More of a 3D render than photography. But the client gets what the client wants.

Car is lit from the side but it's in shadow, that makes the whole thing look photoshopped to me.

I know this may sound very vague, but i just upgraded my camera to a sony A7iii and i want to get out there and do some light painting. I also have a standard light stick to provide the painting. As a general rule of thumb, is it good to light paint step by step? For example; 1. dark base exposure 2. 'high pass' of the car to light up the upper areas, bonnet, roof, trunk etc. and also to provide light on the 'horizon' of the body lines to separate the car from the background 3. mid pass, follow the bodylines of the car throughout the middle of the car 4. low pass 5. wheels 6. other areas you want to show off? Hope this makes sense!

In my opinion the car looks like it has been pasted into the scene. he goes to such length of making the shadow a little fuzzy with a special brush, but fails to read the lighting situation that is already present in the scene? that's a pretty big error in my opinion. With a soft shadow it might not look as dramatic, but a lot more realistic. The shadow aside, it was a good video, reminded me that I need to dodge and burn more when I work on classic cars.

That's fair, but I do think there is almost always going to be somewhat of a copy and pasted look to a lot of light painting - I did a separate image without the background and it has a similar effect. And it's not necessarily something that I want to hide from the viewer as such. For example, those light streaks tell the story of how the vehicle was illuminated. And the shadow, although not entirely accurate for the environment, would be more than easily achievable in that setting when light painting a vehicle.

I see, so you mean to say, it could have been light painted in that setting, and the shadow could have been achieved with the technique. That's a fair point. I guess to a photographer that makes sense, you light the environment one way, and the car another. When you look at it from the point of view of someone who doesn't know light painting, or even photography in general, it becomes surreal though. I feel like to the general consumer it isn't important how the picture was created, just that it looks as good as possible in the end. Most people probably don't think about how you got that car to the location and lit it. They want to believe that it's one photo right there on location. That's my experience anyway :)

To be fair the average Joe is not even going to notice that the shadow is out. Only us photographers with an better understanding of light will think somthing is odd about it. Also its easy to spot in hindsight having viewed this video.

Hello Peter, I would agree that the average Joe wouldn't be able to tell that the shadow is "wrong". However, I think that he would still be able to tell that something is not right with the picture. They might not be able to put their finger on it, but I do give the general public enough credit to be able to sense when something is off. Maybe I am giving them too much credit though :)

I've been shooting cars for almost a year and generally shooting for 10 years, and looking at the composition with a non-critical eye, the shadow doesn't bother me. One might notice that something's off, but the brain tricks you into focusing more on the contrasts and the color in this composition, which makes most people adore the image instead of nitpicking. Not that I'm trying to take away your point, but just saying that it's not something one sees without going into analyzing mode.

I'm a big fan of Dominic's work and the cars he shoots. The way he shoots with certain effects makes the cars look truly stunning! Please can we have more reviews of his work in the future
