Great comparo Tommy! They both look very capable under some quite extreme circumstances. Like the fact that Jeep has some good aftermarket protection options. Still, for under $5 Grand, the VW shines!
@einfelder82624 жыл бұрын
@Helicopter Dad You mean the Jeep is unreliable, or did you miss the part where the air suspension failed? That could have been ugly if reversing to level ground was not an option, or if the failure resulted in the air escaping. The Touareg has already outlasted a few million Jeeps.

@Helicopter Dad I'm not a Touareg apologist at all, I've owned a Grand Cherokee and it was the worst car I've owned. Do you think Ford will be able to match the Wrangler in mod-ability?
@m-at-the-w1424 жыл бұрын
All the mods and press for the jeeps are cool, and don't get me wrong, they have the cool, classic look, but I own a Touareg because it's an all-rounder. It's just as capable as the JGC off road (even 12 years later in my case), it's just as luxurious, it's got about the same interior dimensions for utility, and it's even better than the JGC when you factor in that it can tow more and handles better when you want to spirited driving. To get that level of versatility from a JGC, you need to buy 2 jeeps, a track-hawk, and a trail hawk.

This is the comparison I’ve been looking for. I have a 2005 Touareg on 32” KO2 that I paid $3200 for and every time I take it out people can’t believe what it can do. Awesome review the Trailhawk Grand is almost a mirror match of the Touareg 14 years later.

Solid video! I have/had both vehicles in the video: quite some years ago I had the 2009 Touareg T2 with the V6 3.0L TDI, Firestone Destination AT's, and the same wheels as the Touareg in the video. Having taken it offroad aplenty in southwest AZ, I can attest to its offroad capability and onroad luxury. It was quite the porker though! Just wish I could've added some custom underbody protection and kept it... Interestingly, I have a 2017 WK2 Trailhawk with the Hemi now. Very similarly setup to @grandhemihawk's with the AT3W's and rock rails (Chief Products). The WK2 is built on a Mercedes-derived frame, so that's why it has virtually zero NVH and is perfect for long jaunts on the highway. The rear electronic limited slip diff isn't an autolocker, per se, although someone from the forums has connected an OBD2 scanner and found the tech details about what's going on with the rear e-LSD when in different modes and in 4LOW. It will indeed "lock" the diff, so it performs the same function in specific modes (4LOW MUD and ROCK). If I had to go back to a cheap offroader, I'd opt for the same V8 Touareg T1 with the mystical rear diff locker, even with the scary german repair prices! Great buy, @TFLCar!

@aaronmartinez97934 жыл бұрын
For those that stumble by this. The lowest end system is quadratrac 1. This is essentially an all wheel drive system with no center lock or low range mode. Every wheel gets brake assist traction control. Quadratrac 2 adds a Low range mode, center lock, and again brake assist traction control all around. Quadradrive2 is the highest end option with a low range option, center lock, rear “electronic limited slip differential” which functions as a LSD on the road and it locks electronically when it detects wheel slip. This is mechanical and the rear locks like a true locker. The front gets brake assisted traction control too which can in certain circumstances be almost as good as a locker. The downside to the ELSD and traction control is that it takes some getting used to off road. You have to actually let the wheels slip a bit for the power to be diverted to the slipping wheels. On the rocks it can be a little nerve wracking but I’ve been through some hairy shit no one thought I’d be able to do.
@tallll704 жыл бұрын
So the highest option does indeed deliver power through elsd on rear axle, just front is only abs traction
@aaronmartinez97934 жыл бұрын
@@tallll70 right, I believe the rear axle is also able to be used with brake assisted traction control, but I don't know that for sure. In some situations such as on road during an accident, I believe it can.

All these years later and the VW Touareg is finally being given it’s due not just for being pricy to maintain, but as the high caliber, highly sophisticated, and timeless vehicle that it really is. It’s also clearly stood the test of time. The exterior may be bland, but I’d say it’s elegant, unassuming, tirelessly built to the best standards available, and also has aged very well. It also sports a Bentley grade interior - everything from the watch-faced chrome trimmed gauges, the yacht-inspired steering wheel and gear selector, to the industrial design which has more then stood the test of time, validated the Touareg is a brilliantly designed benchmark that’s arguably better than its higher priced, but not as well built, German and English brethren of the time. By the way, that JGC is based on the last generation MB ML platform - it’s German twin, but the interior on this one is cut rate v. the ML (it’s substantially cheaper). Touareg is a classy, sophisticated, elegant over engineered world greats which will be a collectors item someday. The JPC is a mass market SUV, and that’s fine, but I don’t think Ferdinand PIech would have signed off on it in 2003 >< Great video and thanks for continuing to celebrate the VW Touareg like nobody else in media has really ever done in America. I know some mid-level heads in Wolfsburg who love this series.

The Touareg has got to be one of the coolest cars on the road, but only to a very niche audience. In order to own this car and really enjoy it, you'd really have to appreciate the little known and subtle details that set it apart. Seems like you're one of those people. Despite all of the nightmares that mine has given me with maintenance costs, it's still my favourite car on the road. Most people would think that it's a well equipped Tiguan. I'd like to put antique plates on mine someday. Sadly, I'll be going to flight school in a year's time (coincidentally, I bought mine from a fighter pilot), so I'll be putting it in storage for a while. Too costly to own on a student budget.

Standing the test of time means not only holding its own, but against much more modern cars which is likely its greatest accompaniment ever. Especially since that was the very first thing all of its detractors complained about back when the car was new. Its good to see, at least in this case, that they were wrong.

It is only meant to get you unstuck and only adds like 1/4 inch but robs all suspension flex. Also, fuggin send it, man, too slow on some parts! The air suspension on touaregs was light years ahead of its time. It not only has 5 selectable heights but also dampening control. Non selectable modes include rollover protection, addtl dampening + lowering at high speeds (100 & 120 MPH), and if you open the hood in off road mode, she'll kneal down to make it easier to access the motor :)

Fyi it lowers at 90mph and 125 mph. I have the exact same Touareg as in this video, but silver and only 50k miles , Florida car.

You are wrong about the ML w164. We have in Europe ML's with Off road Engineering Package which consists in Low range, center and rear lockers, levels of road air suspension (11.8 inch stock tyres) and skid plates for the engine and gearbox. Actually I would say it's even better than the Touareg because it's a little smaller, lighter and has better angles: 34 attack and 31 departure. 3L diesel engine with 500Nm torque from 1600Nm coupled with a 7+2 gearbox. You can even find some rare V8 diesel engines on theese beasts which would be unstoppable! It's around 8000 USD for a 2006 -2008 model.

Great video. However, incorrect info on the Jeep drive system, QuadraDrive II. ELSD stands for Electronic Limited Slip Differential, not Electronic LOCKING Rear Differential. Also, the QuadraDrive II ELSD on the current (2011-2020) WK2 body style is found ONLY on the rear. The front uses an open differential and and a less expensive brake-based wheel locking to distribute front power right to left and minimize (but not prevent) wheel-spin. True QuadraDrive II (rear AND front ELSD) was only found on the 2005-2010 WK series body style. Jeep claims you’ll never miss the front ELSD in 99.9% of situations, and I suppose that’s true if you mostly drive on-road and never in snow or gravel, but the reality is that it was a cost saving measure for Jeep to eliminate the front ELSD. In true traction critical situations, the WK system was absolutely superior and even in non-critical situations, the tank-like no-wheel-spin crawl capability for the WK is inspiring compared to the WK2. I’ve owned both variants in QuadraDrive II (actually owned a YR 2000 with QuadrDrive I as well) and can attest that the WK version of the QuadraDrive II was the best GC drive system ever made. My WK QDII even went to 225K miles without a single driveline issue. My current WK2 is more comfortable and has more tech toys, but will be my last Jeep GC if they don’t give it back the drive system it deserves. The air suspension is also horrible riding in Off-Road 2 - I’d never check that box again. But that’s another story.

I have a Jeep Gladiator rubicon on 35’s and sometimes I’ll trick my off road groups (mainly Taco’s) and decide to bring my 2005 Touareg v8 with rear locker and 32” Ko2’s and just embarrass them. Plus nothing beats the sound that 4.2l makes when you get on it

@@scotturich your toureg doesn’t embarrass any Tacoma’s lmao

If you put a Quaife (or Peloquin, I have one in my `09 GTI) Limited-Slip in the front of the Touareg it would help the traction control system immensely. No clutches to wear out. Both have a lifetime warranty (last I looked). The problem with the Quaife style of LSD is that they require both wheels to have some resistance (i.e. traction) and if one of the wheels is in the air or on ice they still act like a open differential. This is where the brake based traction control comes to the rescue. When the traction control system applies the brakes to the wheel in the air it will cause the LSD to do it's thing and the whole off road obstacle becomes much smoother and less damage prone. The Ford Raptor has a Quaife for the front diff I believe.
