We bought used. 2014 Navigator L 4x4 with HD Tow Package. 140k miles and $15k OTD. Vehicle has extensive service records and a damn near 10 page CARFAX. I do all my own maintenance. If it lasts us 10 or so years, I’ll consider it money well spent

They will. I follow Audi Dealer who I've yet to do business with (they've been charging funny prices on cars even pre pandemic) So many prestige trims now sitting. Top trims were having issues with production because of the tech and chips in them but now its caught up. Even top trims make sure you ask dealer for build code as many things are still omitted, and they don't give you the build credit like they should.

The average person might not know but car sales men are the perfect people to negóciate with if you know what the real cost of everything is. I once told a salesmen no about 15 times and because it’s not the deal I wanted about a week an a half later he called me back and says “hey I managed to get the deal you wanted.” After a week of not selling anything or very little trust me they’ll be looking for you😂

Just because a dealership has a car for 20,000 it doesn’t mean the car is worth that. A lot of people just agree to any deal cuz they’re desperate to get a new car or fell in love with the car they test drive and now will pay anything just to get it. Don’t be that person. Be patient.

Yeah look out of state, Jeff. Someone just posted they bought a 2023 Toyota for $1700 under msrp. A Seattle dealer is advertising they’re selling at msrp now. Keep looking around, decide on the exact make/model/trim you want and use your leverage. Do not walk onto a lot. Call them and ask for their best “out the door” price. Get multiple quotes. Pick the lowest two and go head to head to see if either one will budge a little more. Its a game and you’re the one to call the shots.

Here in California Used car prices haven’t dropped at all. Some fixed price dealerships will sell their new cars at MSRP and make you feel you’re getting a good deal. When actually you would be spending 2,000 to 3,000 over invoice price ! Depending on the vehicle can be even more…

Don't be afraid to walk away. I was at a Ford dealer in 2006 and I wanted to buy a new, plain F150, V8, automatic and this young kid salesman told me all they had were jacked up, big tires, 4 speed, stick-on - the - floor pickups. I said: "Ok, I'll go check with another dealer." Then he said: "Oh, look, we have a regular pickup just like you want over here".

I typically go to five or more dealerships and search online. There’s also websites that’ll look for you. All you have to do is put in the radius of how far you’re willing to drive! That’s what I did and found a super good deal. The local dealerships were stubborn I guess because people weren’t negotiating.

Dealers are still not really lowering prices. Saw a brand new F-150 limited yesterday priced at $82000 and 10 years ago, you could buy a brand new limited supercrew F-150 for 40-45k. Most used cars are overpriced by 10-30%. Used Mercedes GLS450 (2019) with 60k miles selling for 45-50k when they should be about 35k

The only used cars in Japan that are selling for peanuts are Volvo S40’s. Nothing about them is cheap to fix and only dealers can do most repairs. I probably spent more on annual maintenance costs since 2008 then I originally paid for the car when I bought it new.

@@fazole - Japanese car maintenance here is not as bad as Volvo or Mercedes, but they can still get you. cars must be inspected every 2-years by law. The term is shaken (sha 車 ken 検), a policy that pressures people to buy new cars and creates a steady cash flow to the government in taxes and to all the businesses authorized to inspect and repair cars. On tip of this is annual road tax that funnels a lot of cash to local governments. The bigger the car, the higher the tax.

Agree. But. Sometimes life happens. My mom was widowed at 40 years old, no family around and not a us citizen. She had to bust her rear end to raise teenagers on her own, keep the lights on and pay off my dad’s medical bills (no life insurance). My dad was her mechanic and they always paid cash for used cars. When the family car died in our driveway, she walked to the nearest dealership. She had to. No cell phones or Carvana in those days. But she’s bought only 3 new cars over the last 30 years. She drives them about 10 years or until her grandkids say “ok that’s enough Granny, your car is not safe” 😆 God is good. She’s retired comfortably and just bought her “last new car”, a Honda.

It’s in the US. The core cause is because of inflation, we have aggressively increased interest rates. People here cannot afford to buy a car on borrowed money increasing inventory. Also, the strong dollar overall helps with energy costs from abroad.

I saw a report from PwC about a year ago that talked about this, and it's about on schedule in terms of coming down from peak pricing. Another 6 months to a year and things may be back to normal if not better than before.

Yes, if you have a garage to DIY it in. You can buy a nice dual action (DA) polisher, pads, clay bars, ceramic coating, etc for around $350-400. Opt for the harbor freight Baur DA and you can get it down to $250-300 total. A leisurely 3hrs or so on a Saturday AND Sunday and you'll have completed a job that would cost $1,200 to $2,000 at a professional detail shop and it will look 95% as good.

They do go down in Jan and Feb. Think about it ... less people wanting to spend money equals better deals. Also, current rate ofnpeople paying late on loans is the highest in 20 years so theres going to be repo deals.

4 months ago in August of 2022, I sold my 2011 F150 XL5.0 v8 with 8’ bed. It had 160k miles and I sold it for $7,300. Good conditions. Half of my friends said it was too cheap and the other half said it was too expensive

That’s very very cheap. That’s a truck that can almost instantly turn it into a business. It can haul and is reliable. I prefer older f-150s, but it’s impossible to find them. Some early 2000 Tundras are selling for more than original value because they don’t die. That f-150 still has a 150k miles left for it.

In Pennsylvania they're still asking 20k for a Nissan versa and like 26.5 for a civic. Nothing's gotten better.

Scotty is correct. My brother is involved in the car shipping industry. They are barely working because new cars are not selling, so they don't need to move cars out to the dealers. Our local dealerships have gone from having a half empty lot to being very full. I drive by every day, the same cars and trucks are just sitting.
