Witnessed this the morning of Feb 22 while going down I-40. The first bump I didn't see but heard and just assumed the truck had hit a pothole, since there are several on this stretch of road. After that, I looked up as he went under the second bridge and saw the SXS scrape. I did not expect it to almost be ripped off the trailer when going under that third bridge!

I am a former car hauler. This is exactly the sort of thing we worried about (I was hauling new cars almost exclusively) I haven't hauled a car in 30 years, but I still have my height stick. For those who didn't know and are guessing, the maximum height in the western states without a permit is 14'0" except in Colorado and Nebraska where it's 14'6". In most of the states in the central and eastern time zones, the maximum is 13'6". The carhaul driver MUST be sure their load is in conformity before departure, or exactly this sort of thing can happen. Also, the carhaul driver must be constantly on the lookout for unanticipated low obstacles (ice hanging from bridges, snowpack in combination with low bridges, tree limbs that are snow-weighted or even diseased, ANYTHING that can impact your load. Very stressful and injury-prone job, but I loved it!

Bit of Canadian content here. In the late 80’s or early 90’s I was dropping off a vehicle at CFB ( Canadian Forces Base ) Petawawa in Ontario Canada. It’s not uncommon when you have on a unique, or high dollar vehicle on to have passersby’s come over and ask questions, or comment about what your doing. Anyway I had to remove a couple of units, then reload them. I had just reloaded a Jaguar convertible, when I was approached by a woman. Typically if it’s a nice car you get comments like “ Hey, just drop that off at my house, or the likes. Anyway this woman had me in stitches when in her strong Newfoundland accent said as I raised the deck the Jag was on “ Oh, just let that car roll off on top of me. I’d just die for a car like that ! “ 😂 Thanks for making my day, Darlin’.

I’m just guessing, but at that point it might have been more dangerous for him to stop suddenly than for him to just bite the bullet and keep going until he can stop safely. If the vehicle was knocked loose from that, which it most certainly appears that it was, then if he stopped suddenly the momentum could carry it off and into the roadway injuring or killing someone.

@@42luke93 yes, there is a certain amount of impact that the driver may not be aware of at all. A side-swipe on a car is another one the driver will not feel up front, which is why it's a good idea to NOT tag along the side of a truck for a long time. Bridges on the interstates must meet minimum height requirements, and are often not marked as long as they do meet those minimums. I believe that in the eastern US, it's 13"6 and in the western US, it's 14" -- not sure where they switch though. That said, I've seen videos from drivers of car haulers who will talk about what height their vehicle is "today" and how they have to go out and measure and verify some bridges. _Edit:_ The heights I gave are the maximum heights for trucks in those areas. The bridges are taller than that.

If a bridge is unmarked yoru at fault. It's best to research your routes and stay on newier Interstate paths and avoid the cross-town lanes IMHO. This what i like about states like TX, most Interstate goes over so no bridges and in some case we have interstates bridges marked like 17-18ft tall

I saw this happen once with a truck pulling a mobile home, half a double wide I think, but anyway the guy slowed way down before he hit and I've never been able to decide if that made him smarter or dumber. The damage wasn't as bad but slowing down still didn't get him under.

The way dealerships are today is they’ll still want MSRP, give you a 6% interest rate, add on scratch and dent protection, interior rip coverage, and extended warranty, then tell you they can’t get parts because of covid and the UWA strike. When you call any of the 3…Stellantis, Ford, GM asking for a rental car, they’ll call you back 3 months later to ask you how your new $75,000 screw job is going. This is after the dealer stops answering the phone on day 3 without a vehicle.
