The reason why deer are sometimes caught eating snakes is because many ungulates are actually opportunistic carnivores. They won't hunt, but a free snack is a free snack.

They will absolutely hunt if they're lacking a certain something that they would need from eating another animal, just not in the way most people think of hunting, they'll look for small things to stomp on and eat. Lot of herbivores do that actually.

I actually have a tortoise (lives in the house), a red foot rather than a sulcata, but he likes to climb things, which sometimes results in a face plant. It doesn't please him to be face planted, and sometimes he ends up on his back, but he loves to climb so much that he cannot stop...

I got a bobcat. He's the laziest housecat you could ever imagine. That's _why_ he's my housecat. Bro didn't download any of the bobcat drivers. The smoothest brain. Pacifist build. Won't even hurt bugs. His slaps are like he's dabbing moisture from your brow with a fancy handkerchief. You can grab and lift him by his back legs, and he just lets you. Spin with him upside down, and he uses centrifugal force to get in a good, twitchy power-stretch. Can't even wrestle him. Within 3 seconds, his grip loosens and he just holds your hand there and gives you a bath. Uncle (cuz Bob's yer uncle.) has no enemies. Or braincells.

I still have traumatic flashbacks to the time I hit a groundhog with my car. I had never cared about them before, just oversized rodents that would run and hide if I walked around a corner. I didn't farm so they weren't pests. I didn't mind them. I was speeding home late one night and the little guy appeared from the mid-length grass that grows over the parallel gulch. I swerved to avoid running him over with a tire, which unfortunately meant he was beneath my car, I prayed in that moment he would lie flat, but I was sickened by the thud of something soft and firm bouncing off my undercarriage, and glanced to see his form rolling at nonliving speeds in the beams of a following car. I see how sweet little pound is and relive the trauma. I feel so bad for cutting that little world short. Def relate to the part about USED to hunt deer

Glad you found the tortoise before it was too late. I lost my 10 year old snapping turtle when he tried to climb up a wall and couldnt back down from it because the 1/4 round molding and the baseboard caught him. His claws couldnt grab the tile floor, and suffocated while i was at work =(
