOT PELLET. Unknown to many people, the law is quite strict on Hooty McHootersons (and others), so do remember the things you CANNOT do, so you know the things you CAN do. Let's explore this together as a topic to help Uncle Ben. As follows: Hawks, owls, eagles, and all other nongame birds and songbirds (except for a few unprotected birds) are protected by various state and federal laws and may not be killed, taken from the nest, picked up, or possessed for any reason, and their feathers may not be possessed or sold. Now let us strictly note, it does NOT state deterrents are illegal. It states the following: Bird Murdering of Bird Serial Killers is a no-no. AKA- Illegal. Since we are not keeping, possessing, selling, trading or going on a full-scale village clearing raid & sweep of Hootertown that includes killing, it is perfectly legal to put a BB into an owl, near an owl, around an owl, etc. You might say "but IN an owl is illegal" and you would be right. We actually don't want that. So here's a trick: Don't pump up the bb gun enough to penetrate, and remember that Owls have amazing low-speed velocity projectile armored plating called "feathers" that shed like you wouldn't believe. Secondarily, remember the loud discharge of air mixed with a plink of a bb hitting will indeed scare them. 4- I must stress it's only criminal if you get caught. Which is the caveat of all criminals that end up ever getting caught the one time out of 300 times they do a thing, and we all know Uncle Ben isn't "about that gat & gangsta bird life" like that. Owls are sneaky. Quiet. Observant. Literal assassins of the night air. They are VERY good at it. But do note they only target prey that won't fight back, or be extremely loud. Owls are the shadow murderers of the night. Nothing is safe from them!...except if you run your ducks, geese, etc., to include chickens up into a chicken coop every evening. Which leads me to the last one: #5- Uncle Ben's Barnyard...believe it or not, ducks, geese, chickens, and pretty much all combinations, if given enough time, can be taught the habit of putting themselves up at night. You gotta stick to a pretty strict schedule, but once one of the smarter ones catches on, they will all do it together, and teach each other, even newcomers and kids. Which leads me to the last, last one... #6- Hooters and You: Bring in the Funk Machine. That's right...owls like other birds. They are not a fan of a human making a walk outside hooting back at them and clapping their hands, or singing. Hence why Uncle Ben gets visits at the 3am night shift...owls know when everything is at the low ebb on movement, noise, people...they study you just like you study them. Or more precisely, they are waiting for the grocery store security guard to take a nap. You mere presence is enough, especially if you locate them, then talk to them like you are on a chat show doing an interview, for them to vamoose. There are surely lots of other ways out there to discourage Hooters. But that's ok, we all live, learn...and hoot.
