I have rust on fender on my 2000 Chevy Astro what's the steps for me to do I sand it down. To the bare metal but in the middle it's soft a little but when I feel behind the fender it's no hole or nothing but it's under even now do I need Bondo or what I don't know never did this before

rattle can master, my buddy built a basic motorcycle based on a wide glide, he had about 6 grand in it. rattle can painted the tins with Wal Marts best. It was sharp. looked like a nice customized wide glide with an S & S motor. sold it for 12 k. thanks, some people make it look like brain science.

Having done the same type of repair, I would like to share some advice: - Use an acidic rust neutralizer to get rid of the rust you couldn't sand off - Use a zinc protector spray before applying the filler (the filler is full of water) - Do not wet sand the body filler - Do not sand down the whole part to clear coat it, try to keep the repainted area small - After a week of so wet sand the whole piece with a 2000 sand paper then polish (the paint color will then be uniform)
@JouniKyyronen-nv1ep6 жыл бұрын
Michael Henriks yes filler and water no good

Only thing i don't agree is not to wet sand the body filler...

I think that's what I did wrong when repairing rust spots in my 2010 F150. I sanded it down Bondo primed wet sanded to get smoother finish painted and clear coat. for someone who's not a profession that came out pretty well looking!!! until 6 months later rust start the show through! now it's about a year later and it's getting worse. I wasn't sure what I did wrong but now I think I do.

This is a great cheap and cheerful repair for a car that you are trying to get another year or two out of.
@ad-dajjal71337 жыл бұрын
Good effort at home..But, you should remove all the rust first inside and outside ie remove the arch liner at least to do this.You have not removed any exterior parts and eventually the paint will flake from these areas.You have filled over the rust and have also used water over bare metal and filler that is porous.An acid etch before primer will also help to keep the rust at bay. You did an fantastic job with the tools at hand and have given many people really good knowledge on what you did,keep up the good work .

So a tiny bit of rust, in the end you did the whole wing that will stand out like a sore thumb
@joebmxx3 жыл бұрын
Great video for a quick temporary fix but a few things. 1. Always treat the bare metal with a rust inhibitor or zinc primer. 2. Your better of just spray the whole panel evenly with base coat to stop the blending showing through the laquer. 3. Once the laquer has hardened after 48hrs 1500grit wet and dry it till it's eggshell then bring back the shine with cutting compound & a polisher, it will come out like glass.

This video saved me 900 quid. I done this sort of thing simular to my car. Ok it's not as good as this but it looks 90% better than it did before. Thanks so much
@swektmaico5 жыл бұрын
The rust will be back sooner than later because it's not near gone. It's evened out, flattened and painted over. And the painting with both color and clear coat should be applied with large movements from off of the part and over it all and out again in a steady motion. Never small movements pressing and letting off the nozzle while directed onto what you're painting. The big problem here is usually the back side of the rust since the pores usually goes right through. I have found motorcycle chain grease in spray to be quite good in sealing existing rust and keeping it from growing. The inside should be cleaned with a steel brush or something to get the bare metal/rust exposed. Then sprayed with grease. And after some while maybe a spray with a rust protector keeping the grease from drying or getting washed off.
@jonjon90475 жыл бұрын
Rust treatment and primer prior to filler. Don’t use any water until you flat your final coat otherwise you risk trapping moisture and causing further corrosion. Don’t mask panel lines on the same plane - blend.
@bendude67485 жыл бұрын
You can get a ready painted new wing/fender for £95 delivered here in the UK ( not sure how much that is in USD ) but to me it’s just not worth bothering by the time you’ve bought the paint/bondo etc you’ve spent half as much if not more than a new one

Yes was just thinking the same thing . Also on a rust repair like this , the inside of the wing would need treated and filled to stop it rusting from from behind as that did not look like just surface rust, A quick fix that, that is all it is. Would be good for about 2 weeks, especially here in the UK

exactly! if i ever have old cars at work i remove the rust completely, use etch primer (eats in to the metal and not legal anymore for use cause it's highly toxic.) or i use a thick coat of hammerite, which i scuff up with some red scotch and paint it with a thick layer of paint (suspension parts) or i use undercoating (thick coat) this works really on the rear corners of the wheel fenders since they mostly rot away and make the bumper go loose. i do not recommend any spray cans since they spray really thin coats (or you would need to apply 4 to 5 coats to make it a bit thicker) but this only counts as actual rust repair for the parts that are not in eyesight.
