No one forced the people to buy their cars, they could have bought at a different dealer. The blame should go to the car maker that is reducing production instead of lowering prices. And when dealers can't get cars from car makers all they can do is raise the prices on the limited stock they have because they lose money when they have nothing to sell.

It is tough to feel sorry for them. A local Kia dealership in Boise ID sells some 2024 Kia models as a "certified pre-owned" , especially when one Kia Forte with only 2 miles? According to their website. I took a photo of that too. So they sell the 2024 models as certified pre-owned so that they can charge higher interest rates vs brand new? Enough is enough! Kia is known for having a program where the dealer uses certain cars as loaner cars. Kia then authorizes them to sell them as certified used cars. Yes, dealers get a discount from Kia on the car. From my understanding there is no requirement how long they keep them as a loaner or the dealer gets creative on when the car entered the loaner program.

MSRP is just a psychological trick called an "anchor". Once a consumer sees a price, any price, on a piece of merchandise, that becomes an anchor that contextualizes the rest of their negotiation. The anchor can be completely arbitrary. In one study, consumers were told to write down the last 2 digits of their social security number, then asked how much they would pay for a bottle of wine. You can guess the rest. Think about it: why would a manufacturer care what their customers (retailers) are charging the end customer? And wouldn't MSRP be a simple formula based on wholesale price and markup, and wouldn't the formula be run by the retailer, and even if there are some mysterious reasons why retailers need the manufacturer to calculate MSRP for them, why the heck would the end customer need to know or even be allowed to know the MSRP? Because MSRP is a bs term invented so that consumers can fancy themselves savvy while still getting taken for a ride

Toyota’s inventory shortage was even worse… FINALLY, my local Honda dealership got some inventory in January 2023 and I immediately ran down to buy a brand new 2023 Civic. Car prices were such that yes, I could have bought used, but the price difference wasn’t what it should be and the mileage on used has also been sky high. So I bought new. Outstanding video, have been involved in lending to car dealers in Florida for 40+ years. With prime rate increasing by 500 basis points the dealerships cost of borrowing has more than doubled. Example on a $1mm floor plan interest cost has increased $50k per year. In addition many lenders getting out of this business. As a double "whammy" cost of borrowing to consumer has more than doubled also. Be very careful in paying cash for a car at a "mom and pop" dealer as they can delay titling the vehicle to use the cash. Also they can sell vehicles "out of trust", not paying the lender for the vehicle release. Typically if loan on car lender will require that title be in new owners name before funding. Be careful if paying cash as if they go out of business before title transferred you can be out of luck.

Not only can they lower their prices, they're going to HAVE to lower their prices, or the banks will eventually do it for them. I've never been in the car business, but my parents owned a dry goods retail store for years, and taught me a few things about retail. The lesson that applies here is what my mother called "mistakes." For a given season she might choose and purchase 100 bolts of fabric. Inevitably, some will sell quickly, but a few would just sit there, with few if any customers interested in them. Once they sat a certain amount of time, they were put on sale, and the price would keep dropping until the fabric sold, even at a loss. Why? because each "mistake" was taking up a portion of the finite sales floor, and if they were not liquidated, each season would bring a few more "mistakes" to the floor, reducing space for fast movers, until eventually they would be a store full of "mistakes" that nobody wanted. These car dealers now have lots full of mistakes, and need to get rid of them ASAP, to make room for more popular cars and trucks. If they don't, they'll eventually be out of business, and the bank will send the vehicles to auction with no reserve.

You're right about people fixing their cars rather than buying new cars. I'm doing exactly that, I fix anything that goes wrong with my older model car and it's WAY CHEAPER than buying a new car. Parts are modular, you can replace anything on an older model car and make it run forever. Here's a good example of that, some years ago in the 90's I used to see this really old guy drive his 1954 Oldsmobile through town every day. I'm guessing that he liked the car and just kept on repairing it rather than replace it. Sadly it's our economic times that are forcing people to keep their cars longer, while new cars become more and more prohibitively expensive. I can't drop 50 thousand dollars on a new car, I just haven't got it and can't afford the debt, however I can afford to spend a few thousand dollars for a new engine if needs be, or a new transmission. We do what we have to do.

My Take: The "payment" buyers are mostly tapped out (for various reasons) so what is left are the "price" buyers (like me, who can pay cash). But trend/price-wise, most dealers are following the market down (i.e. they won't take enough discount now to sell the vehicle, and it is only going to get worse). Blame that (as you have said) on the sales managers, many of whom if they don't lower their "out the door" prices are going to find themselves out the door.

If you want to blame someone blame the democrats, the FED and the Treasury Department. The democrats pushed out so much money over the last 3 years that the Treasury Department had to print trillions of dollars to keep up with the giveaways. Then your dollars were worth less so inflation took off and the car manufacturers could raise prices and dealers could as well because their customers kept buying cars at higher and higher prices. Then the FED had to start raising interest rates to slow all the demand down. So now you have high priced cars and high interest rates. Well you got what you voted for. Enjoy it!!!

They do NOT make a Jeep that is worth $100,000 say nothing about $124,000, same with the Ford F 150's not worth $50,000. Let the dealer go out of business, they were the ones stupid enough to pay to much for a POS the manufacturer is asking way to much for, GREED!

What sucks, is at the end of the year, they have to include all the unsold vehicles as part of their assets and pay taxes on each car and truck. That means that dealerships are going to sell their inventory at a huge discount, in hopes of unloading as much as possible. If they survive, they'll go one additional quarter to sell corporate and county vehicles that are ordered through them, then probably go out of business at the end of that quarter.

I could care less how tough the dealers have it. I'm still seeing cars (Repos) with 3k miles on them still marked above MSRP or right at it. Talk about digging your own grave, theses dealers are 6 feet deep and still digging. You are correct lots are getting FULL even Honda lots have NEW Hondas in my area. Toyota has not got the memo yet that people can't afford 5k over MSRP even though they are trying to sell repos at or above new MSRP like it's a great deal.

I knew a small tote the note dealer. He charged whatever he had in the cars for his down payments. Didn’t borrow for inventory. Sold some junk but what used dealer doesn’t? Anyway these dealers see the prices tripling and decide to bet the farm on a mortgage for a new vehicle in every parking spot and I’m supposed to care they’re going out of business?

Had the dealers been smart and not greedy, they would have been banking or otherwise investing all of the rediculous markup money they had been making over the last few years so they could have sufficient cash on hand for when things dry up.

And yet, I'm still seeing ridiculous dealer markups.
