@charlesleclerc_ferrari
@charlesleclerc_ferrari 3 жыл бұрын
But why don't you just use the inverse gamma in the VRayBitmap? It does the same thing as you just did in Photoshop, but it doesn't actually "bake in" the gamma value, so you can change it inside Max.
@JonasNoell
@JonasNoell 3 жыл бұрын
Hi, are you referring to the part when the sun was painted in? When you adjust the gamma of the hdri you would be changing the brightness relationships between all pixels. Basically you are just increasing the contrast between the values overall which is not the same as to locally paint in a super bright sun for the main light and leaving all the other pixels untouched. In my opinion HDRI should never be gamma adjusted and if you have the feeling that you need to then there is most likely something wrong with the quality of the hdri itself.
@charlesleclerc_ferrari
@charlesleclerc_ferrari 3 жыл бұрын
@@JonasNoell I'm not sure if technically it's the same thing, but to me it seems it has the same effect. Decreasing the inverse gamma makes the bright parts brighter, the dark parts darker, and it also makes the shadows sharper. Increasing does the opposite so you can use the same HDRI image and change the scene from overcast to sunny and vice versa. But again: I'm not a professional just a hobbyist, so maybe this is not the best practice in the world, but it works for me just fine.
@JonasNoell
@JonasNoell 3 жыл бұрын
@@charlesleclerc_ferrari Hi, well it depends on what your goals are: From a technical view the HDRI should be an accurate representation of the lighting conditions on the scene and should not be altered if shot correctly. If you play with the gamma you are increasing or reducing the contrast over all pixels, thus altering or falsifying the captured data. For example you will increase the contrast which will make your lights and shadow stronger but at the same time you are also oversaturating all your colors including your sky. You will get a result for sure but it won't be any accurate representation of the lighting conditions from the actual scene. If, however, you are satisfied with the result there is no rule that prevents you from using this workflow. As long as you know the advantages and disadvantages everything is allowed! :-) If you look at it from a pure technical view however it would be a malpractice. That's why in the workflow I presented I only fixed the actual issue which are the clamped hightlights, while leaving the rest untouched. Nonetheless as I also said in the video I would anyway only use accuarate and technical flawless HDRI's, this way you wouldn't need to do any of this stuff anyway!

Hehe no problem, yes the animation is basically just after finishing the shading for the whole scene to place some cameras and render it our. I didn’t do some shot-specific lighting in this case, it’s all just one lighting/shading setup.

@JonasNoell

Do you get a correct alpha channel? If yes then the exposure is most likely set wrong. Then you need to add a physical exposure correct in your environment (press the 8 key) and put in a correct exposure value for example an EV of +9.

Hi Sir, I have one HDRI problem, which is whenever I upload HDRI into my VrayBitmap, the preview of HDRI shown in Material Editor is way too over exposed. Even tho I have already set the "Color Space Transfer Function" into "Inverse Gamma" with a value of 1.0, RGB Primaries under the "RGB Color Space" have set to "sRGB Primaries" as well. Is there any solution to solve this kind of problem? (The HDRI I had uploaded into VrayBitmap were all downloaded from HDRI Haven.) Ps: I have tried to lower down the Overall multi value way down to 0.01 in order to solve this over exposed problem. With the default value of 1, the preview of HDRI shown in Material Editor is still way too over exposed.
@JonasNoell
@JonasNoell 2 жыл бұрын
Ok, that is strange as so far all the HDRI from HDRIHaven that I tested worked fine in that regard. Can you try to use the same HDRI that I was using in the tutorial (Piazza San Marco) and see if you still get a weird result? If yes then there must be something wrong with your settings. Note that there are 2 settings: Overall and Render Multi. Both of them should be at 1. The Multiplier of the V-Ray Domelight should also be at 1.
@victorchang7213
@victorchang7213 2 жыл бұрын
@@JonasNoell Yes sir, I uploaded the "Plaza San Marco" HDRI into the VRayBitmap, the preview of HDRI shown in Material Editor is seems ok though. But when I tried to upload other HDRI, such as "Pond Bridge Night" from HDRI Haven (Poly Haven). Its preview was overexposed again, especially the sky. Originally, the color is in Deep Blue color, but it shown up as daytime light blue color at the material editor preview. The whole scene seems to be in daytime mode, which it should not be, because it is a night time HDRI. This problem only seems to be happened at the preview of the Material Editor. *The Overall and Render Multi. are remained default, at the values of 1 respectively. The Multiplier of the V-Ray Domelight also be at 1. When I try to render a view with this "Pond Bridge Night" HDRi with every value remained default (All values are set at 1 respectively). The background is shown normal, no color/ gamma error, everything shown up as the default preview of HDRI.

@JonasNoell
@JonasNoell 2 жыл бұрын
@@DaT_Animations You can use the Groundprojection in the VRayBitmap. I wouldn't recommend this workflow though as I think it's not well done in V-Ray currently. I normally build my custom projection/lighting setup which I describe in the full course and handles this issue much better if you ask me.
