For all my xenophobic friends (I know you are out there) here is a classic.. Arthur Lowe and his brow beaten wife trapped in a cable car with a load of dodgy foreigners.. Probably unbroadcastable now... I remember it was bloody funny when i saw it first 30+ years ago!!

Brilliant writing but, Arthur Lowe doesn't get the credit he deserves, he was class, his comedy timing and character acting is second to none. I genuinely believe he was one of the best that ever was. Just brilliant.

17:49 The intonation so the audience gets the joke halfway through the line, the pause; the man was a legend. When an actor can play essentially the same character so many times and still make you smile, that's something special.

In Norway we have a Norwegian version of that episode titled "Høyt Henger Vi" (We Hang High) (1982) in the Norwegian-Swedish-Danish television comedy series "Fleksnes", created by Swedish writer Bo Hermansson and based on Galton and Simpson's scripts for the British series "Hancock's Half Hour" and "Comedy Playhouse". So fascinating to see the original version and so funny. Now that's British humor I ever heard and watched as a Norwegian.

Arthur Lowe was a comedy genius. I loved his humour, timing and characters. It's uplifting to read the kind and supportive comments for him here. I don't recall seeing this before, but laughed to the core throughout. Typical Arthur in pompous character. With Galton and Simpson writing and Arthur in the lead role, you could not wish for more. Really enjoyed watching this again. Thanks for putting this on. All the Best......

Oh ha ha ha - foreign people, aren’t they funny they are different to us. Actually this is a lot cleverer than that as you would expect from Galton and Simpson - the joke is always on Arthur Lowes character, the pretentious little Englander who aspires to be more than he is. Similar to his Captain Mainwaring character in Dad’s Army and Also Tony Hancock in the Galton and Simpson Hancocks Half Hour and Hancock. It does a better job reflecting the class obsessed British society and the the insecurities of those desperate to move up the social hierarchy - coming up against the structures that limit them and i turn being blind to the limitations they are putting on themselves. This isn’t the outright Xenophobia seen in utter tosh like love they neighbor, mind your language and curry and chips. Shows that weren’t just bigoted but also utter crap and not in the slightest bit funny.
