Ive had this idea knocking around for years. Yes treadmill motor 2 to 4 hp. Have to spin compressor at least at original engine idle speed.... so crank pulley diameter/compressor pulley diameter x 700 or so. Id guess 1000 to @1400rpm. Alot of comments on this idea( if one cares to google it) say it wont. work cause the car ac system is too small to cool a room(way bigger than a car volume).But remember the car volume is cooled from like 140 to 70 in a matter of minutes with something like 2-3 tons(24k-36k)btu. You only need to cool a room by ??? 10-15 degrees so it becomes a simple volume vs btu(heat removed) calculation. Sure it may have to run substantially longer than in a car, but then again a room is waaay better insulated than a car cabin. The beauty of it all( I envision one. day) is that. the treadmill motor can be SOLAR POWERED. Forget about super expensive vfd units that will take 4ever to come to market and expensive to repair. This would be a DC setup with no need for inverters and other expensive gadgetry typically associated with solar to ac 110 applications. And theres junk cars aplenty to be scavenged, until the corporate powers that be get a clue and start producing a ready made product.

i was looking for something like this (a small ac motor) to put inside the engine bay to drive the car ac instead of it taking from the engine torque. would you think it would be possible to find a dc or ac motor (i hear that ac is the way to go because dc motors overheat and need to rest every 30 mins or so) it would be better if the motor was a 12v or 24v or if it would use 110v or 220v i would just get it a separate battery and inverter to not put a load on the cars original battery, so is it doable??

If the compressor pistons weren't bad already now they are gone for sure, the compressor needs it's oil and a gas to lubricate the compressor

What in the world is he doing? The condenser would needed to be mounted outside, totally remote from the space you want to cool. The only part that should actually be in the space you are trying to cool is the evaporator.

iI thought of this idea a few years back...was going to make a treadmill motor bracket to temporarily mount over my car hood allowing me to remove engine belt and run a seperate v belt from compressor to treadmill motor(120 to 130 v at 16 to 18 amps typically)..Then i wouldnt have to entirely remove all the car ac components if it didnt work...Just never got round to it....YOU SHOULD BE CORRECT THAT WITH ENOUGH PANELS IN SERIES AND PARALLEL, IT SHOULD HAVE ENOUGH FLYWHEEL MOMENTUM TO START AND INDEED RUN THE COMPRESSOR...Now if the so called smart people ever catch on to this simple idea they might be able to perfect it,put it in a box and sell it instead of the AC 5000 btu window units(which would require a bigass inverter to do the same). The beauty of this setuip also is that it could operate from sun up(9isham to sun down 5-6pm ish) over the wide range of rpm that the sunlight would dictate,,,,just like in the car where it runs from engine 1000 to 5000 rpm range.....Game over??

I have been thinking about this as well for a few years. Not a lot of work involved when you can grab large systems out of a big suv. People underestimate a cars hvac because they dont understand how many BTUs it puts out based on rpm. Cars are full of windows and have a high heat load index, requiring sufficient cooling.
