I am looking forward to the LR3 flattening the VW off-road. The terrain response on the LR has some very unique features to its benefit without locking diffs. For instance in rock crawl mode, the LR will apply a little braking to all 4 wheels so that each wheel will only slip a max of 5 degrees rotation. The onboard sensors will also 'lock' the braking if you are climbing a boulder to curtail any rearwards slippage, and HDC works in reverse gear just in case you chicken out.

VW doesn't sell anything like that first gen Touareg anymore, at least not in the U.S.. Stopped being able to get the rear locker after 2007, stopped being able to get the low gear transfer case with center lock after 2010. Also couldn't get air suspension after 2010. So yeah, only thing they're helping is weirdos like me who aren't scared of owning a 15 year old complicated German car that was difficult for VW technicians at the time to figure out since it featured a lot of new tech they weren't yet used to... Actually, I didn't need TFL's help for that. I bought a 2004 Touareg with the V10 TDI last year, which is similarly equipped with having air and rear locker like their V8 model. Except on the V10s, that was standard equipment. V8s it was optional. Not long after I fixed what was wrong with mine this spring and started driving it, TFL started doing their series, which has simply inspired me to try a little offroading of my own with it.

The whole auto industry should be watching TFL. Your methodical testing and subsequent parts breakage shows that "overbuilt" is being engineered out. Vehicles are made to be "just durable enough." I'll look for the vid I watched about it and post a link here. TFL even broke a drive shaft on an EcoBoost F150 with just the added power of a tuner. Just wanted to add: Tommy called the Touareg smaller and lighter... only part right. The Touareg is surprisingly heavy, as equipped likely close to 5300 lbs. The Ram Rebel is likely virtually the same, Touareg has better weight distribution and a shorter wheelbase, though. As the Moab video proved, it also has better approach and departure angles than the Rebel... My 2004 V10 Touareg tips the scales at a barely believable 5850 lbs... and size wise, it's not huge. Roman: "How the hell do I get down now?" Tommy: "Reverse"... Actually no. The best way to back down a steep offroad slope with a broken front driveline is to put the transfer case in high range and the automatic transmission in drive instead of reverse. Backing down a steep slope without a center locked functional 4wd system very often ends with a roll over (I've seen it far too many times). The issue is the front brakes, by design, are applied far, far too much compared to the rear brakes when reversing so the front tires lock up and you can't steer (as seen in this video). Making the problem even worse, the steep slope makes the weight transfer to the rear (and off the front) and placing the transmission in reverse, even at idle, makes the rear wheels try to continue to rotate while the front easily (and dangerously) locks up. If you instead put the gear selector in drive on a steep enough slope where it would normally roll backwards in drive, this will behave like adding extra rear braking power. As a result you can back down without locking up the front axle which means you can steer! If you find the front wheels are still locking up, a very slight amount of throttle (in drive) will increase the rear braking effect and you can find the right balance point where all 4 wheels are braking at their limit of traction. You can treat the gas pedal like rear brakes and the brake pedal as front brakes so using both you can find the balance point where all 4 wheels are braking at the limit of traction (although most of the time just idling in drive is all you need). Note the reason low range often doesn't work is even at idle there can be too much resistance to rolling backwards and you can end up with the rear tires skidding instead of the front (unless it is an extremely steep slope with good traction, then sometimes leaving it in low range combined with idling in drive can work well) We've used this technique many times in our local off-road club and you'll find it works extremely well, especially on very steep slopes. These conditions can be almost impossible to back down using reverse and the vehicle will often, with the front tires locked up, slide sideways and roll (not good). Another related tip: With transfer cases that use manual levers to switch from low to high range, it can be difficult to switch when you're stuck on a steep slope like this. Make sure you are in a position to roll backwards a bit, place the transmission in neutral and while easing off on the brakes enough to very slowly start to roll, very quickly push the transfer case lever all the way from low, through neutral, and into high. You don't need to roll very far and an inch or two of motion is typically enough if you are quick with the lever. If you do get the transfer case stuck in neutral (grinding if you try to move it into low or high range) turn the engine off (to stop the gears spinning) and then try switching into low or high range again. On a totally different topic, you might find it easier to drive up (and down) slopes like this with the tire pressure lowered more than shown in this video.

I wont deny that the Touareg is a beast of a crossover, but I don't think people are giving the Ram a fair shake. Something had to give when it came to the Ram. A rock got lodged in between the front driver tire and the cab, the front passenger wheel was fully loaded against a ridge of rocks, and rear was bucking sending shocks through the whole drive line on an almost 3 ton vehicle. I would be shocked if a U-Joint or CV didn't snap from that. If anything, the lesson to be learned here is that a good call from a spotter can make all the difference as well as there really being merit to the saying "Slow as possible, fast as necessary". All being said, really enjoyed this video. Truly real world!
@denisleblanc45065 жыл бұрын
I have never driven up that terrain but when I have driven up steep hills with loose rocks I have never relied on wheel speed for forward progress. If your wheels start to spin, you back up and try another line. I've learned that slow and go wins the day. Loose rocks and dirt is very treacherous because some rocks don't move. When a tire spins up and encounters that rock it imparts tremendous shock to the driveline. Remember you are multiplying the torque to the wheels by a factor of almost 3! But this torque still has to go through the same driveshaft and joints to the tires. Add oversize grippier tires and it's a recipe for disaster if you're not careful. I was told a long time ago that you can apply tremendous torque to a shaft by gradually increasing the torque and it won't break. Apply or release the same amount of torque instantly and it will almost always break. All manufacturers say you should only lock the differentials on loose terrain or risk damaging the drivetrain. Automatic transmissions can also aggravate this already dangerous situation because they will allow wheels with less traction to spin up way faster than manual transmissions and when that spinning tire encounters an imbedded unmovable rock the driveline shock is even more pronounced. The only times wheel speed is your friend is deep mud or snow and this is because you will never get these sudden driveline shocks because everything is wet or icy. Dry terrain like you drove up is completely different. No matter how hard you try to convert a Rebel into a Powerwagon, you'll never have the strength of a HD driveline. Maybe that's why the Powerwagon has a locking front differential. To prevent any wheel from spinning up in front when traction is lost. You spin 4 wheels or none. In the Rebel, the front diff is open. So if one tire has traction and the other spins, it actually spins twice as fast (roughly) as the rear tires magnifying the shock effect. Hammer down Roman is not the driving technique appropriate for this terrain and could probably break the some piece of the driveline on most modified (bigger higher traction tires) rigs.

Denis LeBlanc good advice my friend.
@shitloveaduck5 жыл бұрын
That and a rock actually lifted with the tire and wedged in the wheel well. Most trucks would have broken at this point, regardless of bigger tires or not. I don’t disagree with you, but you are wayyyy overthinking this. The hill was so steep that any time they didn’t use momentum they sat still and dug a hole using the style you mention. There is always a bigger picture. The camera doesn’t show it well but they were in a very steep section.
@TFLcar5 жыл бұрын
Totally agree. But there is just no way to take this hill gently, and we've tried it with just about every new off-roader out there. It is just wayyy to steep for as slow as possible...
@denisleblanc45065 жыл бұрын
@@TFLcar I believe you, however, momentum and high wheel speed are different things. I now it's difficult to keep speed up in such big rocks, but goosing the throttle is really hard on the driveline. Maybe the traction controls are forcing you to goose the throttle? Trying to overcome their application? Like I said, I never tried your hill. BTW, there's a reason rock crawlers often have 1 ton axles or more and super low gears and it isn't only because of the monster tires.
@shitloveaduck5 жыл бұрын
Denis LeBlanc - you need to be there, on that hill, and in those conditions before you can learn the flaws in your theory. Like I say, it works sometimes in some places, but that much dirt mixed with the rocks and that dry, you just spin at any speed so you have to actually maintain a level of wheel spin. I know you will have some comeback to this, but I’m not sure you have exactly encountered these conditions. Rock is heavy in there fro pea gravel all the way up to 15” rocks. It doesn’t pack down so that you can maintain momentum at 30 plus degrees. You can barely stop the vehicle without sliding backwards and in some areas you just can’t stop. I’ve been in that situation and sliding backwards, the only way I stopped it and made it to a point where the ground was firm enough for me to stop is by building wheel speed and pulling myself up the hill. You can see it on KZbin, I have seen it in real life, where a vehicle gets away on a driver and slide backwards out of control because the wheels can’t bite and they panic( or their truck is broken) and fly backwards down the hill. Unless you are there you can’t say exactly what they need to do and have to learn and grow and maybe learn there is more than just one way, your way?

Just on the recovery point, the Touareg original one is designed to sheer open at the thinnest part before putting the vehicle structure at risk. I do see that the recovery eye you are using is not the original one, i.e. does not have this feature. It can handle off-road recoveries, but it is better to carry a second eye and use both points in tandem via a bridle and have safety straps to prevent projectiles. I would avoid snatch recoveries if possible, but that applies to any other vehicle also. Another side note, there is one disadvantage to running oversize tyres on a Treg with air suspension, if the suspension fails, you will not be able to move the car as the bump stops are not enough to overcome the larger wheel diameter. With the standard tyre size you can still very gently drive and steer whilst on bump stops. Over-sized tyres then contact badly with the wheel arches making the vehicle immobile.

Once I crossed a river in it, water went all the way up to the bottom of the windscreen for a moment, but the only thing that broke in it was the mount for my front licence plate, as I hit the water a bit too fast going in. Beast of a car. 300k km done on it, still refuses to let me down. :)

Not surprised by the outcome for the Ram. You guy's honestly beat the heck out of them for our benefit, unlike the fake cough..cough "Car Wow" comparisons.

Gosh! Who would've believed a 2004 VW would be such a tough machine where it really is out its comfort zone. Your videos are also great as it shows you the reality of what a car/ truck actually can cope with. 👍

Doesn't matter who the vehicle it was made by the story goes as follows high wheel speed and the sudden abundance of traction is what broke the part
@s0rc35 жыл бұрын
I was thinking this as well but if you re-watch that part a few times those wheels aren't spinning in the air and then hitting the ground or something, I just can't see why they all of a sudden got enough traction to break the transfer case. The rebels have a better transfer case than most of the Rams which have the electronic auto transfer case, although maybe that one would have slipped instead of breaking... ah, the driveshaft broke, I'm dumb should have waited until the end.
@macmurfy2jka5 жыл бұрын
Michael Smith wasn’t even spinning that fast, though. All the wheels looked like they at least had a little traction. Honestly watching the video i was expecting it to be the front dif. On IFS the CV joints or the difs are usually what breaks from what ive seen. Driveshafts usually only pop when they’re damaged, at an extreme angle or too short. Considering the trucks IFS, the last two cannot be the case as the dif doesn’t move. From the sound of things, it may have been poorly welded. If they blew up a CV joint, I would be inclined to agree here.

To all the FCA naysayers, things happen when you're wheeling. This could have been any brand. Fact is the truck was doing things Wrangler Rubicons were meant to do, and all happening above 10,000ft elevation! Didn't TFL break a Raptor driveshaft back in the day?? Just saying. That Touareg sure is epic though, what a shocker! Put the pedal down Tommy, she just keeps climbing!!

I’ve broke a transfer case before, easy to do when you spin tires than gain grip again quickly

Nice video. I have a few considerations: 1) In situations like this, is better to disable the Traction Control in order to allow more spinning of the wheels. I bet the Touareg would not open the diff in doing so 2) Real recovery points are a MUST 3) ALLWAYS carry a good recovery kit (straps, tools, etc.) when off-roading. That small plier is not going to help much 3) In trails like that, a winch is a necessity 4) Never EVER stay close on the side or the back of the car, when accelerating in a rocky surface like that. A rock may fly and hit you hard.

I find these FCA bashing posts hilarious. I guess I must be different from the average consumer, breaking a driveshaft or a u-joint is just part of offroading. No big deal, part of the fun is breaking it, upgrading it so it won't break again then going back out and thrashing on it even harder. Blaming trail damage on FCA quality is just absurd.
