Would be nice if EVAP systems were fixed this easy. Most of the issues I run into are system leaks not valves. Now they are when the headaches begin even with a smoke machine they are a pain. Nice explanation of the working of the valves.

I had a evap code on my 06 Lincoln Zephyr everything that you mentioned was fine. I looked over the whole evap system and found that the problem was the plastic tube that goes between the charcoal canister and the gas tank had a hole in it. Replaced the plastic tube that 1A AUTO does not sale. 1A AUTO can not have ever part .

Can you explain how filling the tank up to the cap can make the fuel enter the evap system and damage it?

Yea Most common but it also might be a leak in the exhaust manifold or pipe and muffler then its a good thinking to check oxygen sensor . And coolant temperature sensor or fuel injection

Short version: If you want to pass OBD2 smog / inspection you cannot have a MIL (Check Engine Light) ON, and all of your OBD2 monitors must complete per the state in which you live and the model year of the car. California Emissions vehicles (as stated on you under hood emissions label) being the most rigorous. Long version: First off, the advice from a competent mechanic should be do not attempt to get a vehicle smog checked or Inspected (depending on where you live) if you have a check engine light (MIL) on for an OBD2 (MY 1996 or later) vehicle. Why? On OBD2 vehicles the MIL lights main purpose is to flag OBD2 non-compliance (tail-pipe and evaporative emissions problems), when the MIL light ON it is telling you the vehicle will not pass inspection. Don't waste your money getting it inspected with the MIL light ON. Obviously, the next step is to find out why the MIL light is on. You will need an OBD2 scan tool to find out what OBD2 codes (DTCs - Diagnostic Trouble Codes - which are standardized for emission related problems, one of the main reasons OBD2 was introduced) are stored which will identify the faulty system, circuit or component. It is possible to repair the vehicle and not have a MIL light and still not pass inspection. Why? The vehicle has not completed the ODB2 monitors, meaning some are still pending. So you may ask, what the hell is an OBD2 monitor? It is basically emission related routines the computer executes (required by EPA per OBD2) to ensure the emission systems are working properly per a specific set of conditions known as a drive cycle. When the vehicle is repaired, as per the MIL light codes, the mechanic will clear the DTCs which normally resets the monitors. Also, if you disconnect the battery to repair the vehicle the monitors will reset. The monitors look at the specific emissions related equipment on the vehicle and evaluated if they are working properly. Well you may ask, what do the monitors require in order to complete, how many are there and what are the drive cycle requirements? This information is sometimes hard to find from an OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer, like Ford or GM) but has to be available to the customer. Finding the information on-line (www) is sometimes difficult. For example, for a FORD OBD2 passenger vehicle the information is provided at www.motorcraftservice.com/freeresources/obd For each model year there is a PDF explaining monitor operation. Some monitors require multiple drive cycles, which is the same thing as saying multiple trips of a specific driving style or type (similar to city driving or highway driving). The premise of the video is to focus on a particular DTC pertaining to EVAP. Which granted is complex, but as complex would be the CAT monitor. Regardless, all monitors must complete (test good, with some exceptions for MY 1996 to MY 2000) before you can pass inspection.
