This drum tutorial is for Car Radio by Twenty One Pilots. Nothing super tricky in here except the unusual hi-hat pattern in the verses. This lesson breaks it all down though so you can practice it up and play along to the song!

+LearnSomeDrums haha it's fine. I paused it a couple times with the crashes part at the end, which helped a lot. But about 1:43ish is where I can't really fully get a grip on what you're doing :P

It's literally just an off beat hi hat pattern, and just quarter notes. very simple. Beats 1 and 2 are snare and kick together, the &'s are an open hi hat. It's exactly the same as the beginning of thier song "Guns for Hands"

This video is amazing, we have to do solos for music class so I chose to do car radio, and this video has helped sooooooooo much, I can't thank you enough, but my teacher told us today that apparently she wants printed sheet music to follow while we play, is there any chance you could link to a PDF of the sheet music? I was wondering what crash cymbal do you use? Also, do you have any tips on how to reduce the snare buzz noise when playing the toms?
@LearnSomeDrums
@LearnSomeDrums 7 жыл бұрын
+The Lost Drummer The 16" HHX evolution is my favourite crash so it'll be that one for sure! In terms of snare buzz, keep your bottom head tight and also your snare wires fairly tight. Then muck around with the top head tuning because usually the buzz is just the resonant frequency from one of your other drums setting off the snare wires. Changing up the tuning should change up the point at which your snares buzz. Hopefully that does the trick!

Maybe someone said this already, but when you play it slow, you play it differently than when you play it fast. When you are talking about the "sizzle" part and you do it slow, you have the hi hat open when the left hand strikes. When you play it fast, the hi hat is open on a right hand strike. It's a bit confusing. I couldn't get what I wanted from the slow part but could hear it and play it from the second part. The fast part. Just something I noticed.

could i ask something about that part?I can't understand if you are trying to say that I need to move my left foot with my right one or I have to move first my right foot and then my left one (sorry for my bad English but I'm Italian hahaha)
@jasondelaguila8461
@jasondelaguila8461 7 жыл бұрын
Karma the beat is sort of separated by the kick and snare. I don’t know music but this is how I think of it: “K” will represent the kick drum (right foot). R and L represent the hand patterns. K RLRL(hi hat), R(snare), LRLR(hi hat), K RLRL(hi hat), R(snare), LRLr(hi hat). The little “r” at the end is when you lift your left foot to open the hi hat. That’s the “sizzle” part. To answer your question: the sizzle is when you lift your left foot and strike with your right hand on the hi hat. Your English is good by the way. Unless I totally missed your point. Good luck.

@LearnSomeDrums 8 жыл бұрын
If you bring your hi hat foot down with your kick drum foot, then it should be "up" or sizzling on the "and" of the beat which is where you want it. Try playing all 8th notes with your right hand on the hats and only sizzling every second one for practice.

+QuantumParadoxx Just hanging out haha They take the overtones out of the drum so it doesn't ring as much. I fold them over so that there's more weight but not too much surface area if that makes sense. Moon gel or O-rings do a similar job so experiment and see what sound you like!

Also, is it worth it to get ahead sticks? Ik you dont usually play heavier stuff from your videos but I play a mixture of lighter fast beats and hard hitting heavy beats.
@LearnSomeDrums
@LearnSomeDrums 8 жыл бұрын
Yeah it depends. I have a set of Ahead sticks that I never use because I prefer the feel of wood and at the moment I'm using 2Bs so I get a lot of mileage out of each set. If you break your sticks a lot maybe Aheads are worth considering, but they definitely feel a bit different in the hands.

You can leave it out if you want, but definitely try working up to it. Practice playing 1 and 2 and 3 and 4 and on the hi hats and bringing your left foot down on 1 2 3 4, that should help you get sizzles on the "and". Once you're comfortable (maybe after a week?) add in the bass drum and the rest.
